Top 10 Beer Tastings & Tours in Western Cape, South Africa

December 2, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

South Africa’s most popular tourist destination offers the urban thrills of Cape Town, its adjacent wine country and an aura of the rich political history of South Africa. The Overberg's perfect whale-watching perches provide excitement of a different nature. The Garden Route's lakes and forests and the Klein Karoo's ostrich-farming towns and vineyards present another take on the Cape. For extra kicks, try bungee jumping or cage-diving among Great Whites.

We went on a full-day tour with Ian and it was fantastic! We went zip lining in the mountains east of Cape Town, where Ian took extra pictures and videos of us, stopped at the Elgin Railway Market for lunch, went to the Cheetah Outreach center to see big cats, and ended the day at Triggerfish Brewery for a well-deserved beer. Ian was knowledgeable, punctual, and shared many funny stories. His van was spotless and clean and his driving was outstanding. We would not hesitate to book him for any of his tours - he's truly one of the best! Thanks Ian!

I went on the two day trip, which included an overnight camping in the Cederberg Mountains. The rock art was extensive and beautiful, and the terrain, rock formations, caves and overhangs were equally stunning. Callan was great, and fun to travel with. He's an expert guide, generous in sharing his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge about the rock art, the geology, flora, and history of the area. Everything was provided, and Callan had thought of every detail, from providing walking sticks to bringing fruit for the drive, TP for the camp, and spices and napkins for our tasty roasted chicken and baked vegetables dinner (he was also a great cook), and flashlights for the tents which were equipped with very comfortable air mattresses. It was great having the two days. Highly recommend the whole experience.

The Fringe is Cape Town's best kept secret of the inner city. Away from the usual tourist spots, it is the center of a vibrant nightlife with an exciting mix of bars and clubs, old and new. We will meet at The Kimberley Hotel, one of South Africa's oldest bars, for a drink and a complimentary shot with the locals. Alcohol free options are also available. Next, we head to a steampunk themed restaurant/bar for something sweet and Irish. This venue has been voted best coffee shop in the world by several major publications including the New York Times. Afterwards for some live jazz* we sneak into a speakeasy cocktail bar with a hidden entrance - so secret you need a password to get in. Then we roll into a Western Saloon, hand-built by the Sheriff himself; followed by a laid-back ending at a surfer spot. For the encore, there’s an optional local late-night hangout. This package includes a gorgeous set of photos of what promises to be a memorable night. *Weekends.

Inclusions: One free shooter and a welcoming drink, You will receive a beautiful set of photos of the evening soon after the tour.

Exclusions: Food and drinks are for your own account, except for the specific items listed above.

The food was delicious and plentiful, everybody was stuffed by the end of the experience. The Kimberley Hotel is a hidden gem, the perfect place to have your sundowners. The others who joined in the experience, and the regulars at the Kimberley Hotel bar, were lovely and accommodating. Paul is a delightful man who loves to connect with people. I left there feeling like I had found my vibe and crowd. Would definitely go again if I'm back!

We didn’t actually do a tour so I ticked the. ‘Other’ button. We specifically wanted to go to lunch at the De Grendel Winery but although we are not big drinkers we both wanted a drink of wine so couldn’t use our hire car to drive there. We were staying in Stellenbosch and Jake was very punctual in picking us up. He took us there and left us for our lunch. He hung around the area and was there to pick us up when we needed him. On the way back he took a different, more scenic route and told us a lot about the area on the way. It was all very efficient and friendly. If I was to return and want to do a wine tour, I would choose this company.

I was put on a bus with teenagers aging 15-19. They were shouting and screaming the entire way n throwing water at each other. Me and my sister got soaked wet. And when I asked them to stop they called me “LOCA” and almost got physical with me with the bus driver watching. At the hostel, I couldn’t sleep for 3 consecutive nights because of how noisy they were. I spoke to the bus driver and he just dismissed me. His excuse was it’s communal living and I had to put up with the drunk screams till 3 am every night. The tour at the safari was meant to be one hour and ended as a 45 min tour of seeing nothing. The bus driver kept on pushing and embarrassing us to buy food and drinks that we didn’t need from the restaurants and cafes to get his commission which made us extremely uncomfortable. The hostel was dirty. The entire experience unpleasant if u r anything above 30, it’s not the right place for u. When we came back, we complained to the office on long street. Again, they were dismissive and didn’t even bother to apologize.

This may be a great tour except for the fact that we had payed 3 months in advance for it and because of covid we had to cancel the trip to South Africa. About 2 months before the trip we contacted them asking for a refund and it was agreed on a 90% refund since we were cancelling with over 72 hours of the tour, so we waited and nothing was done about it, we contacted them again and they said "they were sorry" but that was it. We are not asking for anything but our right based on their policy, but it seems like they are not too worried about keeping up with their side of the deal. In case they decide to do what is right we would update this post, but as of now nothing has been done.
