Top 10 Hostels hotel in Hamburg, Germany

April 25, 2023 Esmeralda Fenner

Second only to Berlin in size and population, the city of Hamburg is home to one of the biggest harbors in Europe. A stroll along its many waterways and canals illustrates why it has been called the "Venice of the North." Don't miss a trip to the local fish market (Fischmarkt), the Merchants District (marked by its imposing red-brick architecture), a fine dining experience along the river or a night out in the university quarter. And did we mention the Reeperbahn (red light district)? It's quite famous for its… red lights.

Great hotel and service

Reviewed By Poliorkitis96

As a hotel, it is VFM. I was there for 4 nights and my stay was nice. I liked the room decoration, as it was something out of the ordinary. The room was clean, and the breakfast, even though it didn't offer cooked food, it had a lot of variety and worth its money. In addition, it has a public kitchen, where you can cook your own food. The hotel staff was very kind and fun to hang out with. Also, very helpful regarding the places to visit and the the public transportation options. The hotel is located near the railway station of Altona, which is great as you have easy access to public transportation. All in all, I enjoyed my stay there and, if I visit Hamburg again, I would like to stay there again.

No lift, no WC in the room (Room 30), very far from the center, terrible place... For the same rate, you can find a real good hotel downtown, it's really incredible. Very bad experience. By chance, a friend advice me to move to the Vorbach Hôtel, 10 euros more than the Arcade a 100% better.

Great Hotel for Groups!

Reviewed By bigbruceee

We stayed as a group of 7 friends and had room 4 which is an 8 person room. Arrival was straight forward we found the reception without any issue. We were given as many keys as required and guided to our room. The rooms are on the 4th floor but there is a small lift to take you up. Don’t get confused going up to the room, the building must be used for other companies etc. You can get the U train here from the airport, we had a taxi on the way in. The room was excellent, the beds have a plug and a light and a curtain to draw over and the beds were comfy. There was a table in the middle and room 4 was opposite the communal bathrooms which were kept clean and well presented. The bathroom was well presented, clean and the shower was powerful. The toilets were split for male and female. Overall, we would all recommend the hotel we stayed in and would visit there again.

Jugendherberge Hamburg Horner Rennbahn

Typical German out-of-the-way youth hostel

Reviewed By Steven G

Hamburg only has two DJH-brand hostels, this one and a more city-centrally located one downtown. I chose the Horner Rennbahn one expecting it to be quiet, which it was. Location sandwiched between a busy, fast motorway-like road and a park. The "Horner Rennbahn" U-Bahn (underground) station is about 10-15 minutes walk away, so not exactly convenient, but it is an excellent idea to use it, because Hamburg is really big and all other U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations are far worse. If you have stayed at a German youth hostel before, you will now what this one is like -large, minimalistic and strikingly robust-looking, as if having been built to withstand a maximum intensity earthquake. Reception was very professional and speedy. I asked for, and got, a dorm to myself for no extra charge, which was very pleasing. Obviusly you might not be so lucky during a busy weekend in the high season, but just so you know it being a youth hostel does not necessarily mean you have to share a room with strangers. Of the various common rooms, the TV room had an interesting massive TV and the "fireplace" room (whose fireplace was not in use, sadly) good strong Wi-Fi signal. My dorm was on the ground floor, so the mammoth road right in front of the property might have made it noisy with traffic at night, but it wasn't -it was on the park side of things and surprisingly quiet. No en-suite bathroom, but there are shower-WC combos nearby; the one I used was very clean and the shower had remarkably powerful water pressure, almost at massage-level. Reasonably good German-style breakfast buffet. The only flaws I could find were the puzzling, hard-to-get location and the price of beer, which at €2 for a 0.3 liter bottle seems rather outrageous -perhaps it is a way to discourage young guests from getting intoxicated and becoming a nuisance. Otherwise, highly recommended.

You can choose between large (max. 6 persons) and small dorms (max. 4 persons). In addition to single beds you can book a whole dorm and use it as a private, single, double, family our group room. Three of our dorms are equipped with xxl bathrooms and reserved for women.

Excellent option if you have a really early flight out

Reviewed By Betty M

waking up in the middle of the night is something only the traveler need to do so Airport Hostel was a great option for me. My room was clean and gave me the rest I need. I reach the airport after a safe and well lighted 15 minutes walk. My only suggestion would be to increase the number of power outlets as the available ones were only near a specific bed that was not mine. .

MAC City Hostel

Not ideal!

Reviewed By AliFranchi

I chose to book one night at this hostel because of the cheap fees it offered...which kind of backfired. This hostel felt uncomfortable and badly arranged. The small common hall felt suffocating and narrow. The place had, I suspect, a problem with keeping the bed linens clean, which had never occurred to me in any of the hostels where I had been staying. Not only there is an unappealing cart loaded with dirty sheets in plain sight, but I'm pretty sure about the presence of bugs as of the time of my stay. Besides, at a point I had to use a pc to fix an urgent problem with my mobile phone. I was answered that the access to the pc was precluded to the customers and nothing could be done. I resolved my problem by walking to another hostel, which looked considerably better kept, did have an internet room, and the staff of which proved kind and helpful. The area is a ten-minute walk from the central station and looks quite seedy. You don't want to ruin your stay in beautiful Hamburg by staying at this place - good news is, it hardly gets worse than that.
