Waipu Museum

Reviewed By Babsdranny - Ingleton, United Kingdom

We visited the museum as a result of seeing all the information boards around Waipu about residents who had lost their lives in the Great War. The museum tells a fantastic story about the original Scottish settlers and their hardships. A small admission cost well spent and the staff inside were helpful and informative.

Waipu Cave

Reviewed By Jessisaw

Waipu Caves are not only free to visit but they really are amazing. Beautiful rock formations, set out in the countryside and with no restrictions on taking photos, it’s the perfect place to spot glow worms.
Be prepared to get wet and muddy and take a torch. I’m 158cm tall and the water was at mid-thigh-depth in January. Still it was worth wading through for the photos. Be careful on the rocks as they are slippy. I found it better to actually walk straight through the creek. I wore jandals as I didn’t want to get wet trainers and it was too slippy being barefoot.
Have fun!

Piroa Falls is probably one of the more accessible Waterfalls where a short 10min walk brought us from the parking area to the Falls. GPS may not bring one to the entranceaccurately but there are signs along the road closer to the Waterfalls to direct one to where to stop. Be prepared to drive through some gravel roads nearing the destination.

Uretiti Beach

Despite being winter this beach is still nice to visit and take long walks or just experience the long white sands. Seems popular with local fishermen. It's my favourite for kite fishing. Can be exposed when winds are off shore, but magic when sunny and no wind.

Alpaca Beach Walk

A unique opportunity to experience beautiful New Zealand Beaches in the company of adorable alpacas. All our alpacas are halter trained so you can safely walk down the beach leading your own alpaca. You can choose whether or not you want to venture into the shallow water. The alpacas will be happy to go into the water up to knee level, especially if it is a hot day.The Beaches are quiet with magnificent views of distant Islands and headlands. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions about these gentle animals with their huge eyes and long eyelashes. The alpaca beach walk is now only available to our farmstay guests. Please see our website for details.

We headed out with Pav today with three lovely alpacas in tow.
We had been chided back home about spending money on such an experience but myself and my seven year old daughter absolutely loved it. Pav was kind and very alert about possible interruptions around us. Her love of the animals was completely apparent.
We spent a wonderful hour with Pav and her furry friends. An experience to remember for sure.

Waipu Golf Club

Tucked discreetly alongside SH1, between the townships of Waipu and Ruakaka and overlooking the magnificent Bream Bay lies this great links golf course. With a reputation of some of the best greens in New Zealand this course will offer you a great golf experience which you can top off with a lunch in the very hospitable Linksview Cafe while admiring some of the best outlooks of any golf club. The course is naturally sand based hence it is generally unaffected by wet weather but presents the golfer with some great challenges and outstanding panoramas from tees and greens.

A shame the cafe was so bad. Clueless waitress who was also rude. Had eggs Benedict that was served on cheap white sliced bread and had to search for the hollandaise. Interior looks drab. Probably the reason we were the only people in there.

Waipu Pancakes Rocks

Reviewed By Cheng Gee T

Best to park vehicles at carpark opposite Waipu Cove Cafe and follow the Waipu Coastal Trail walkway (about 2-3 hours hike). Climb up the ridge to get a fabulous view of Waipu white sandy beach to the off-shore Islands. Continue on the walkways and soon reach the beginning of the pancakes rocks lining the cliffs and beach (at least a km long). Keep clear of private properties and their electric fencing. About halfway there's a path down to the beach to view the pancakes rocks and enjoy a canister of coffee and snacks/lunch.
