Amazing experience at this Ryokan in front of the beach. I stayed in room 211 with a private bath in the balcony. The view from the room was amazing and very beautiful. The shower was great also, located next to the balcony. The hotel has 2 different public baths. One of them is located in the terrace where you can observe the beautiful stars at night while relaxing in the bath. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. There is a ping pong table near the front office where you can play for free. The dinner and breakfast were very delicious and very abundant. I will definitely stay here again if I go to Shimoda.

Some very good, some decent aspects

Reviewed By Ted C

We recently stayed at the Shimoda Central Hotel, 1st it is NOT in the city of Shimoda per se, rather it is located about 20 miles to the west in a rural setting. We had a room booked through JTB. The room was quite large, the hotel itself is on the new side, the Grand Bath was quite nice, the view from our 2nd floor room was of a farmer's field and the mountain beyond. Dinner was part of the package and was quite good, some local fish and the usual assortment of Japanese foods. Dinner is served in 3 seatings in the hotel's mail restaurant. Not outstanding, but quite good. Breakfast was adequate but nothing of particular note. Good selection of Japanese breakfast staples and the standard western dishes served in a buffet. Shuttle service is available from the Shimoda Train Station. The day we were there a special bus went over to the Matsuzaki area so guests could see the cherry trees along the river and flowers planted in fallow rice fields. There was no charge for this side trip which took about 2 1/2 hours total it was a very nice "freebie". On the whole, not the best hotel I have ever stayed at but certainly well above average. More elaborate rooms than we were in are available with private outdoor baths and small gardens. The room maid told us that the water for the baths in the rooms was from the same hot spring that fed the Grand Bath. I can an recommend the hotel for a nice and relaxing day or two away from the clatter and clamor or Tokyo. But be aware it is well out into the country so plan on entertaining yourself if that is what you are looking for. The floor we were on is non-smoking with an enclosed smoking space out at the end of the hall for addicts to the evil weed. I noticed a sign for a laundromat in the hotel which is unusual in Japanese hotels, a nice convenience if you need to launder some clothes.

Amazing hot spring and dinner

Reviewed By riche12

That was great experience. We just stayed one night, but we had a great time. You could get a fee bus from the station. After checked in, you could go around outside and farms. The room that we stayed has private hot spring in the room. That was fantastic! We could use anytime and don’t have to care about others. Lobby and hall way are so nice as well. You can find traditional Japanese toys. And dinner was amazing. They are all tasty not salty it was perfect! Raw fish Sashimi and beef we could have great Japanese food. About hot spring, it is like a floating in the lotion. After bath you may not need to put lotion anymore. 念願の観音温泉でした!聞いていた通り、温泉は化粧水のようで、お食事も最高。味付けが優しくてどんどん食べられました! スタッフの方も優しく、また再訪いたします!

Kanayaryokan

Wonderful old-style ryokan with huge steamy wooden bath

Reviewed By JohnD209

Why come to the Kanaya Ryokan? For the bath. This is one of the largest wooden baths in Japan, perhaps second only to the Sukayu bath in Aomori prefecture. Although advertised as a senninburo (thousand person bath) it would probably be crowded with 400 to 500 people in it at once. It is an indoor wooden mixed bathing facility with a deep long wooden bath, a low ceiling (perhaps three meters above the water), and a steamy atmosphere. There is a separate women-only bath with a door to come into the large bath and there were several couples in the bath when I was there. There is no separate men-only bath. There is a small fenced-in stone outdoor bath, but it is unnoteworthy and appears of recent origin. The best time to bathe, in my opinion, is in the early morning when the sun is coming up and shining in the windows from just over the mountain. The sunshine illuminates the water vapour from the bath and gives an ethereal feeling to the bath. The vapours make it easy to hide in the tub as one can only see vague shapes of other people. The bath is perhaps 35 meters long. The inn has a beautiful garden and the main building is wooden. The inside is fun to explore as it is in the old traditionsl Japanese style and has several halls leading off to various parts of the inn. Next door is a cement building also part of the inn. The ground floor is a dance studio (ballet style) and the second floor has a few large western-style rooms with beds. I stayed in one of these and it was nice and clean. The nearest train station is Rendaiji, a ten-minute walk from the Kanaya. There is an infrequent bus that stops right by the Kanaya. Visited 16 November 2018.
