Reviewed By HanseySydneyThis hotel is a hidden gem! The rooms weren’t that big but the beds were really comfortable and clean. It was about 10 mins walk to the station and the massive discount shopping centre. They also have a shuttle service to the ski field, shops and station. They provide heaps of free toiletries such as shower caps, face masks etc. The staff were amazing and super helpful. Breakfast was basic but quite tasty. Very close walk to some great restaurants as well. Highly recommend.

Ikoisanso is a small boutique hotel with 60 years history, which is located in the heart of Karuizawa, the one of most prestiges resorts in Japan. It`s a hideout Japanese Inn, just 10 min walk from Nakakaruizawa station conveniently. It`s in the best location to enjoy Karuizawa nature. Karuizawa has a classy image, however, Ikoisanso wants provide our guests a reasonably priced stay and let our guests enjoy karuizawa in their own ways.
Penny wise, maybe pound foolish
Reviewed By itrytobehelpfulAlthough this hotel had one of the cheaper room prices (for the duration that we were staying), the overall experience was average / slightly below average and on hindsight we might have splurged a little to upgrade to a bigger room in a more central location. The room was very small – after clearing out whatever furniture we could (table was packed in the cabinet where the bedding was kept and most other things had to be stacked on top of each other to maximise space), there was barely enough space to lay out two mattresses right beside our luggages (note that you have to set up the beds yourself). We spotted some strange black spots on the futon covers which deterred us from using the futons. We did, however, appreciate that the room came with a small refrigerator, a small key-operated safe box and a working heater. The walls and floors are thin, so you will hear footsteps along the corridor and (if you are unlucky, as we were, to have a room next to the toilet) gurgling sounds from the plumbing system. Bathrooms and restrooms are shared. The communal shower area on the first floor has a small bath (could accommodate approximately 3 strangers, any more would be uncomfortable), but the water is still and I'm not certain if it was actually from the hot springs. We were grateful that the usual amenities were provided (toiletries, body lotion, hairdryers). There were other onsens nearby which were open for day trips, but we were turned away by the prices (bearing in mind that we had just travelled from onsen heaven, Kusatsu town). Location-wise, while we were given a free shuttle ride from and to Karuizawa Station during check-in and check-out, we had to find our own way around the rest of the time. There are some attractions in the Naka-Karuizawa area, but the main highlights are nearer to the Karuizawa Station. The walk from the hotel to Naka-Karuizawa Station (one stop away from Karuizawa Station) takes about 10-15 minutes, and the street lights can get rather dim by 7pm and are almost non-existent by 10pm. Alternatively, there are buses that ply the area, but the bus fares were nearly double the train fares and accessibility of information was an issue (it was hard looking up bus timetables online). Another alternative is to rent bicycles from the hotel at ¥1000 per day. Service-wise – hit and miss. Some of the staff were friendly and helpful, others not so. A few of them were able to communicate in English. Food-wise, there were some decent options (e.g. Harunire Terrace), but not always budget-friendly and most close by evening (sans restaurants, with pretty steep prices). There is a 7-11 about 100m away but consumption of food in the store is not allowed. It closes at 11pm. All in all, if you're fine with sacrificing some creature comforts and travelling longer distances to save on accommodation, this hotel could be one of your considerations. But if your budget is not the main priority, there may be better options elsewhere.

Reviewed By KonaHualalai私の中で数少ない教えたくないホテルの1つ。元々店舗だったところを改装してホテルにしていますが、センスもよく、よくニューヨークに泊まっていましたが、その頃を思い出させる感じ。広さも十分あり、アメニティも充実。私が泊まった和室のお部屋は床暖房もあり、こんなに快適で、こんなにリーズナブルなホテルは初めてです。普段は外資系ホテルチェーンに泊まりますが、全く引けをとらないです。スタッフもとてもフレンドリーでいて、丁寧。また来たいと思います。

Reviewed By peipei_tw這次入住輕井澤選擇此間民宿，地點距離王子outlet約走路七分鐘，離車站約12分鐘(穿越outlet)，附近有牛角燒肉及蕎麥麵店，約走路7分鐘可到便利商店，房間簡單乾淨，可惜我們入住四晚都沒有打掃服務，只有將垃圾桶清空，並沒有更換床單，但要多的衣架或枕頭服務人員態度都不錯，一二樓都有交誼廳，並附有微波爐可以吃東西

Lovely historic mountain retreat
Reviewed By meganmz8Our two night stay at Hotel Tsuruya was very cozy. We stayed in a traditional ryokan room that had a nice view of fall trees. The seating was comfortable and our table had a warmer which made it that much nicer in the chilly evenings! The room also included tea, television, books about Karuizawa (only in Japanese, however) and yukatas. The futons were pretty comfortable compared to others we'd slept on. Note that this hotel is historic and it shows. If you're looking for modern lodging, this isn't it. It's worth noting that this hotel is at the top of the main shopping street in Kyu-Karuizawa. In the off season it felt a little eerie being at the top of the quiet hill once everything closed up for the evening. If you go out for dinner and drinks you'll have more options the farther down you go (between an 8 - 20 minute walk). There isn't much in the immediate area. The staff was very nice and accommodating and overall I would recommend this hotel!

A Peaceful Retreat in Nature

We went on our own little architecture tour looking at all the unique properties dotted within the forests, and decided to stay at Hoshinoya Karuizawa for a peaceful retreat. Unfortunately, it was rainy season, so we couldn't do any of the bird-watching or eco walking tours offered by the hotel. Loved the onsen experience, the kaiseki "zen" meals, wandering around the gardens, and relaxing on the balcony to fresh air... all contributed to a wholesome and wellness retreat experience. The Hoshinoya brand is luxury that's not over-the-top, with a unique traditional Japanese touch that you can only experience in Japan, for example offering the experience of zen gardens (designed by experts), and the art of bathing (wearing yukata and geta), Japanese interiors, etc. All these details well thought out for the guest to have a deeper cultural experience of Japan.

Poor value
Reviewed By Jeremy63We stayed for one night for a family of four. The hotel Kose Onsen ryokan is quite worn and showing its age. The setting is beautiful and nature surrounds the building. However, the rooms are worn down, hallway and building is old. We ordered dinner and breakfast which was ample and delicious. Not for kids, they had trouble with the diversity of small dishes and tastes. I thought food was great, but not a good value for a family of four which was the most expensive night of our two week trip to Japan. The hotel recommended a taxi, which was 3000 yen. In the morning we went to the Shirotaki falls which was incredible. I do not recommend this ryokan for families. A quiet couples get away for a night maybe if worn out retro fashion is your jam. But this is one of the most expensive regions of Japan and it was a very expensive night when food was included. We didn’t appreciate the smoke. Kitchen staff were very professional, but front desk staff felt stiff and inflexible.
