Christmas eve and day stay ruined by front desk manager

Reviewed By JeromeDZ

We booked an Ocean front suite (165) which came with a patio and was furnished with a hammock, patio sofa, and love seat. The setting and the view is fantastic, we were even visited by 2 of the island cats. Unfortunately this could be one of the probable cause of the problem. Both cats were sleeping on the patio furniture. We thought nothing of it as we’ve had stray cats on the island before. I decided to lay on the patio furniture to enjoy the view and sea breeze, after the cats had left. An hour after laying down, i started to itch on my side what was touching the cushion. I thought this was just because of the material and decided to take a bath to remove the irritant. The bath did help lessen the irritation and I decided to ignore it and just enjoy the rest of the evening. Sadly, I had a restless sleep as the itching returned.
The next morning as I was getting ready for my morning shower, I noticed tons of red spots on where I was itching. It looks like I was bitten all over by lots of insects. I informed the front desk, they apologized and stated they will address the problem. Back in the room, the maintenance staff came, we heard them arrive and go to the next suite. They then knocked on our door to switch out the cushions. We asked them where the cushions came from and they stated next door and they will just swap them out. We told them that won’t work since we are on the first floor and we have seen the cats wander between the balconies. They said this is what the manager had instructed them to do. I insisted that this was enough as the cats had also probably slept on them. They said they will contact the manager for what else they can do.A few minutes later one of the front desk managers came to our room to explain that there is nothing they can do and also that he had not heard of any cats on the property. I told him the property can simply spray the cushions with bug killers and wash the covers. He stated that they were not washable. I then proceeded to show him that the covers had zippers and could be removed to be washed. I also showed him the insect bites all over my side. But he still was adamant that there was nothing he can do. I informed him that we paid for the room and the room included the patio. This went of for a few more minutes then he eventually agreed to see what further he can do. 2 hours later the maintenance guys returned with what they stated were freshly washed cushions and some powder to sprinkle around the balcony to discourage the cats from returning. I would have given the place a 1 star but it is a nice property with generally helpful staff. It has lots of amenities and nooks and crannies to get lost in and relax. We normally stay at the resort next door but wanted to try a different one to have more options.

The Milky Way!

Reviewed By gcincinnati

Perfect getaway from Tokyo! Painumaya was an excellent choice as our introduction to Iriomote. The location was excellent: away from other spots on the island, we had an unobstructed view of the Milky Way at night. We could walk across the street to the beach to watch the sunrise. And the hotel is basically in the middle of the jungle so all we heard at night were various animal calls. This isn’t a place to go if you want a bustling nightlife. This is a place to go to get away from it all. We are two native English speakers who live in Tokyo, and we’re vegetarians. We chose this hotel because they were willing to remove meat from the dishes on their menu for us. Not everyone on the staff spoke English, but even those who didn’t did their best to communicate with us using a translation tool. The hotel offered excursions that were non-impact on the environment. We went on the 2 hour trek and canoe trip, and the 1 hour night walk. Both were exceptional, even when we didn’t understand everything being said by our Tourguides. It was all worth it. A few notes about the premises: - the pool is currently closed (Covid) - same for the public bath - the hotel is in the middle of the jungle - if you don’t want insects or lizards in your room you need to keep the balcony door closed. We enjoyed watching the one lizard that found its way in eat all of the flies that had been annoying us. - the hotel is trying to be low impact, and the island is working to eliminate plastic. For this reason there were no free small toiletries: bring your own. Also, they won’t come in and change the bedding and towels unless you ask - to save energy. As we are eco-conscious, we were fine with all of this. Some other guests complained, though. Also: you have to plan how to get there thoroughly: they offer a free shuttle to/from Ohara port but it’s not available all day. Same for the bus. Taxis are limited. Don’t get stranded at the port due to poor planning! We enjoyed every part of our stay with them and will definitely be back with our friends!

Hoshino Resorts Iriomote Hotel

With no airstrip and a lone coastal road, the island of Iriomote is as remote a place as one finds in Japan. Even so, its rivers, waterfalls, mangrove swamps, and long curving beaches can be explored in a host of outdoor programs here at the island's largest resort, promising fun and thrills for adventure-seekers of all ages.

What is Omotenashi?

Reviewed By 98emip

Hoshino Resorts bills itself as five-star ‘Omotenashi’ level of Japanese service. Far from it. From the start everything has been a hassle, with inflexible rules and inconveniences that ruin the experience. When I arrived at the ferry terminal I had missed the shuttle bus to the hotel. There are no taxis on the island and I was told to wait 90min for the next shuttle bus. The hotel is an 8min drive from the terminal but a 30min walk, which is impossible in the heat with luggage. I basically had to beg them to come and pick me up and it took two phone calls and lots of groveling. Why was something so simply solvable made so difficult? Upon arriving I was told I could not check in until 3pm. Again, the hotel was clearly not full, this was simply the check-in time and they were not going to budge it at all. Fine. I’ll have some lunch while I’m waiting. “Sorry the restaurant is closed” "We offer take-away of two lunchbox options, both meat. Nothing else. And there’s nowhere nearby to go. Instead, please have some pineapple juice in the lobby and wait for two hours. Seriously? You’re tired, hot and just want to change your clothes and relax, but can’t. Finally, there were at least 20 cheap, old bikes in front of the hotel. Can I use one? “No, you need a reservation and they’re all booked”. There was absolutely no one using these bikes and it was not up for discussion. Hoshino charge Four Season price for APA hotel level of service. Not worth it

Nice but sterile

Reviewed By netllama

I spent 1 night and it was fine, but not great. Staff spoke some english, but not what i'd consider fluent. My room was clean & quiet, but wasn't all that comfortable. The AC unit remote was only in japanese, and i never figured out how to get it cool the room. The wifi worked ok from the main building, but was nearly unusable in my room (slow and frequently stopped working for minutes at a time). The hot water in the bathroom required setting a cryptic thermostat in advance. Beds were asia hard, plus rice pillows which was not a great experience. The only great aspect was the food. Both breakfast & dinner were excellent, with a variety of traditional foods.

Quiet!

Reviewed By AJZ

We stayed for 3 nights in July. There is free pick up from the port. Journey takes 5 mins. Staff speak minimal English but enough to get by. The room itself was basic but spacious. Very little natural light, no WiFi in rooms, only at reception. Bed was comfortable, bathroom was small but functional. Breakfast is small and is generally catered toward the local market with soup, rice, savory dishes and pickles . There is bread, yoghurt and fruit. You can walk into town which takes about 20 mins but there is not much in town. The day we arrived on a Sunday, the hotel restaurant was closed so the hotel recommended a restaurant which was 5 mins away and was very good. We ended eating there twice. We did eat at the hotel restaurant which was a set Japanese menu. This was also very good and well presented but was at least twice the price of the restaurant the previous night. We hired the hotel bikes for a day (no gears) and cycled around and found some idyllic, most beautiful and deserted beaches that I have ever seen. Ohara, the port town is nothing special, we ate in the cafe in town at lunchtime but it is not open in the evenings. There is also a small supermarket and a nice local gift shop. The port has a shop and that was the only place that sold ice cream. The only ATM is at the post office. We used the public bus to get to the north of the island and you need the hotel to translate the times and stops for you. However, the buses only run 4 times a day. The only way to see the island is to rent a car but do this before you get onto the island. I would fully recommend to rent a car. The car rental place at Ohara spoke minimal English and when we asked if we could rent a car, they said it was full, but every day we went by, there was always loads of car at the back. There is loads of trips and info at the hotel, but it is all in a Japanese. We tried to visit the Iriomote wildlife center, but when we got there, it was shut on a Monday. Star sand beach in the North was nice and you can snorkel off the beach. We also went on a boat trip to the mangroves which was nice but the tour was in a Japanese. Some very kind people in front us translated the key/informative parts for us. The hotel itself looks like there was a pool but has now been filled/grassed up. There is an onsen which we used. It is new but not all the pools/areas were open. Overall, hotel was clean but to be honest overpriced for what it was. We then went onto to Ishigaki for 5 nights and looking back we should have spent all our time in Ishigaki as there was more to do and see.

Lovely stay

Lovely stay in the well know hotel in Taketomi island. Beautiful set up, walking around the resort and going to the beach is absolutely lovely! Breakfast was great, lounge is very relaxing and the staff very quite/friendly. Only bad part would be that there is quite a few insects in the house, which is completely normal for a country side place like that i would say. However still an absolute great experience.

Ilmare Unarizaki is a hotel with a diving resort (Diving Team Uorsezaki Iriomote). The room is Western style room with a bus-room, TV , cooler (not air conditioner) and small refrigerator. It is not a combined toilet. The room is a minimum size. Most of guests are divers. I could not see the ocean well from my ground floor room. Okinawa cuisine at the restaurant is delicious and reasonable. However, the last call time was 20:30, and I felt it was too early.
