Old Town Elblag

Reviewed By Dutkowska - Gdansk, Poland

Elbląg's Old Town isn't such 'old' and unfortunately we see this during walking. There are only a few historic objects built before World War II, really destructive time for this city. What we have now, is an attempt to restore former beauty. In my opinion, done well. Of course, we can have a problem with deficiency of historic soul, but it is not such a big problem. Plenty of restaurants and pubs to visit.

Latarnia morska w Sopocie

Being in Sopot near the Pier is worth going to the Lighthouse. When in 1975 the hospital boiler room was modernized, the very onerous smoking chimney has become redundant. It was rebuilt and a light source was placed on it and it became a lighthouse. One of the tallest buildings in Sopot, blends in nicely with the panorama of the city. At the entrance we are greeted by a very nice man and then the stairs begin . The stairs are very cool and there are a lot of them, after which we get to the top of the tower from which you can enjoy beautiful views. A nice tourist attraction. The ticket is not expensive and it is really worth seeing the beautiful panorama of Sopot. After getting down, you get a certificate of getting the Lighthouse. I highly recommend.

Gizycko Water Tower

The Water Tower is closed until April. It was built in 1900 entirely of red unplastered bricks in the neo-gothic style with interesting external vaulting around its crown and two coats of arms over the entrance: one Mazurian and one municipal to emphasise its being part of the region. The water reservoir in the tower distributed water to all the dwellings for 97 years. Nowadays, following the great reconstruction of the interior and adding a dome and three additional floors and extending the viewing platform with telescopes, the tower has become Giżycko’s most unique tourist attraction. To reach the top, one has to climb 129 steps (or use the lift). The highest floor of the tower is 162 m above sea level and it houses a café. From this height, one can truly appreciate the panorama of the town and the surrounding areas with lakes and forests – a typical Mazurian landscape. The inside the tower houses the local museum with exhibits that illustrate the past life of the local people.

Orlowo Pier

Pier in Gdynia Orłowie is about 180 m long and now is a pier promenade. The first pier was established here in 1924 and was 115 m Five years later it was rebuilt and extended to 430 m so that it could also serve as a haven for coastal shipping vessels. The construction materials used in the exploded at that time a wooden pier in Gdynia. After World War II the pier was destroyed in a storm, and reduced it to its present length, ie 180 meters from the pier on the right we see the most advanced part of Holmes

I walked through Rwdlowo woods and along the beach to reach Orlowo pier. Although the paths through the woods require watching and the signage is minimal, the walk along the beach was very relaxing but slow going. Both the woods and the beach were among the highlights of my stay in Gdansk. Three odd feature of that walk were: firstly, seeing evidence of fires lit using forest wood on the beach and people scrambling through the fragile root systems of the cliff side trees; secondly, the woods are full of birds (woodpeckers... etc) and animals (I even saw a boar and her piglets feasting of windfall apples near where I was staying); thirdly, innumerable couples hold photo sessions after their wedding near the pier... which is either endearing or annoying depending on your point of view!

Elblag Canal (Kanal Elblaski)

Reviewed By daesquiv - Gdansk, Poland

There are a few ways to book this boat ride and there are different lengths of time in the boat. The most popular one is the 4.5 hour ride which to us seemed like really long time on the boat so instead of taking the boat in Elblag, we drove 30 minutes to Pochylnia Buczyniec from where you can take other shorter options AND also you can also simply see the hydraulic system working without having to ride the boat. If you go to Pochylnia Buczyniec as we did come prepared since there are no restaurants but only a couple of food trucks with ice cream and beers and snacks so come with a full belly. When making the research for this trip we tried booking though their website and the info was not really clear so we decided to drive and see for ourselves...for example on the web page there were no more spaces available for the ride from Elblag but when we walked into their office they simply offered tickets to the next boat ride...so it could be possible to come without booking. To be fair we came right before the start of the season so for sure there were fewer people than normal. In any case I fully recommend!
