I was looking forward to enjoy fresh seafood at this ryokan on the Boso Peninsular seaside. I was not let down.

Reviewed By tomizuta1953

In February 2022, the sixth wave of Covid-19 had started to ebb. I visited this ryokan in Amatsu-kominato on the southern seaside of the Boso Peninsular to enjoy a quiet stay and onsen bath. I had visited Amatsu-kominato before but it was the first time to stay at this ryokan. The ryokan was much larger than I had expected and was quite busy in spite of the pandemic. This was a surprise for me, as there were very few travelers at the sightseeing spots in the vicinity. It was a cold day and I enjoyed a quick bath in the rooftop public bath. I had ordered an early supper which was served in the guest tatami room I was staying. The southern seaside of the Boso Peninsular is a great place to enjoy fresh seafood and I was looking forward to the meal. I was not let down. Starting from a full set of appetizers using local seafood and including assorted fresh sashimi. the course also included a small grilled half lobster and a simmered red Kinme-dai (a local favorite). Although each dish was not that voluminous, I quickly became full leaving not much room for the red snapper rice and dessert at the end. I took an early bath (which opens from 5am) before breakfast served in one of their banquet rooms. They had quite a decent selection of western style dishes as well as local dishes to help yourself to. The staff were friendly and very efficient. Their room rate is higher than average, but well worth it to enjoy a relaxing break at a seaside onsen ryokan.

Great Choice in Kamogawa

Reviewed By SandBTokyo

This is a great choice if you are spending the night in Kamogawa. It is right on the beach front and also has a pool. You can walk from the hotel to Kamogawa Sea World in 5 to 10 minutes, it is just down the road. The hotel has recently had an upgrading and renovation. The hotel is spacious and clean, seems to be family oriented and very child-friendly. Our room was western style; clean, spacious and comfortable. Non-smoking with nice ocean view. We could hear the waves at night which was nice for sleeping. The dinner and breakfast are in a beautiful dining room, kind of a Bali atmosphere. Both dinner and breakfast were buffet style and were wonderful; great selection and quality. The public bath is fantastic. There is a lot of space and everything seems clean, both indoors and outdoors. The water quality was nice. The service at this hotel is super friendly. We had a great time and would be happy to come back.

Rokuza

A Gem of a Hotel in the Middle of Nowhere

Reviewed By Botayone

My family and I went on a weekday and stayed in a "Japanese room with a deck bed", which faced due west for great views of the ocean sunset and was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate us 4 adults and 1 toddler. The rate of 14,000 yen per adult included both dinner and breakfast, both of which were high quality, multi-course affairs (i.e. not buffets). The baths were separated into 4 rooms on the 3rd floor: 2 open-air private baths and 2 public baths (1 per gender). The public ones were quite forgettable, but the private baths (for two adults) were great. Reservations are first come first serve so the sunset hour probably always go to the first groups to check in. In the morning, the private baths open at 5am and do not require reservations. I went at 7am and found both private rooms unoccupied. The spacious lobby has a complimentary cappuccino machine and cookies. The room has complimentary bottled water in the fridge and complimentary pod coffee by illy. The complimentary assortment box of sweets (by solennel patisserie) was also by-far the best I've seen in a ryokan - easily besting the ubiquitous "welcome manju" found at most places. Lastly, during dinner Rokuza was offering one complimentary beverage per person who added Rozuka as a friend on the LINE app. At 10:30pm, one neighbor knocked on the shared wall, which I thought was ridiculous because our volume was well-within the etiquette norms. As such, I am dismissing it as a aberration due to abnormally sensitive neighbors rather than abnormally thin walls (i.e. no fault of Rokuza). The outstanding service, excellent food, ocean view, private open-air baths, and the litany of nice freebies slots Rokuza easily above the 14,000 yen per person level. It is as easy a recommendation as there is at this price point.

Great Oceanside Location but Disappointing Onsen

Reviewed By AndraYo

The rooms really offer a great 180-degree view of the ocean and the rocky seashore which was fun to explore. However, the ladies' onsen was very packed because the outside open-air bath was closed. (Wind? Construction?) Most disappointing was the windows were not sparkling clear like in the photo above, we couldn't see or enjoy the view from the bath. As other reviewers have said 'cigarette smell' is a problem throughout the older hotel, but our room was OK. The fish-ball soup made with local Chiba sanma was interesting.
