I arrived from NZ around midnight. No one was there to pick me up, an important reason why I picked the hotel. After an hour I gave up. Terrified and alone in a foreign country after midnight, I paid a seemingly kind woman too much money to drive me to the hotel. When I arrived she asked me it was even a hotel since no one was there. The reception was empty. No staff anywhere and now it’s close to 2 am. the kind lady managed to find someone wandering around who let me into my room. I was the only guest and i barricaded the door. There was no staff anywhere the following day. I gave up and left, paid for 2 nights but only stayed one. I double paid for the second night because I had zero faith anyone would help me get to the airport for an early flight to V’avau. Booking the hotel was a huge mistake. I spent my one day in Nukukalofa just trying to figure out how to get help and get back to the airport. A total waste of time, energy, stress, and money. NB The capital is a ghost town on Sundays. It was hard to find even food.

Warmest welcome in Tonga

Stayed in Waterfront lodge for about a month during my deployment in Tonga after the vulcano eruption and tsunami and it turned out to be my home away from home. There is a few beautiful decorated rooms ,some with seaview, and we were living as a little family with Liz and her staf taking extremely good care of us. During and after lockdown we enjoyed the best hospitality, very clean rooms, laundry service, a hearty breakfast, and eating the best food in Tonga for dinner on the veranda. Liz always going the extra mile , making sure there was something organised for us to enjoy the beauty of Tonga next to work . Totally recommended !

This boutique hotel is centrally located with easy access to services and amenities. Across the road is Lord's Hire Car and nearby there are small supermarkets. There are many road-side fruit stalls close by. Rooms are spacious and kept cleaned to a very high standard with daily servicing. Beds are comfortable and the shower is refreshing. Staff are extremely polite, approachable and always ready to help. Free wifi and breakfast are a bonus and there is off-street parking. If you want to stay away from a large resort then this is the ideal place and we would recommend it.

There’s no beach

If you have images of a lovely sandy beach outside your bungalow then you will be in for a surprise.....there isn’t one. In fact you can’t even access the water due to a jagged coral wall, not that you’d want to. The sea swimming pool is very uninviting and it looked to be closed. But the bungalow we stayed in was comfortable though in a poor state of repair. The saving grace was that the staff were wonderful, friendly and very obliging....eager to please. The restaurant and bar provided good views. The menu was fine and the food acceptable

Quiet hotel right behind the palace

Reviewed By Greg B

I stayed here for a week (on business) but it was a good base, the room was large although I would have preferred to be upstairs because then I wouldn't have heard people walking above me. Wifi is excellent in and out of your room. This is a quaint little lodge with only a few guests at a time directly behind the Palace (I mean it is literally across the street) and in easy walking distance to the esplanade and markets or if you don't want to walk a taxi is only 2-4 dollars depending on how far you go into town. I suggest walking in and getting a taxi back if you buy a lot. A set breakfast is included: cereal, fruit tea/coffee, toast and they make pretty good scrambled eggs. I never got to eat here because I was functions during the day and night but they catered for that function and the food they put on was amazing. If the food in the restaurant is as good you're on a winner. I had a TV but never used it so can't comment on reception/quality. The A/C works well although you may not need it if you stay during May-August (winter). At night you know you are safe in your room as they shut the and lock the gates after dark and have a security guard on watch all night... but don't worry if you stay out late they let you in :) The staff are very friendly and super helpful, the manager saw me walking one day and pulled over to give me a lift. I only gave the place an average rating because I want other guests not to come here expecting a topend lodge, for the price you pay this place is pretty good. Honestly it is a bit well used and could do with some newer furniture/beds/furnishings, while not new you always get clean fresh sheets and towels. The pressure in the showers is good but it is a circus act to get the temperature right before the hot runs out. It was either skin blistering to cold, I usually opted for a cold shower and used the hot water for shaving. It is the tropics after all and who needs a hot shower, even "cold water" is around 20C. Which reminds me, Tonga does get cooler in the evenings in "winter" you might need a jacket, during the day shorts and t-shirts are fine as it is over 24C if your from less sun clims bring a hat/umbrella and sunsceen because fair skin will burn here but after dark it can drop into the mid teens.

Bring whatever you need

Reviewed By AshM1010

The location was beautiful, the vibe was relaxed (very much island time) and we had most of the beach to ourselves. We also enjoyed the outdoor huts. If this is what you are after in an accomodation, then come here. We were underwhelmed by the service and hospitality. The 'free' breakfast was minimal, the restaurant had a very simple menu and had to be ordered hours in advance and there is no way I would say that Heilala has a bar. The fale was simple and basic. The shower had to be running for around 10min before a small amount of hot water came through. What is indicated in the fale photos, is what you get. Remember that it is Tonga and resources are low. Also a heads up that the roosters will wake you up every morning. A key thing to note is that this accomodation is quite a long way from the town/city and airport. There are other 'resorts' around but there are times when their restaurants are closed too. We were worried at times around where we would get food from next. I would recommend renting one of Heilala's vehicles and going into town to stock up on food and water, then use Heilala's communal kitchen (adequate) to cook. Heilala advertises the use of their kayaks, snorkel gear and bikes (at the time, all free when I booked). We had to have a conversation with the manager to let us use the kayaks because initially he wanted to charge us. Additionally there was no snorkel gear and the bikes were broken. When swimming or kayaking on the beaches of Haʻatafu and Kanokupolu - BE CAREFUL. I suffered a reasonable cut due to a mixture of the coral reef, shallow water and waves. Make sure you pack your own first aid kit to treat these sort of wounds as Heilala had nothing to help me.

The hotel has a great location. Don't expect anything too luxurious, but it will serve your basic needs. You can walk on the street in front and can reach the small city just behind. It is a great place for relaxing and get ready for another round of city hustle.
