Abisko Mountain Lodge

One of a kind – a must stay!

Reviewed By Joakim L

After four nights at this wonderful lodge, I am in awe. The hotel is absolutely stunning with spectacular surroundings! I’ve seen the famous Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) several evenings in a row, both down by the lake and just outside the hotel a short walk up the mountain. So amazing! My dinners at Abisko Mountain Lodge were all beautifully presented and tasted great. I’m not a foodie, but I eat out a lot, so my taste buds are pretty honed. The chefs here are nothing short of world-class. And all the staff in the restaurant and at the reception were super-friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. My room was big yet cozy with plenty of storage, a comfy bed, a nice bathroom and large windows with a nice view. I brought my own slippers but noticed when I arrived that the room already had two pairs and bathrobes. During the stay, I went on a few solo day hikes with snowshoes strapped onto my boots (free to borrow) and a dog sledding ride and a snowmobile trip. Both were well-organized and really, really fun! I think a visit to Swedish Lapland to see the magical Northern Lights and take in the remarkable scenery there should be on everyone’s bucket list. On par with the amazing nature experience was my great stay at Abisko Mountain Lodge. Highly recommendable!

Wonderful stay

Due to the Covid-19, the lodge was completely empty: we were the only guests in. However the staff was really professional and hospitable, giving it all to make us feel at home. And they really did! We enjoyed all the activities, and decided to join also some opcional one: we really reccommend the husky sled, the visit to the reindeer corral and the snowshoeing looking for northern lights! The place is lovely, with fireplace in living room and in the dining-room always on. Rooms are warm, wide and clean. Sauna is free and wide. Last but not least, the kitchen! The chef is really a master! Every day he proposed different menus with special dishes, combining local food and european products. Each dinner was like a culinary trip! Great experience! Thanks to all the guys that made these four days so relaxing and exciting! We will miss Arctic River Lodge!!!

Absolutely magical!

What a fantastic place! First thing to say is that when it’s -12 degrees outside, you welcome the cosy warmth of the rooms and the lodge where you eat and relax. The fire was always lit and gave it a magical feel to the place. The food was gorgeous - buffet breakfast, a hearty soup for lunch and 3 courses at dinner. All homemade and top quality. The staff were so lovely! Everybody was only too happy to answer questions and chat. The nighttime snow shoeing tour was spectacular and yes, we did see the Aurora which made it even more special. The husky sledding was one of the best experiences ever - the dogs are so well looked after and absolutely love their jobs! Their excitement was infectious! We finished our 4 days with a tour of the Ice Hotel on our way back from the airport - we’ll worth it. It was spectacular. Thanks Franziska for making our stay an amazing bucket-list ticking adventure!

Been so looking forward to this trip - and it delivered. Very comfortable lodge to stay in, warm, cosy, lovely breakfasts and very smiley, easy going staff. All our activities were so enjoyable and no messing around. Everything prompt and organised with us having nothing to worry about. Mikka on the snowmobiles was superb and the husky dog sled my favourite. I love snow and quiet places so perfect location and exactly what I wanted it to be. So glad I stayed here and not in a 'fancy' hotel

Great accommodation in a beautiful place

We stayed at this small cottage/camping site for one night. The cottage we got was very clean and spacious, the bathroom facilities, which are shared, were also clean and comfortable to use. The camp site itself looks lovely, and there are no noise problems even though the camp site is right next to a busy road. Suitable for couples and families.

Husky Lodge

Sleeping with Huskies Beautifully located in a serene and tranquil area, our kennel lies only 5 min. from Kiruna city centre. In the cold arctic winter busy with dogsled and snowmobile tours, and in summer a quiet, peaceful place to rest. The Husky Lodge is situated a stone’s throw away from the dogyard. From the kitchen window you can see the puppies play and learn from their mother. And maybe, if you’re lucky, you can hear the intriguingly calming sound of the whole pack howling at once. We offer comfortable rooms at affordable rates. In our lodge you will find everything you need for a relaxed and pleasant stay; good quality beds, fully equipped kitchen, big and clean bathroom with floor heating, dining room, and a cosy living room. You can combine your stay with the real husky experience: You’ll meet our enthusiastic Alaskans, always happy and eager to run, help us to harness up a team and come along on a trip with the dogs. Back in the kennel we finish the tour with coffee/tea and homemade muffins in a rustic hut with open fire, and last but not least: puppy time! Playing with the puppies is the perfect way of socialising them and therefore very important for us and fun for you! Tours are weather depending in summer. If you don’t have your own transfer we can pick you up from town. From 16 april - 31 okt accommodation in Husky Lodge Sek 495 per person Inc. breakfast From 1 nov - 15 april accommodation only in combination with sleddog or snowmobile tour. Had a lovely time, but this place definitely has some faults

Reviewed By AlexSwallow

Good things first- there was a lot we enjoyed about our stay here. Staying in a place surrounded by huskies (more than 90!) was amazing and the dogs were so cute, even their howling was very cute- it even woke me up but they didn't do it for long. The room was decent, large and comfortable and the breakfast was hearty and tasty. The other guests were generally nice and friendly- we had some really good conversations. I've never stayed like a place quite like it and it felt magical in the snow. Less good things- my main assessment is that before we booked I thought this was a place to stay with a focus on the guests, which also did some doors. From early on in our stay and throughout, I realised that it is a place that does tours, with a focus on the tours and the guests staying there seem like an afterthought. Some examples: - We stayed for four nights. During that time I never once saw a member of staff behind the reception desk at the front of our building (we passed the desk frequently). I'm not expecting someone to be there all the time, but perhaps sometimes would be nice. At the very least it would be good if there was a simple way for guests to contact staff- perhaps staff could come by at a couple of regular times a day for example. The suggested way to contact staff was to phone- but neither we nor many of the guests stayed had Swedish mobiles, so it was prohibitively expensive. There was no one to check us in for example- we ended up randomly asking a guy who we thought might be staff- he told us it wasn't really his job but he'd do it. He didn't really have time to explain much to us. - It isn't easy even to work out which staff you can ask for help as they generally seem very busy, many of them busy with tours. For example there was one member of staff who was in the building we were staying for a bit as she was taking two guests on a trip. We asked her if she could light a fire as the main room was cold. She said she would and promptly forgot. - Some things aren't optimal from a privacy or security perspective. For example the toilet and kitchen in our building was also used by people not staying in our building, people on tours etc. There was no way of telling who was who. - With the toilet the additional problem was that there is one toilet between four rooms (so potentially 8 people I suppose). As the shower is also in the toilet, other guests use the toilet and the staff and guests use the room for laundry as well, there were times when this situation wasn't optimal! - Another slight issue is the distance of the place from town- it is about 20 minutes walk to the train station and a further 20 or so to the start of the centre. This wouldn't be a problem with a car and some guests had one. However, as the nearest supermarket is also about 40 minutes away and there is nowhere to buy food onsite, it is certainly something to consider. We just ended up walking into town a few times and it was a nice adventure- other people got a taxi/drove themselves etc- but again, without staff regularly around it wasn't the easiest to work out the best options. - The thing that annoyed me by far the most about our stay was that before we came we asked if we needed to book the tours before arrival or if we could book when we arrived. We were told we could book when we arrived. This seemed best as I had imagined that the staff would be on hand to take us through all the options. Trips include things like going out on a sled with dogs and trying to see the Northern Lights- things that for many people would be the whole point of their trip. Anyway when we arrived and had a brief chat with the person who 'checked us in' in a rush, he told us to book online. When we went to book online, the things we wanted to do were already booked up! We ended up doing activities with other companies instead, which was a bit weird as literally from our window we could regularly see the dogs being prepared for trips etc. If it hasn't been for the fact that we acted swiftly to secure other trips, this aspect could have been totally ruined for us. I think it bizarre that there are no reserved places for guests or suggestion to guests that they pre-book. - Finally, a good example of how the system doesn't work very well is this. Some guests we bumped into asked to see the puppies and got to see them. We had seen a sign by the front desk basically saying that if you want to see the puppies then ask the staff. We sent a message to the main guy to try to arrange it. He initially responded positivity, then we never heard from him again. We asked another staff member about it. She basically told us that everyone was busy and we shouldn't have been told that we could see them. When we explained that the owner (the main guy we had emailed) had said we could, she changed her tune and finally we managed to get it arranged. There are enough special things about this place that I don't think our mixed experience should put you off booking, but go with open eyes and make sure you book anything you want to do before you arrive!
