Things to do in Kutaisi, Imereti Region: The Best City Tours

December 9, 2021 Cedrick Jardin

Kutaisi (Georgian: ქუთაისი [kʰutʰɑisi]; ancient names: Aea/Aia, Kotais, Kutatisi, Kutaïsi) is the legislative capital of Georgia, and its 3rd most populous city. Situated 221 kilometres (137 miles) west of Tbilisi, on the Rioni River, it is the capital of the western region of Imereti. Historically one of the major cities of Georgia, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia in the Middle Ages, and later as the capital of the Kingdom of Imereti. The Parliament of Georgia moved to Kutaisi in 2012, in an effort to both acknowledge the status of the city, and to decentralise the Georgian government.

TrekGeorgia customized three sightseeing days for our three generations of family (including a 4- and 6-year-old) built around a few days at two different resorts. Leaving from Tbilisi, we went into the wine region, framed by the beautiful Caucasus Mountains. It was a perfect combination of fun (winery, horseback riding, climbing towers, easy hikes), culture (monasteries, museum), and spectacular scenery – all this amid the pandemic. Dimitri, our guide and driver, couldn't have given us a better experience. He was knowledgeable, patient and solicitous with the kids, and super dependable. We really enjoyed his company! It was our second visit to Georgia and we feel very comfortable and safe there. The people we met were friendly and welcoming. We are sure to return and would definitely consider arranging other tours with TrekGeorgia. Thank you, Dimitri and Nutsa (our guide on the previous visit)!

We came to Georgia with only four days to spare and very little knowledge about this wonderful country. From the moment Omar met us at the airport until we farewelled him at the end of our visit we were looked after like royalty. We'd organised an Airbnb in the centre of old Tbilisi and Omar picked us up punctually each morning and took us to see lots of incredible places we'd been totally unaware of. Along with this he introduced us to the delicious Georgian cuisine which was a real highlight for all of us. Every day was a new, special adventure. We all agreed that it would be worth coming back to Georgia just for the amazing food and wine Omar introduced us to! I can't recommend Omar highly enough and would give him six stars if I could!

We took a tour with “Fab Georgia” travel from Tbilisi to Gudauri. We agreed with Fab Georgia that we would take the tour and be dropped at our hotel in Gudauri and we would not return with the trip to Tbilisi. We were told this would be no problem and we paid upfront. We also confirmed that we would be dropped at the hotel in Gudauri in writing by Whatsap. The tour was “ok”, we visited a small fort and tasted honey by the side of the road. However, when we arrived in Gudauri at the ski resort the driver refused to take us to the hotel making an excuse that it was not possible to take the mini van to the hotel. We knew this was ridiculous as we had already passed the hotel with the same mini van on the way to the mountain. Our hotel was only a 5 minute drive away. We called our hotel and they also confirmed to the driver that the road was clear and this was communicated to the driver. We called Mari, a manger at Fab Georgia, we explained the situation and she refused to help us and laughed at us that we would have to find our own transport from the mountain with our luggage. We managed to find the guide (who was with other guests skiing at this point). He was very helpful, completely understood the situation and after a few calls he said that in the circumstances Fab Georgia should pay for a taxi to take us to our hotel if the driver is refusing. The tour guide managed to find a taxi for us and he paid for it. We thought this was the end of the matter. However, after arriving at our hotel my partner began to receive a torrent of abuse from Mari, a manager at Fab Georgia by Whatsap voice recording. She was saying that we must pay for our own taxi and said that she was calling the police. We responded and explained the situation and reminded her of the agreement we had made and forwarded her the earlier messages where the agreement is clear. She responded 10 minutes later to set out our hotel name and that the police would now be coming to arrest us. This was very threatening. I am an English lawyer by profession however, I do not speak a word of Georgian or Russian and my partner was terrified. We waited but the police did not come to our hotel to our knowledge. The failure to drop us at our hotel appears to have been initially caused by the driver, however, the extreme escalation and threats of arrest by the police by Mari was unbelievable. I hope no other tourists are threatened like this in the future and I would recommend that people avoid Mari and Fab Georgia at all costs.
