The best available Resorts to stay near Negombo

May 8, 2023 Ying Subia

With a wide sandy beach, big hotels, and handy proximity to Colombo, Negombo is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular resorts. Beyond its sands lies an interesting mix: a colonial-built canal and crumbled fort; a lively fish market, traditional fishing communities, and a wildlife-rich lagoon.

More Than Just A Hotel Near the Airport

Reviewed By KnightsDiscovery

We chose this hotel after civil unrest centred in Columbo forced us to move from the hotel we had booked and this hotel was a Lagoon front location which looked ideal in the online details. First impressions were not so positive when you turn off a busy street down a long single lane back-street in between a tyre garage and a small diner, then greeted with a huge ‘Park at own risk’ sign in the car park! But don’t let this put you off, it is a very nice hotel in a good central location with some fantastic views across the lagoon. The fact that it is fifteen minutes from Negombo International Airport (which is actually Columbo international, the same airport!) is a bonus, and for most people that are on organised tours, this hotel is usually a one night stop either at the beginning or end of their trip. We prefer to stay for a week and venture out on day trips and again this location worked well for us. Day trips to the Pinawawe elephant safari or Millennium Elephant Foundation (domesticated elephant rides), Lagoon tours to see the wild monkeys and an easy TukTuk ride to the beach (all can be arranged by the front desk) as well as a good pool, lawn deck overlooking the Lagoon and a fantastic rooftop restaurant with great panoramic views (unfortunately closed for refurb while we were there, but ask for a tour, well worth it for the photos). The buffet restaurant service is fantastic, I enjoyed every meal. Full of authentic Sri Lankan spices and flavours which made the A La Carte menu (when the buffet is not open due to the number of guests) look a little uninspiring, but if you ask for the Chef I’m sure he will cook you something else (he will even offer a personal ingredients shopping expedition and cooking lesson). There were quite a few minor issues we had during our stay, mostly down to a lack of attention to detail: housekeeping missed our room three times, shaving mirror fell off the wall and broke on day 1 and despite being asked what happened it stayed in our room, pool bar service was sketchy at best, room key stopped working 3 times and the decking uplights make it hard to see where you are walking at night, as well as table lights that make it hard to see what you’re eating, then there’s the beautiful waterway entrance to the downstairs restaurant with water so dirty you would never know it’s full of Japanese Koi and Fancy Catfish. Luckily they had just been joined by Carlton Fonseca, a hotel industry Guru and things could already be seen to be improving within a few days and I’m sure these things will be resolved. All the staff here are great, very friendly and you can get one of the best Mojitos I’ve ever tasted from the bar too. To summarise, a great hotel in a good location, near the airport with potential for great extended stays. I was also told that they have a second hotel on the beach so that you could easily move between the two.

We had a great family time here for 2 nights in this family friendly 5 star hotel. Food was delicious and staff was friendly and helpful. I got a rare opportunity to meet the Sous chef Prasanna Perera who is a well reputed and skilled professional. He made a delicious dinner buffet for our family. I'd recommend this hotel for families who look for a reunion.

We decided to pick this hotel for our wedding anniversary weekend. The first impression was great as you pass the open veranda (reception) area. Our check-in was very smooth and it did not take much of our time. Staff were very friendly and always greet their guest with a warm smile. We picked the Bawa room which was spacious, private and very homely. We loved the concept of the partially-opened bathroom. The hotel gives you the feeling of being blended with the nature. Lagoon view was great as the restaurant was located facing the lagoon. Meals were excellent; had more varieties and taste was absolutely commendable. They do have another pool facing the ocean which was a great option too. I love my blissful morning walk around the hotel with the birds chirping & breeze wind. The hotel offered us an anniversary cake upon our request. Overall, it was a lovely memorable stay and we hope to visit this place very soon to enjoy the luxury of nature.

I stayed 21 days at the lovely Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions. It was AMAZING. My first but certainly not my last stay here. ALL the staff was really friendly. Always smiling, welcoming and helpful. Mr. Nimanka in the booking/reception was always full of good humor and incredibly helpful. Both of my Ayurvedic doctors (Dr. Dinesh and Dr. Anuradha) were professionally competent, skilled, loving, caring and smiling. I felt seen and understood. My health, my mood and my spiritual balance are significantly improved after 21 days in their knowledgeable hands. The taught me a lot of things that I still use at home. My therapist (Anitha) was very skilled, professional and such a sweetheart. I loved all my treatments and could have stayed in her magical hands forever.  The food was amazing. So delicious, color- and tasteful. I stayed in a very clean and spacious King Pavilion with a lovely private garden and a private pavilion where most of my treatments took place. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom nice and spacious too. Always a lot of water bottles in the room and nice with the electric kettle and tea in the room. Overall I had a great time there! Felt so amazing for both mind, body and soul. Never felt this clean and relaxed in my body and mind ever before. Thank you Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions staff for an amazing service and I look forward coming back again next year. I highly recommend this place to everybody who wishes to become more healthy. Really life changing.

Bad service.

Reviewed By ek2456

Although this hotel looked lovely and had great reviews we had an extremely bad experience. We had chosen to stay here for our last night, to have somewhere nice and close to the airport. The reviews sounded promising. Anyhow at our arrival, they said that the family room we had booked through booking.com had been double booked. So instead of them giving us two rooms, they wanted us to pay extra for another room. We totally understand that the mistake could have been made by booking.com and not by the hotel but I think a hotel needs to take responsibility for this kind of thing (especially when they are not busy and have the space). For 1,5h my husband was trying to sort the issue but the staff would not budge. We wouldn't have been there to have breakfast due to early flight and we would have spent a generous amount on dinner (2 adults and 3 kids). So after 3h drive to the hotel, nearly 2h of arguing at the reception and waiting, we had to in the end CHANGE HOTEL with our 3 tired small children for a mistake that had nothing to do with us. Totally unacceptable in my opinion!! I hope the hotel learns from this experience and will in the future take responsibility for this kind of issues. I am sure they can get compensation from booking.com for a double booking and would find value of treating customers well.
