Things to do in Kutaisi, Imereti Region: The Best Historical & Heritage Tours

October 12, 2021 Roseanne Arnett

Kutaisi (Georgian: ქუთაისი [kʰutʰɑisi]; ancient names: Aea/Aia, Kotais, Kutatisi, Kutaïsi) is the legislative capital of Georgia, and its 3rd most populous city. Situated 221 kilometres (137 miles) west of Tbilisi, on the Rioni River, it is the capital of the western region of Imereti. Historically one of the major cities of Georgia, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia in the Middle Ages, and later as the capital of the Kingdom of Imereti. The Parliament of Georgia moved to Kutaisi in 2012, in an effort to both acknowledge the status of the city, and to decentralise the Georgian government.

Our tour guide Irakli (sorry if I spelt it wrong) was extremely knowledgeable and we had such a fun time with him. Georgia is absolutely beautiful and this tour company contributed to us having one of the best holidays I've ever been on!

I recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend in Tbilisi with a colleague and was given Rati's name (Splendid Tours Georgia) as a guide. What an amazing experience from his pick-up at the airport, to his drop-off at the end. Friday we spent 11 hours with Rati and Saturday we spent the day until he dropped us off for our flight. Rati is beyond knowledgeable. If you ask: "what's that", you not only get the answer but the history as well. He listened to what we wanted to do, went above and beyond to show us around, and arranged the most fun-filled, historical, informational weekend adventure. Rati will customize the tour to your likes. There's so much to see in Georgia that it's definitely beneficial to have a knowledgeable guide to take you. Rati speaks amazing English and can also speak Georgian (of course) and Russian. You won't go wrong with Rati!

Ana was my guide throughout a nine-day custom country-wide tour of Georgia. She was very punctual and organised, which was quite important since the itinerary I had chosen was densely packed and required us to drive from place to place and site to site each day. The first leg of the tour covered Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Ananuri, Kazbegi, Gori, Uplistsikhe, Kutaisi, Borjomi, Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia. The second leg of the tour (after a day of rest in Tbilisi) comprised Telavi, Tsinandali, Alaverdi, Gremi, Kvareli, Bodbe, Sighnaghi and David Gareji. Each of those places represents an aspect of Georgia's varied and rich nature and culture, and Ana was extremely knowledgeable about all of them. She was also on top of all the practical details. Lastly, Ana was very pleasant company throughout the trip, and she taught me a lot about Georgia's culture (especially the music, which is quite something). I would recommend her tours without any hesitation.

Tour of Tbilisi was special to us personally. Thanks to George that he made the tour memorable for us. Adding to the beauty of Georgia, he took special attention that we along with kids enjoyed every moment of the tour and took extra care about our visit. The tour was well planned that we covered the best of 4 days visiting Tbilisi City, Jvari Monastery, Gudauri, Mtskheta, Gori, Uplistikhe. Every place we went by was filled with rich history and George ensured that we as toursist understand the significance of the city, people and culture. An evening well spent in Tbilisi with local cuisine, wine , music & dance is not to be missed and George knows the best. Many thanks again and hope we see again for another season :) Cheers!!!

From beginning to end, Exotour proved themselves to be a professional business. Mariam (and Nico) dealt with all my questions and the payment process in a very timely manner and with great courtesy and warmth. The trip was really well-organised and then guided by Paata, who was informative, warm and friendly and treated me more as a guest than a client. I felt like I was being shown Georgia by a good friend. He knew all the places to get the best versions of the local food, while on the road.
