Elephantine Island

This island is the oldest inhabited part of Aswan and served as the cult center of the ram headed god Khnum in ancient times.

Most people visiting Aswân are looking for the real Nubian experience and you can’t get more real than on Elephant Island. A real Nubian village where many people have opened there homes to visitors and made some great value got money bed and breakfast guest houses. Dusty small streets and friendly faces are your first impression, then when you sit down you soon realise the noise and rush of the city is not on the island and you feel relaxed and at peace. If you are a sun worshipper it’s important to get a East bank facing (sun) hotel. If you are not bothered then the cheaper West Bank ones are quieter and great value. The young and hip people seem to all stay at the bob Marley hotel which has a lovely roof top terrace and the adorable Ali manager. Highly recommend a visit.

Fatnis Island (Fantasy Island)

Covered in lush palm trees with a secluded freshwater pool in its center, this island is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing.

It is a truly magical place to watch the sunset. Just some practical tips: 1. Cycling there is more fun, but if you opt for a tuk-tuk (which can be shares between 4-5 people), expect to pay LE50 for return. 2. Try the date milkshake (LE30), but remember to ask them not to put any sugar as the date is very sweet already! 3. Don't leave too soon after the sunset. Wait a little longer until you see the most amazing colours of the sky. (On the day we were there, sunset time was 5:37pm, but at around 5:50, you saw these!)

Agilkia Island

Reviewed By westy54 - Sydney, Australia

The Philae Temple complex on Philae Island was partially flooded by the construction of the old Aswan Dam in 1902 and was to be completely flooded by the construction of the new Aswan High Dam in the 1960's. Agilkia Island, which was nearby but approximately 20 metres higher above the waterline, was levelled and landscaped to resemble the original Philae Island and the Temples, as part of a UNESCO Project, were disassembled stone by stone, relocated, and rebuilt in the new location. We were told that the project took approximately 10 .years with the new Philae Temple Complex opening on Agilkia Island in 1980. The only access to the island is via motor boat and there are a significant number of them in the reservoir.
