Wonderful stay with my family and our Japanese friends

Reviewed By djmontano

A great way to experience genuine Japanese hospitality in a Ryokan hotel. We came here with my folks' dear Japanese friends who booked this hotel. A Ryokan hotel is a traditional Japanese accommodation where you sleep on tatamis (mattresses) that are laid out for you on the floor. This particular Ryokan was classy. The staff were extremely courteous and well-mannered. Though they hardly spoke English, they knew what we needed. We came in late in the afternoon after touring Kanazawa and it was perfect to go into the therapeutic Hot Springs. There's one for the ladies and one for the gentlemen. You go down from your rooms in your robes and disrobe in the lockers. Bathing in the hot springs is very relaxing and you can immediately feel its medicinal benefits. Since we were a group of 15 pax, we had our own room where we dined so well. The second night was particularly memorable when we had our Kaiseki dinner. The fish was very fresh and the meat, tender. Everything was prepared and presented beautifully. The children had their own platters that were more kid-friendly. Whenever we would go off on a tour, the whole lobby staff would escort us out and wave us pleasantries as we went on our trip. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience genuine Japanese hospitality.

One of Ishikawa-ken’s Best Ryokans

Reviewed By John A

My wife and I enjoy visiting Ishikawa-ken because it is away from the typical tourist crush...it is quiet, refined, clean, and unhurried. We keep searching for those ryokans which cater to couples rather than to large tour groups, and to couples rather than families with loud and unruly children. Also, we look to find ryokans which offer private, in-room rotemburos. Kuriya Yasohachi seems to have it all — an air of quiet elegance, a nice modern room with a private rotemburo, excellent food in measured quantities, and top notch service. We stayed three nights and did not feel like we were getting repeats from the kitchen — each dinner and each breakfast was different, delicious, and satisfying, without being overwhelming. The service was excellent and management went out of its way to cater to all of our needs, even those which were not a ryokan issue (a dysfunctional GPS navigator on our rental car, for instance). Cleanliness was top notch, and we never felt like tings could be a little cleaner or a little more tidy: a perfectionist would be in heaven. We were sad to leave as we felt so welcomed in the inn. We never saw the public baths because our own private rotemburo was wonderful to bathe in. We had views of the ravine, the river below, and bamboo trees — complete privacy, and the sound of the river lulled one to sleep. What is not to like? 1. The exterior of the building could stand a good cleaning and painting. While the interior has been impeccably maintained, the exterior gives the impression of age and decay — don’t worry, the inside is wonderful. 2. The ryokan charges for coffee. Many of the luxury ryokans in which we have stayed offer coffee, usually self-service, but complementary. Yasohachi charges JPY500 per cup, which to be fair, is freshly brewed for each client. 3. Yasohachi provides a beautiful selection of yukatas for the ladies. We wish there had been a greater selection for small ladies — there was much greater variety for taller and larger women than for the petite ladies. We’ll be back!

Great attention to detail

Reviewed By canontnia

This is a large ryokan, although the lay out makes it seem and feel more intimate. Check in was professional and friendly as was our orientation with a cup of green tea made by staff in our room. We had the Japanese style room. The room was beautifully traditional and minimalist with a beautiful tokonoma, but also included a TV, fridge and excellent amenities. Of course yukatas and "happi coats" (a short coat over the yukata) in different sizes and sandals were also provided. The room even included a couple of beautiful origami birds. During our dinner our beds of comfortable futons were laid on the tatami mat floors. All in all very comfortable. The onsen was wonderfully relaxing after a day of touring with three different temperatures available; equally great was going into the onsen bath as a way of energizing oneself early in the morning. This ryokan had extended hours. As novices we were thankful that it wasn't busy. But you soon get the hang of the various steps in an onsen bath - especially making sure your tenugui or small towel never touches the water. All in all this ryokan was an excellent and enjoyable introduction to another aspect of Japanese life.

Stayed only one night. Peaceful surroundings, comfortable rooms. We were there on a Sunday night hence it was less crowded. Had good teppanyaki dinner with wine at the basement restaurant. Breakfast was a good selection of western and Japanese. It's located near the airport, only a short 10 to 15mins bus ride away.

Decent enough for 1 night stay

Reviewed By Jill_Chong

We were warmly welcomed to the hotel and received good service throughout. The room had a lovely view of the river and was very quiet and peaceful. Hot spring was average, but they have an outdoor hot spring which was small but a nice experience. Dinner and breakfast was good, we were very stuffed. Our biggest issue was that the room stunk of cigarette smoke (even though we asked for a non-smoking room) and no air purifier to be seen. It was so bad that the next day after we had checked out and left, our clothes and hair still smelled of smoke. That truly spoiled our stay and we were glad to be out of there after only one night.

Highlight of our Japan trip

Reviewed By Koro

We had a wonderful stay here in August. We were warmly greeted by an English-speaking staff member and shown to our traditional Japanese room, which was absolutely lovely with a river view and peaceful minimalist furniture. I was concerned when I booked because it was a smoking room but there was no smell at all. We reserved the private stone bath and it was an amazing experience. Food and snacks were good and abundant. Futons were made up for us while we were at dinner and we had a great sleep. We only spent one night and it would have been better to have had two to enjoy the room and all the hotel has to offer. The Western breakfast was especially fun with course after course cooked right in front of you with guests seated around a stovetop. The area is within easy reach of Kanazawa and I would highly recommend visiting the temple grounds of Natadera on your way from Kaga to the hotel. We ended up paying around 60 euros for a taxi to take us there and wait for us for an hour, but it was worth it for what was the highlight of a 2 week trip to Japan. There's a nice British guy at the tourist office at the Kaga station that can help you arrange this with a taxi driver. It's not cheap, but when you factor in the cost of a luxurious dinner, breakfast, and private bath (not to mention tea, snacks, yukata rental, all free), it was a good value stay and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Best Japanese hotel!

From the moment we arrived it was 100% service. The valet parked our car and took our bags to our room without us having to say or do anything. The front office team were very helpful and spoke english very well. We were given a convenient traditional japanese room. We booked the couples private onsen which we enjoyed immensely both were clean and luxurious overlooking the river and nature. Our bedroom was massive! and the tatami floor was so comfortable it was the best sleep we had in japan. We were given complimentary champagne for our honeymoon dinner. The food was all traditional Japanese there were over 8 courses and breakfast was just as interesting. I was very nervous that the hotel might smell of cigarette but it did not! This was the perfect Japanese experience thank you for such wonderful service I would recommend this to everyone.

Came here as a tour group. The room is large with a nice view to the lake. We had the Japanese style room and slept in the tatami. To our surprise, it was quite comfortable and warm. Agree with some comments that the rooms have seen their good days and in need for a refreshment. The doorlock to our room was broken and can only be locked by the deadlock. The public bath is big and not many people using it. The disappointment is that the outdoor bath is very small. On the other hand, the staffs are very welcoming and helpful.
