Top 10 Italian food in San Giovanni d'Asso, Montalcino, Province of Siena

October 26, 2020 Rebbecca Marino

Reviews on Italian food in San Giovanni d'Asso, Montalcino, Province of Siena. About a 25-mile drive southeast of Siena in the rolling hills of Tuscany’s Crete Senesi region, San Giovanni d'Asso is home to just a few hundred people. The highlight is the 12th-century castle, which now houses town offices. Directly opposite the castle is Villa San Giovanni, complete with a hanging garden, which is rentable by the week. The town is home to two lovely old churches, San Giovanni Battista and San Pietro in Villore. Every November, San Giovanni d'Asso holds a Truffle Festival.

We just returned from a trip to Tuscany and were fortunate enough to have dinner at Roberto's. He is a delightful man who has a passion for good, natural food. He served 12 of us in his home. The meal was remarkable with all ingredients being organic. Roberto knows food and wine and pairs the two remarkably well. If you can, be sure to make a reservation for lunch or dinner. You will not be disappointed.

Actually, for us, it wasn't a long drive. We were staying a few kilometers away at an agriturismo. But, if one was staying in the big city, this would be worth the drive.Creative dishes of local flavour at a reasonable price. Daily specials give an ever changing menu. Too bad we only had one night to eat here, I think I could have put on a few pounds trying everything. A really beautiful veranda for summer dining. Come hungry. Leave with a smile and a full stomach.http://www.piccolohotelsanvalentino.com

We toured the vineyard; visited the private chapel; learned how to make pinci pasta; and dined at the restaurant. With each course, we sampled another wine, and had the chance to purchase wines afterward. We started with Tuscan Bread Soup, Pinci pasta Bolognese, followed by a mixed grille of chicken, ribs, sliced beef, sliced pork, and sausages accompanied by Tuscan beans. Whipped ricotta for dessert. The lunch was very satisfying; atmosphere superb. I loved this little restaurant. Enjoy!Dear Redeco, thanks for your kind words. You visited our farm the right way. Historical visit, wine tastings, cooking lesson, a good lunch. Thank you for your visit and we look forward to seeing you next time.

La Torre di Monte Oliveto

Reviewed By Vicarmuddlebush

One doesn't ordinarily expect much from restaurants that are attached to relatively remote visitor destinations and, with the Monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore being the stupendous place it is, one might not be too disappointed if the food offerings at this place housed in the entry tower to the monastery complex were just average. That said, I wasn't expecting much when a group of us arrived for lunch on the restaurant's deserted terrace one day in October. But what a terrific surprise I had. Everything about the place--from its gracious and informal hospitality, the kindness and patience of the wait staff, the simple, authentic food (and some of the best "beans cooked like birds would be cooked" that I have ever had...truly sensational in their taste and melting in their texture), to the resident gigantic cat who, after greeting us warmly, settled down at the edge of a small turtle pond to take in an afternoon of "cat TV"--made for a perfect experience. It was the ideal venue to pause to reflect on the deeply gratifying experience that spending time with the Sodoma and Signorelli frescoes in that most spiritual of settings. Why? I think that, for us at least, being at La Torre felt less like a 'customer' experience and more like we were dining with a family that had extra portions available to share. Its simplicity was in itself "artistic" without pretense or prissiness. We were left alone. but we were not ignored. The food was more delicious than pretty. I had made many visits to the monastery without stopping in at La Torre. After the lovely experience we had this time, I expect that La Torre will become a part of my future visits to this most wonderful of places.

We had a multi-course lunlech and absolutely loved it. The antipasti with shaved tartufo on crostini, truffle cheese, salume, and squash blossom stuffed with truffle and cheese could have been a meal in itself. But I found room for every bite of the decadent lasagna with shaved white truffle, and for the lovely cream dessert. Truffle Amaro was the perfect after lunch digestive. You should absolutely dine here while in Tuscany. The restaurant also has a shop selling truffle products and Amaro.

Do not miss this restaurant! I know a lot of reviews say this, but it was genuinely the best meal we’ve had in Italy so far. After tons of pasta and pizza we wanted something flavorful but with less starch and gluten. I had the grilled veggie platter and it was fantastic! My partner tried a pasta (very thick and fought, yum) and my dad had the tuna with peaches, nice and light. The house wine was great, and the desserts divine. We had to restrain ourselves from licking our plates. I also loved the atmosphere (a sweet, well lit patio), and the waitress who described each dish in detail. Prices were affordable.

I promised to come again when in the region ... so we did . As it was a Friday evening we made a reservation for an early start . The chef is passionated by his profession and and passes this on to the customer . When it is a full house you need some patience but it is worth it . We had the first oil of the season yummy , could not be fresher and tastier . The chef explains in English or Italian what he proposes and it is goooood . We try to go for the plates that are from the region and unknown to us and never disappointed . C U next time Gianluca .

We had lunch here on a Tuesday. There is terrace seating (no smoking allowed) and inside seating as well. We sat outside with several other small groups of tourists. We ordered a bruschetta pomodoro and a ribollita for starters and pici pomodoro for our main course. The home made pici was excellent as was the pomodoro sauce. The bruschetta pomodoro was also good but seemed to lack garlic and no basil on top either. But the toasted bread, the fresh (not chilled) tomatoes and the olive oil (from the nearby Abbazia) were all very good. The ribollita, which is not cheap, was a little too salty for my taste. If I ate here again, I would not order it. The menu we were given had a good selection of antipasti as well as choose your own pasta and sauce. This was a great menu for vegetarians like us. We don’t need and never order a secondi. Service was friendly and efficient. The red house wine was very good too. We plan to eat lunch here again on another day and can recommend it to other travelers in the area. The small village is scenic and the restaurant is conveniently located only a couple of kilometers from the Abbazia.

Pleasant service, lovely atmosphere. Delicious cheese breadsticks. Unusual menu, loved the duck tagliatelle with orange. Anchovy’s were good for those who enjoy them, beautifully presented. Nice wines available by the class. Excellent Banfi white. Unfortunately the ribs while unusual with honey were devoid of hardly any meat. Very disappointing. The desserts were average.
