Loved Kofukan!

As I sat in the Onsen looking at the full moon come up through the branches and snow in the trees and over the mountains I thought about why I love this hotel so much. Certainly the Onsen is great. Outside is comfortably warm and inside is hotter. Locals pay to come to use it. The staff is courteous and attentive to the many details that go into a great stay. The warmth from them was genuine and made us feel at home. We stayed in 3 rooms of Japanese style. In the traditional manner they are cold when you come into them, but the heater quickly does its job. Remember to turn the heater on under the low table if you are sitting at it. Bathroom was down the hall and this worked fine. We took our breakfasts at Kokufan and enjoyed both the Japanese style with multiple dishes and the Western with a hot pot to cook eggs, toaster at the table with home made jam and fruit/yogurt. The 2 suppers we had were great with multiple courses all beautifully prepared. We walked 2 blocks to an absolutely fabulous sushi restaurant on a couple of occasions. They had convenient ski storage and a drying room available (we didn't like the kerosene odor from the heaters though) Stay here if … You want a traditional style off accommodation that you can feel at home in. Excellent value for money. Stay elsewhere if … You want to be in walking distance to the ski hills. The owner is kind about driving you 15 minutes to the nearby spots and we rented a guide service to take us further afield.

Reviewed By gensenn

Reviewed By Sightseer811339

Traditional Japanese Accomodation - Friendly & Welcoming

Reviewed By 573kelsiev

Just recently checked out of Hotel Taizan after spending 9 nights in an inter connecting room. 1 room with 2 western beds, adjoining traditional japanese tatami room and private bathroom with shower. Ample space and storage for our group of 4 with a communal lounge area to socialise. Yes....its dated...but it simply has character, is very comfortable and clean, and is centrally located in the main street. Our hosts, Angel, Katsu and Justine, could not have been more accomodating. From providing very personalised breakfasts, to picking us up from the station after missing the last bus, to providing discounted lift tickets. If you are coming to Myoko Kogen, stay at Hotel Kogen Taizan! A lovely family run hotel, who go out of their way to add those special touches you rarely get at Western style accomodation. Thanks guys for a memorable holiday.

The BEST place to stay in Myoko

Reviewed By zededog

We have stayed at Resort Project 3 times. Most recently in December 2019/January 2020, we stayed again with our teenage boys, 18 and 16. As always, everything about our stay here was more than perfect. Hiroe and Yoichiro are the penultimate hosts. From the moment you walk in the door to the day you depart, they treat you as family. With our boys they went out of their way to make sure they were satisfied, at breakfast (note, peanut butter and nuttela with lots of bread options!), to special treats during lunch when we were not skiing, to amazing dinners at their place. Other restaurants are in walking distance and they will shuttle you to places in the main village. But really, all you need is the area around Resort Project. Ahhhhhhh . . .

Amazing!

Reviewed By evitaveda

Where do I start? This must be one of the loveliest guest house experiences I’ve ever had. In the aftermath of the Typhoon Hagibis the local train line from Nagano to Myokokogen was down so I was worried I would not be able to go. Called the owners in advance to ask for advice on how to get there and they very kindly drove about 40 mins to pick me up from Nagano station. Whilst in Nagano I was asked if I wanted to see the Zenko-ji temple, so we stopped by there to have a look around. Then we drove to the guest house (with a stop for groceries on the way). The guest house itself is quite small, but the hosts are so welcoming and sweet. Although they don’t speak a lot of english they try their best and have a translation device which they use when needed. When I needed help with anything they were right on it. Since there’s no communal kitchen (which I thought there were), they were very helpful with boiling the eggs I’d bought for lunch. They do both european and japanese style breakfasts and I got to try both (they ask which you prefer). Although breakfast is the only meal provided, they very kindly kept slipping me food whenever I was at the table. Rice and miso soup one day and mochi the next. As I think I’ve made clear, the hosts are just the loveliest people! The room was clean and the shower room is relatively big. Toothbrush is provided along with shampoo and soap. The area is great for hiking or just relaxing for a few days. Would definitely come here again and wish I could have stayed longer!
