Things to do in Singapore, Singapore: The Best Nature & Parks

November 25, 2021 Ying Subia

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

Gardens by the Bay

An integral part of Singapore's "City in a Garden" vision, Gardens by the Bay spans a total of 101 hectares of prime land at the heart of Singapore's new downtown - Marina Bay. Comprising three waterfront gardens - Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central - Gardens by the Bay will be a showcase of horticulture and garden artistry that will bring the world of plants to Singapore and present Singapore to the World.

Reviewed By tregsact - Mollymook, Australia

We spent a fantastic day at the Gardens by the Bay. The gardens are amazing and offer so much variety. The highlights were definitely the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest Dome and they are definitely worth the entrance fees to see amazing diversity of plants, beautiful garden designs and creative sculptures and structures - especially the carved wood models of dragons, eagles, horses etc. The only slight disappointment for us was the additional charged display called Floral Fantasy. This was a timed entry display where you had to book for an hourly slot and was $20 per person. It literally took us less than 10 minutes to walk around the display - so it was poor value compared to the combined $28 for the much more impressive Flower Dome and Cloud Forest Domes.

Cloud Forest

It felt like being transported to a new world the moment we stepped into the entrance to Cloud Forest. We were greeted by a huge waterfall and imposing structure. Truly beautiful and breath-taking! Make sure you take your time to explore all levels of the cloud forest. Definitely worth it. It provides easily accessible pathways, and the walk can be at a moderate pace to enjoy the surroundings. One can see the flora and fauna of a forest without having to exert the physical exhaustion of climbing a mountain to see the different plants and foliage that exists at different levels of the forest, and the pleasant air-conditioning makes the visit very comfortable.

Flower Dome

Step into the Flower Dome and you'll be standing in awe of nature. Spectacular and innovative in design, it is one of the icons of Bay South Garden. The Flower Dome replicates the cool-dry climate of Mediterranean regions like South Africa, California and parts of Spain and Italy. Home to a collection of plants from deserts all over the world, it showcases the adaptations of plants to arid environments. Stop and smell the flowers in the colourful changing displays of the Flower Field, which reflects different seasons, festivals and themes.

In short words - "A visual and olfactory treat!" Stepping into the flower dome from a blazing sun, you are already treated with air conditioned environment that allows you to immediately relax and are greeted with various scents coming from different flowers. Although it does not look so big from outside, the flower dome is quite huge inside and contains flowers of all kinds. We were lucky to be visiting at the time when a Tulip festival was going on (Till May 20th 2019) and we had a sneak peak into the Kukenhoff festival from Netherlands with a mock Windmill in the flower dome! All kinds of flowers are on display and the flower dome is also a photographer's paradise. A Quick walk would need about 30 minutes (assuming you are here to see the flowers and not just walk), but plan to spend at least 1 hour and keep additional 30 minutes if you are a photo freak!

Be captivated by the bright lights of the Singapore Flyer and the Central Business District skyline against the sky at sunset, reflected in the still waters of the Marina Barrage. This Reservoir in the City was created with three key benefits, to provide water supply, flood control and a lifestyle attraction.

Nonetheless, it is still quite an enjoyable experience. On really sunny days, consider bringing an umbrella, lots of sunblock, or even a portable fan. My only qualm is that it is really difficult to get to by public transport. There is a shuttle bus from the MRT, but the frequency is pretty low, so you might have to take a car or drive.
