A great stay!

Reviewed By Krie H

I booked a Japanese room and it's a pretty big one. Room is a bit old but clean, I had a great sleep during the night. Although receptionist is cold with broken English, they have great dinner buffet friendly staff in restaurant. Surely I'll come back again! Some comment said they have very small toilet and bathroom, it's true but almost all onsen hotels remain the same design in Japan. If you want big toilet space you shouldn't have chosen to stay at an onsen hotel.

Luxurious Stay

Reviewed By TanSS

We were picked up by he hotel shuttle from Shin-Hanamaki Stn. There’s a tourist desk at the station you can make enquiries if in doubt. The reception on arrival was attentive and efficient. The low rise complex looked new and blended in with the surroundings. In the center courtyard was a landscaped garden which looked very pretty after the brief snowfall. Facilities were spick and span. We had a large well appointed western bedroom overlooking greenery. We took the walking trail to the waterfall and the remnant autumn colours were still beautiful. It snowed briefly and the landscape was beautiful. The indoor and outdoor onsen overlooked autumn color foliage. Onsen water was silky smooth, ph9 . There is a sauna too. Meals were in a dining room and were pretty good. We stayed 2 days and the menu was changed. Expensive but worth the visit.

Wonderful onsen

Reviewed By JuhaUitto

I've visited and stayed at numerous onsens all over Japan over the past quarter century. Yuukaen is one of the best. The natural setting in the middle of the mountains is lovely. A river runs through it and the mountains are densely forested -- they even warn about bears. The hotel is beautiful (unlike so many other of the larger onsen hotels) as are the rooms. Ours had a spacious tatami room, a side room with two Western beds, a forest viewing room, and a comfortable bathroom. The dinner and breakfast were fabulous. Most importantly, it has two excellent bath areas, both with outdoor rotemburos. Could have stayed a week.

Great stay but a bit off the beaten path

Reviewed By Hong69

Stayed at the Sansuikaku wing (which is the newer and upmarket part) but I would suggest to visit the other 2 wings which offer a glimpse of how a traditional house. Multiple onsens throughout all 3 wings - great variety! There was even 3 smaller private onsens for families/couples. Enjoyed the big rooms (with river views; toilet but no shower), service and the multi-course japanese dinner too. If I want to be picky, it will be that its not the easiest to get too by train. You can drop off at either Hanamaki or Shin-Hanamaki stations and there will be scheduled buses to pick you up (1 run by the onsen association and another by the Osawa). However, you need to take note of the specific timings. Otherwise, I was told that a taxi from Shin-Hanamaki would set me back about 6000 Yen.

Simple comforts, authentic local touches, peaceful surroundings, relaxing hot springs

Reviewed By mzungurashii

Hotel Folkloro has for years delivered simple comforts and excellent service, a notable find in Towa, a rural little farm village. The hotel is a little getaway right off the highway and a walk from the local train station, which is an easy 10-15 minutes' ride from the Tohoku shinkansen line. A great location for visiting anywhere in Tsuchizawa (the little village, with one lovely coffee shop, local pub, local restaurant, farm shops, etc.) and the museums in the area. I have stayed several times over the past dozen years, and I frequently visited the adjacent hot springs for years before that. Hotel Folkloro is a small rural hotel (now incorporated into a small chain), but delivers bigger town quality service and is very well maintained. The rooms are neatly done and have all necessary elements, but they are fairly basic and some can be narrow -- at least, narrower than my expectations in a farm village where space shouldn't come at a huge premium. Bathrooms feel cramped, but the whole point is to ignore the tub, put on the robe & slippers, and go soak the hot springs down the hall. Also, they have REALLY fast internet if you connect by ethernet cable in the lobby, where there are little desks. I've done serious work from there... in a robe. I can't remember how good the wifi is. The little local touches and public areas are what stand out to me: good personalised service, clean and neat everything, natural wood and minimalist toned interior design, two hilarious pet goats in a little fenced area in the back, super comfy couches to melt into and read a book around windows overlooking simple manicured landscaping and rice fields, quiet and clean air and nature all around, a little shop with delicious high-quality local snacks like ice cream from the nearby dairy and handmade gifts, a lovely fresh breakfast buffet run by the same the husband & wife for many years, a surprisingly extensive menu and nice little bar stocking local beer... and of course, down the hallway (which itself is not so nice... just a covered walkway, chilly in cold seasons) there is the hot springs around which the hotel was built. An authentic local experience, it's small but well maintained, the water is excellent (and considered medicinal), and you'll be alongside local residents just coming in for a morning bath. Women and men alternate sides, and the rotenburu outdoor area is especially nice in the winter when the snow is falling. The masseur in residence is also excellent. (The food at the restaurant in the hot springs is not great... just go back to the hotel, or across the parking lot there is a small freestanding restaurant offering locally sourced food.)

Fantastic Experience!

what a treat! My room was overlooking a stream and a small forest, and the color-changing of the trees was just spectacular. Hotel itself very nice 5star, rooms are gorgeous with a small seating area. And such nice ceramic onsen on a balcony with natural hot springs water to soak in.... what a way to end and begin your day! I have also had a traditional Japanese massage; oh it was the best one I ever had! And, it was what I needed. Not to be missed. And now dinner; At least 10 courses each dish purely delicious, and food would just melt in your mouth. Excellent service, excellent presentation, and excellent dining experience. Breakfast traditional Japanese breakfast; great taste of local foods.
