The best available Bed and Breakfast Inns to stay near Atami

May 9, 2023 Mikaela Didonna

A coastal resort complete with hot springs, Atami has been a favorite vacation spot for Tokyoites dating back to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Though the city's main draws are its beach boardwalk and spas, visitors can take in some history staying in early 20th-century private villas converted to inns and catching the afternoon Geisha dance performance at Geigi Kenban.

A mixture of amazing and yikes

Reviewed By Squishy V

First of all, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and the breakfast and dinner foods offered at the buffet is plentiful and delicious. The onsen has a nice atmosphere and there are many activities available in the facility. The view is beautiful, and the futons were comfortable (though we have no prior experiences to compare it to). However, the room was sadly lackluster. We paid almost $400AUD and got a room that was quite old. My partner has a tattoo and thus was not able to enter the onsens, but we were assured that there are bathtubs in our room. We were excited, only to find a very old, brown tile stained "bathtub" next to the shower which still had some soap residue on the faucet. Out of the 5 places we have stayed at during our trip to Japan, this was by far the most expensive (at least 3 times more per day) but the rooms were of worst quality.

Beautiful Ocean View

Reviewed By hahaue

You notice the sweet smell of tatami as you enter the room---very traditional Japanese style spacious room with a beautiful ocean view. We stayed here for two nights and got up early to see the sunrise in which the sun rises over the horizon. At night you can see the water reflecting the bright moon light and creating a "moon road." Spa was great. Other than the big baths, they have three smaller free open-air baths which are available to those who are staying there. When you use it, you can lock it up and have it all to yourself. It is great for couples and families. We listened to the waves as we dipped in the warm onsen up on the top floor---so relaxing. Food was delicious. They can cater to some of your needs in terms of likes, dislikes, food allergies, etc. We decided to have every meal in our room, so it was private and comfortable. You can choose to do so although it costs a bit more. Dinner and breakfast are served as very traditional Japanese style. Dinner is a big course meal. They did serve us different fish and other delicacies for two nights we stayed, but that was probably the limit for us since it was a lot of food. We would love to stay at New Sagamiya again. It's proximity to Tokyo is a big plus. I highly recommend this place as a weekend getaway from a city.

Weekend get away

Pros - great location, great service, nice room Con - room was too hot, paper napkin/oshibori This is billed as luxury hotel and for the most part it lives up to it. The staff was very professional and helpful. The rooms were large and with nice furniture and toiletries. The hotel even has a special butlers cubicle where if you wanted room service or extra pillows and what nots, they will just place it in a locked cabinet from the outside of your room and you can open the cabinet from inside and retrieve the items, minimizing physical contact or if you just can't be bothered to put on make-up or clothes.. lol... The room comes with a mini fridge with free beverages. And the welcome treat was also delicious, green tea mochi. Our room came with private outside onsen/bathtub. Other rooms even comes with a hammock, I assume those are on the first floor. But the 2nd floor has a better view. The hotel does also come with a public onsen in a separate building. The onsen has a sauna and 2 onsens, one inside and one outside (rotemburo). The mens side and the women's side alternate so that the guest can experience 4 different tubs all together and 2 different sceneries. Right outside the entrance to the onsens there are 2 mini fridges, one filled with drinks and the other filled with sherbert, all free of course. The downside when we were there was the air conditioner controls. We didn't have access/rights to change from heating to cooling. The thing was only set for heating so the room was too hot. Luckily we were on the second floor so I slept with the door to the patio partially open with the extra beddings/paddings that were in the room. The other downside came during meal time. Yes there was the pandemic but, the hotel still provided us with regular table cloth napkins (great). But the oshibori (wet towel) was on of those disposable paper napkin that you would get from JR train. And yes they replaced it once during the meal but it took away from the grandness of the hotel. Other hotel do provide warm, wet oshibori. Some come in plastic that you unwrap yourself and others come unwrapped on a plate. Overall the experience was nice. Would I we try them again? Probably but hopefully the 2 cons are addressed by then.
