Top 10 Distilleries in Georgia, Georgia

December 19, 2021 Roger Rusk

While Atlanta is the anchor and capital of Georgia, you can aim in any direction to find distinctly different regions – from the tail of the Appalachians in the North to the rolling Piedmont hills and on down to the seaside marshes in the East. Atlanta lays claim to the state’s number one attraction – Stone Mountain State Park. They say it best - “Serious fun. Endless adventure.” Just 15 minutes from downtown, the world’s largest exposed granite dome is surrounded by 3,200 acres of natural beauty and stimulating activities for every member of the family – sky rides and hiking paths, laser shows and pedal boats along Stone Mountain Lake. Golfers tee it up, while red foxes dash across the fairways in a state where the Masters Golf Tournament creates revered green-jacket memories every year. It’s a long downhill ride down to historic Savannah, a ‘stone’s throw’ from the Atlantic and a virtual step back in time to Southern architecture and stately squares. St. Simon’s and Jekyll Islands offer barrier island beauty and a wonderful combination of outdoor activities, historic sites and artistic culture. Originally the private winter playground of wealthy northeasterners, Jekyll Island stretches along 10 miles of coastal beaches and inland marshes. Cycling and walking paths wind under moss-laden oaks, and a tour of Millionaire Village takes you back to those Cornelius Vanderbilt and J.P. Morgan days. The kid-friendly Summer Waves Water Park adds man-made fun to natural water sport activities. Coastal golf courses and sophisticated St. Simon’s Island appeal to moms, dads and vacationing couples.

While camping at White Oak Creek near Eufala, AL, we took a day trip to Plains, GA. Along the way we passed through Richland, noticed a sign for Richland Rum Distillery, and decided to stop in on our way back. We are so glad we did! TJ and Rick welcomed us into this spectacularly renovated complex of buildings. With light jazz playing softly in the background, we chatted with these 2 knowledgeable gentlemen about the distilling process. We toured the barrel room and distilling building which were quite impressive! The tasting room and gift shop are located in a beautiful vintage hotel which just added to the amazing atmosphere. The rums are world class and delicious! We bought a bottle as well as a bag of infused coffee and a bottle of the Almost Rum syrup. We like to patronize local businesses and we wish these gentlemen continued success!

Dalton Distillery

Our family has been making moonshine for over 80 years. To honor my Father after his retirement, I decided to open this distillery. We still use the same recipe used over 80 years ago. We are the only distillery in the state of Georgia that buys local, Georgia Grown products, and mills everything on site. We currently have 2 products in liquor stores, "Raymond's Reserve" Straight Corn Whiskey at 111 proof and "Raymond's Reserve" Cinnamon at 82 proof. Please ask for it at your local liquor store. Our products are able to be sold in Georgia, Texas, and New Jersey. Or, you can come to our location and try samples, purchase a tour and leave with a bottle of your choice as our gift to you. We are always experimenting with a variety of flavors. You never know what we will come up with next!

Moonrise Distillery

We’re doing things at Moonrise Distillery like they’ve been done since the early 1950s. While it seems like an old-fashioned, inefficient process, our use of tried and true methods and time consuming double-distillation removes impurities for a more refined sipping bourbon and rye whiskey. And unlike most distillers, we let our spirits tell us when they are ready - aging by taste and not by time. We also craft small batch vodka, artisan gin and brandy. Our mountain distillery setting is the perfect place to enjoy a souvenir tasting tour and then relax and enjoy our craft cocktails. Our venue features an 80 foot long covered front porch with view of Black Rock Mountain, an outdoor grotto and fire pit area. We also host live music at our music pavilion complete with turf lawn. We are open for tours Monday through Saturday except Wednesday from 11am to 5pm. We remain open for cocktails and relaxation until 8pm. Our Sunday hours are 12;30 to 8. We look forward to seeing you soon.

A distillery in Savannah? Who knew. Took the tour last year which was an education. Cocktail bar offered specials. I asked for a smoked manhattan, off the menu, but bartender created a taste treat for me! I purchased 3 bottles for shipment home (to California). Bottles arrived in perfect condition. Once shelter in place is over, a tour & tasting should be on your Savannah list.

Richland Rum

Georgia's only Rum Distillery. Handcrafting Single Estate Old Georgia Rum from estate grown unrefined sugar cane. Located in historic downtown Brunswick, GA, on the Atlantic Coast Open for Tours & Tastings. Retail store and Giftshop on site.

We had friends visiting from out of state and we were looking for something to do. I happened to see a flyer in a store on Newcastle and thought it would be fun to try. It was fascinating- they grow their own sugar cane and do everything in-house. With a distillery in Richland and one in Brunswick, the tour educates you about the process and provides a 5-rum tasting experience. Unfortunately for my wallet, I learned that I really don’t like cheap rum but the Georgia select was nice and buttery. Theo gave us a nice educational tour and was very knowledgeable. He clearly respects the process and showed us the science and the art of distillery. My only suggestion to them would be to have souvenir-sized samples for sale. I would have bought gifts if they would have had them. It was fun doing such a great tourist activity in my own backyard!

Stop by for some very tasty whiskeys! Quaint distillery in a scenic town. Informative tour with our guide Joel. He and the rest of the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. Fun afternoon in a beautiful old cotton storage building. We enjoyed the connection the company and its employees have with the military. Be sure to get the free tour and free tastings! The entire town was so cute! Much prettier than I expected. Lots of beautiful old southern homes. We had a really great pizza at the restaurant next door also.

What a phenomenal little place! The gentleman working in the Distillery that day was beyond knowledgeable about the distilling process, the alcohols they have, and made sure to have you taste the difference. I not only learned a lot, but tasted a lot as well. Personally, the Apple Pie Moonshine, and the White Lightning were my favorite, but the White Lightning feels like it lights a fire inside! This was easily one of the highlights of my family’s trip to Georgia, and I truly hope I get to visit again soon!
