A good choice

Reviewed By TWHK

I often choose Daiwa Roynet when I travel around Japan. Daiwa Roynet Morioka is not near the JR Station. It seems to be more than 10 min walk. However, it locates round the corner of the street with a lot of eateries. To walk to Iwate Bank and Morioka Castle Park takes about 8 minutes. It’s quite convenient. When I booked the room, I emailed the hotel to ask for a non-smoking room and they said no problem. When I arrived, they told me all the non-smoking rooms were occupied and they upgraded me to twin from deluxe double. It is nearly double the size of a standard double room. The hotel has two carparks, one with a few parking spaces next to the hotel, the other with more parking spaces behind the hotel. When you arrive at the hotel, you can get into the front desk and ask them to show you the direction.

Big room, great breakfast

Reviewed By Bobcrankypants

This is a pretty new hotel and my single room was pretty big, new, and clean, with a desk and couch. The hotel’s conveniently near to Morioka station and a short walk to the main shopping area. I had breakfast and it was a great selection of food that included ice cream and many awesome spreads for my toast - spreads like peach and matcha butter and coffee butter.

Good value for money

Location may not be ideal for travelers without private transport.Otherwise, it's a hotel with clean decent sized rooms that comes with free parking. I last stayed here in 2016 and it is obvious the hotel had gone some renovations to keep up. The room itself looks new, and gives a nice unblocked view of rice fields. Breakfast is normal buffet style. Do not miss having a meal at the Yakiniku Restaurant just beside. Reasonable pricing and very delicious!

good sized rooms, next to the train station and fish market/souvenir shops, easy access to central Kamaishi

Reviewed By mt188

This is a brand new hotel that opened up a little over a year ago right next to the Kamaishi train station. On the other side is the Kamaishi fish market (called Sunfish) and souvenir market (Sea Plaza). There is also a rental car lot in front of the train station and a Lawson's convenience store a few yards away. Beyond the Sunfish market is a Maiya Supermarket, drugstore (more like Walgreens, but apparently doesn't dispense prescription drugs), K's Denki (like a Best Buy for electronic goods). Behind Ki's Denki is the post office, so lots of conveniences in the hotel's surrounding areas. The location looks industrial, but it is about a 2 minute walk to the town's center (other side of the Kasshi river). The rooms were fairly spacious, considering this is Japan. The double twin we stayed in might be like a room in a Motel 6 in the US (but a lot cleaner and nicer). The room had an empty mini fridge, hot pot, complimentary tea, small area to hang clothes, but no closet, minimal drawer space (a small desk drawer and a small cupboard like space under the luggage rest). WiFi was good, although you have to keep signing in each time you turn on your computer/device (or I had to). Service was excellent, but there seemed to be only one English speaker amongst the staff who was only there during certain (peak?) hours. Most of the clientele are Japanese citizens, few foreigners. The breakfast buffet was nice, and offered many local seafoods such as mekabu (seaweed), shirasu (tiny white fish) and soba noodles, as well as some Western foods such as scrambled eggs, pastries, salad, potatoes. The menu items changed slightly each day. It wasn't the best breakfast buffet I'd ever had in Japan, but it was filling, freshly made and a great start to my day! The lobby area is spacious, and is adjacent to the restaurant, which seems to serve lunch and dinner, too. There are a few coin laundry facilities on the 3rd and 5th floors (tip: soap is already provided in the machines, but the dryer isn't very efficient and I needed to run the separate dryer cycle two times to get my cotton t shirts dry). There is brand spanking new bath on the top floor (often translated 'public bath', osento are communal bath areas for use by guests and not the general public!). There are indoor and outdoor baths. The outdoor bath has a lovely mini bamboo garden. I have stayed at several hotels in Kamaishi, and this is probably the town's best.

good hotel with affordable price

Reviewed By tell_traveler

Chose to stay in Kitakami as a base to explore Hiraizumi and Hanamaki as the affordable hotels in those other cities are quite full during the date. From Kitakami, it is only 1 local train away to those cities. Arrived by highway bus on the west side of the station, have to use underpass in front of Met Hotel (not the one in front of the station/bus stop) to cross to the east side/shinkansen side of the station. From the east exit, it is only 1 minute walk to the left to reach the hotel. It is clean as could be expected as the usual standard for Toyoko Inn and now equipped with strong wifi at all rooms as well. The size for single room is adequate, equipped with double-bed size. My only complain is the pillow provided is Japanese style (small with beans/straws in one side), but other than that, the room is really great for the price. They provide curry rice in the lobby as free service in the evening and breakfast in the morning. There are several convenience stores behind the hotel, but many restaurants are located at the western part of the station. If you stay more than 1 night, you might want to participate in their eco plan program that give rate reduction for every consecutive second night without cleaning service (but they still provide clean towel every morning).

Simple comforts, authentic local touches, peaceful surroundings, relaxing hot springs

Reviewed By mzungurashii

Hotel Folkloro has for years delivered simple comforts and excellent service, a notable find in Towa, a rural little farm village. The hotel is a little getaway right off the highway and a walk from the local train station, which is an easy 10-15 minutes' ride from the Tohoku shinkansen line. A great location for visiting anywhere in Tsuchizawa (the little village, with one lovely coffee shop, local pub, local restaurant, farm shops, etc.) and the museums in the area. I have stayed several times over the past dozen years, and I frequently visited the adjacent hot springs for years before that. Hotel Folkloro is a small rural hotel (now incorporated into a small chain), but delivers bigger town quality service and is very well maintained. The rooms are neatly done and have all necessary elements, but they are fairly basic and some can be narrow -- at least, narrower than my expectations in a farm village where space shouldn't come at a huge premium. Bathrooms feel cramped, but the whole point is to ignore the tub, put on the robe & slippers, and go soak the hot springs down the hall. Also, they have REALLY fast internet if you connect by ethernet cable in the lobby, where there are little desks. I've done serious work from there... in a robe. I can't remember how good the wifi is. The little local touches and public areas are what stand out to me: good personalised service, clean and neat everything, natural wood and minimalist toned interior design, two hilarious pet goats in a little fenced area in the back, super comfy couches to melt into and read a book around windows overlooking simple manicured landscaping and rice fields, quiet and clean air and nature all around, a little shop with delicious high-quality local snacks like ice cream from the nearby dairy and handmade gifts, a lovely fresh breakfast buffet run by the same the husband & wife for many years, a surprisingly extensive menu and nice little bar stocking local beer... and of course, down the hallway (which itself is not so nice... just a covered walkway, chilly in cold seasons) there is the hot springs around which the hotel was built. An authentic local experience, it's small but well maintained, the water is excellent (and considered medicinal), and you'll be alongside local residents just coming in for a morning bath. Women and men alternate sides, and the rotenburu outdoor area is especially nice in the winter when the snow is falling. The masseur in residence is also excellent. (The food at the restaurant in the hot springs is not great... just go back to the hotel, or across the parking lot there is a small freestanding restaurant offering locally sourced food.)

Great Location

Reviewed By Freedomtrail

We stayed here during the ski season in February. Pros – Free shuttle from the train station, friendly staff, easy access to the ski area and lifts, clean room. Cons – Everything is spread out, so a lot of walking. The breakfast buffet is very simple, nothing fancy. We also heard a low “dinging” sound in our bedroom, especially at night. We mentioned this to the staff and they said “No, there is no sound coming from that floor.” Excuse me? Heard it every night and brought it up to the staff again and they said “We will look into it.” Still haven’t heard back from them.

Excellent value for money

Reviewed By C7793ZJjanek

Best value in Japan! Paid total of Yen 6,000 for a double room. Newly refurbished hotel. Compared to similar style hotels (ie business hotel close to station) the lobby was big with lots of seating. Corridors were wide. The room itself although compact felt bigger - we had 2 chairs and a small movable table as well as normal desk. Good lighting. Nice attention to detail. Got a good feeling when I booked the room over the phone with Furukawa san who was very friendly and helpful. Short walk from station. Convenience store very close by. No onsen. Did not eat at hotel.
