Nice Hotel Far from Tourist Crowds

Reviewed By Luv2Go2013

This is an excellent hotel for hikers and those that want a quiet vacation far from tourist crowds. The general impression is similar to an American hotel at a national or state park. I consider this a positive comparison, plus the Tannenhof has the bonus of better food and outdoor activities. You enter the hotel from the back, so the beautiful view seen on their webpage is not immediately visible. The halls and rooms are decorated in a simple fashion. The rooms are large but the bathrooms are small. There is plenty of closet space. The flat screen TV was very small. Our room had balcony with a view across a quiet field into the forest. A few rooms have a view down into the valley below the hotel. Though the weather was often very hot, our room on the lower level stayed at a tolerable temperature. The dining area is large with high ceilings and a terrace with a nice view. We booked half-board (there are not many restaurant options in the immediate area). The meals were very good with plentiful portions. Our package included a five-course “Surprise Dinner” which was indeed excellent. The breakfast was typical for Germany, in other words a large variety of rolls, cheeses, meats, etc. Eggs were likely to run out later in the morning, but the waitress quickly provided a custom made portion for us. Our package included a massage which was also excellent. We did not use the pool or sauna facilities but they looked OK. The three-star superior rating for the hotel seemed well justified. There are extensive, well-marked and well-maintained hiking trails that you can easily reach from the hotel. There are many Park & Ride centers with extensive and frequent bus and train connections, or you can park at the parking spots at the numerous trailheads. The trails are mostly level though there may be challenging climbs deeper inside the park. The hotel seems to be a favorite for German families and groups. In four days I heard only German at the hotel (or in fact in the region, except for some Czech), but communication in English is not a problem, at least at the front desk. Spiegelau is a small town with only a few stores, but there are interesting glass and ceramic outlets with good prices. In addition to hiking and biking, we spent pleasant days driving in the forest, riding on the free trains and buses, visiting the open-air and town museums, and attending the many local fairs and events.

The perfect apartment in the perfect place

Reviewed By Igal73

We ( family of 2 adults and 2 kids 10+5 y/o) rented the Lusen apartment for a week. The apartment is just perfect: tastefully designed, spacious ,spotlessly clean and equipped with everything that you may need. The beds are comfortable. The sauna is very nice and relaxing. The owner, Annette, is very friendly and she's always ready to help. Annette gave us a lot of useful advises about sightseeing in the area. The location is also perfect . A lot of attractions are in 30 minutes to one hour driving distance. In addition, there're numerous well signposted forest trails, some of them start just next to the house ( we recommend picturesque trail to Steinclamm). The big forest playground is located within 5 minute walking and it really was the paradise for our kids. Highly recommend!!

very good hotel with amazing food.

Reviewed By Walkerman100909

Booked via a well known website, this hotel was very good indeed. First thing of note though - the photos of the hotel show two separate buildings, which are separated by the fairly busy road through the village, not the flower-filled meadow it would appear. The hotel food is wonderful - an amazing buffet breakfast with most everything one could want. This is followed up with a free lunchtime buffet with several choices of main course/desserts and cake, with various and ice creams, all on a 'help yourself to whatever' basis. Evening meal is a choice of main courses, with set appetizer, then choice of soup or the starter, and a choice of desserts as well. Add in a salad buffet , and the huge cheese buffet and its a 6 course evening meal to your choice. just a note that there are only a couple of other cafe's/restaurants in the village, so evening meal choice would be very limited if staying bed and breakfast. To work off the calories, the hotel hires out both mountain bikes and E-Mountain Bikes which allow use of the extensive biking trails nearby. Walkers are well catered for with many different planned routes- many starting from the village. The hotel also has its own tennis court, with rackets available from reception, and a small gym (cross trainer and static bikes, but no treadmill). The hotel was VERY Covid aware, with nitrile gloves needing to be worn when getting anything from the buffet/pouring coffees and teas etc. A fantastic stay in this very good standard hotel.

Ausgezeichnetes Hotel mit familiärer Atmosphäre

Reviewed By wopei

Hotel-Pension Salzsaumerhof

Relaxed, Serviceable

Reviewed By bash4ever

Spiegelau (population 4,000) seems to be less on the radar of places to stay near the Bavarian Forest that the larger nearby towns of Zweisel or Grafenau. We quite honestly think we were the only non-German (perhaps even non-Bavarian) tourists in town, and certainly at Pension Salzsaumerhof. We considered this a plus which allowed us to have a truly relaxing 3.5 day get-away. A few things to know up front: *German is the only language spoken here, so you will need some passable German to communicate for check-in/out, questions, etc. *Cash is the only form of payment accepted, so be prepared with a stack of euros at check out. No credit cards. *We loved the atmosphere and would stay here again, but bear in mind this is a small town pension near the forest, not the Ritz. For instance, towels are changed out once a week, so plan to reuse. Our room had a very small bathroom with stand-up shower only. Decor throughout is dated--there is paneling in places and a copious number knick-knacks throughout. Overall there is a well-worn feel, which at first gave me slight pause, but less than 24 hours in it felt exceedingly homey :). Breakfast is included in the room rate. Each day orange juice, milk, coffee and tea were available. Hot items were hard boiled eggs and weisswurst. Cold items were a modest tray of cheeses and meats, quark, and cereal/muesli. There was a fine variety of bread and rolls. Noteworthy were the multiple (like 9 or 10) different kinds of jellies and jams, all delicious. We only had the included breakfast, but having your evening meals here is an option for an additional charge. Our room, and I think all the rooms, have a balcony. It's nice to look out and see the forest surrounding the town. The location is good: easy walking distance from the train station, the tourism office, grocery stores, the downtown area, bus stop for transportation to the forest, etc. It is on a hill right across from an apoteke and a lovely church. The proprietor will get all your information for the GUTi cards. I saw when I booked that there was some kind of tourism tax included in the price for most rooms booked in the Bavarian Forest region. Rather than just being a revenue stream to support regional tourism, however, this card actually has some great benefits for guests. We were able to ride the bus into the forest and back for free, and got a great discount at a local swimming pool. If you want to keep to yourself and just relax you can do that at this pension. However, if you want to strike up friendly conversation this seems to be a great place for that too. Each night when our family came back from our excursions most of the other guests were congregated on the porch, along with the proprietor, enjoying each other's company. (We speculated that some of the older couples return here yearly). If we lived in Germany we would too!

Schöner Kurzurlaub

Reviewed By Thomas N
