Definitely off the beaten path...was very grateful for our 4WD vehicle. Isolated, quiet, beautiful. Take the time to hike to all of the Waterfalls and take plenty of water! My trekking poles also came in handy for this hike.

We travelled to Costa Rica with our 2 children aged 10 and 13. We came across Pacific Trade Winds by accident while beginning to organize our trip. We are so thankful that we did! After changing our itinerary many many times, we finally settled on one. It was perfect! We didn't have to do a thing once we arrived. The transportation (drivers - Roy, Carlos and Willie) were outstanding and always early for pick up. The accommodations were exactly as described and the activities/excursions we selected were awesome. When we wanted to make minor changes to our pick up times, a quick email was all it took. I will use them again when we return! Gracias!

Centro de Rescate Las Pumas

Reviewed By Sandy T - Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico

I do not know how anyone could give this place less than 5 stars. If I could give it a higher rating, I would.
First - this is volunteer-run, and not owned by a millionaire. They do the absolute best they can, and the stories will tell you that. So will the animals. You can tell when an animal is not given love or respect.
Second - what they try to do here is so beautiful! Hearing and/or Reading the stories of what these animals have been through, how they came to be here rescued from horrible "homes", why some of them can never be released again due to that former mistreament... And knowing how they work with local schools to educate children to respect and love animals! Do you see why they deserve higher than 5 stars???
Last - they do not have the best gift shop around, but they do have a gift shop. Animal lovers, skip the hotel gift shops. Spend your money here and let these wonderful creatures gain from the small profits. Buy the tshirt. Get the typical coffee mug. Give your love to the Puma Rescue Center!!
We were there during a downpour. I was the only one brave enough to slosh around to see every single animal. Meanwhile, the macaws and parrots entertained the few others on our tour with gleeful song the whole time! Because of the weather, we were given the option to bypass this part of the tour. I was soaked to the bone, but would not have missed this for anything. Definitely the highlight of sooooo many amazing tours we did here. I would go again, give my hard-earned dollars to this wonderful rescue center, buy more tshirts and wooden souvenirs. I recommend you do the same!

This is my second time on the lake with Sander. The first was with a group of friends for a day of wakeboarding. Sander is a great guy and a really knowledgeable instructor. He can give you the smallest of pointers that are a big help for beginners or for the intermediate riders to take it to the next level.
My most recent visit was with my wife and 3 year old boy. My wife and I wakeboarded(her first time) and then we did some tubing with our little one. Sander is very cautious and safe with the littles, so rest assured mommies that this can be a fun excursion for all ages. We had a blast.
Sander has his boat in a private little cove that is protected from the wind and surrounded by the lush, green Costa Rica hillside. This is a really beautiful vantage point to see the Arenal area. This might not be on your "To Do List" while in Costa Rica, but it should be!
PS: there is a microbrewery up the hill that is a nice way to follow up your day on the lake.

Arenal Kayaks

A relaxing time on Lake Arenal enjoying the wildlife, the fauna, and a swim in the warm lake waters. Tours are guided and last about 2-hours. Our kayaks are sit-on-top and very easy to manage. We have single and double kayaks.

Reviewed By Adrien T

Beth and Jeff came to pick us up from our car at a location near the lake. They provided a very reasonable price (the least expensive of any kayak tours I've seen here) and showed us a very peasant time along the shore of Arenal lake. Sadly no animals were seen but that is obviously out of the control of the tour.

Our experience with Viento Fresco was certainly an enjoyable one. The hike in to see the several Waterfalls was scenic, the forest was beautiful, and of course the Waterfalls were attractive. As you wind your way from the main building to the falls, the scenery yields pastures and rolling hills that are also quite picturesque.
Obviously the Waterfalls are what visitors go there for, but to be honest, they are not the most amazing Waterfalls in the world, nor the most impressive in Costa Rica. They do offer good vantage points for photographs though, and the last waterfall has a shack with washrooms where you can change before going swimming. That is certainly a plus.
The best part of the experience is the horseback ride. The horses are very well behaved and easily controlled. The ride up the hillside was steep and stunning. Definitely the best horseback ride I've done. The downside though is that the guides cut it short by half an hour, ostensibly to accomodate another tour. However, we sat around with our horses for 20 minutes before the horses went up the road without us and we still beat them back by vehicle. It made no sense, and it felt like the company was cutting corners.
The guide during the hike did appear knowledgeable, but his English was wanting and he was not very communicative. Generally, he would stop to point out interesting things for the people at the front of the group, but not the back. I felt that we really would not have missed much without him; certainly a disappointment.
The food at the soda was decent and the beer was cheap. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, but more could be done to improve it.

We were told about La Reserva on a taxi ride from La Fortuna and immediately booked a tour for an empty morning in our schedule. Our guide was a local - expert in English and "Bird" and everything to do with the forest. I'd thoroughly recommend the tour to anyone passing through the Tileran area that wants a real authentic experience of the reforestation initiatives in Costa Rica.

Leona's Art Studio

Beautiful art gallery nestled atop a hill overlooking Arenal Lake. The art created by the gallery's owner (Leona) is colorful and full of symbolism. All visitors are welcome!

Reviewed By Mauricio D - Tilaran, Costa Rica

Leona's Art Studio is a nice gallery located on the road that borders Lake Arenal. That means that if you're in transit between La Fortuna and the Beaches of Guanacaste or between Monte Verde and La Fortuna the gallery is on the way.
The gallery displays art created by its owner (Barbara Leona). The paintings and sculptures are colorful, beautiful and very mystical. In fact, the whole place has a mystical touch!
The views from the gallery are commanding and you can have coffee in the shop. Barbara looks genuinely happy when she greets visitors. Beautiful place. Take into account that you have to go up a small hill in order to reach Barbara's house and gallery.

Waterfall la Piedra del Indio

Reviewed By sivartyad - La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica

I went on this incredible ride in January with three friends and we had a wonderful experience! The views of Costa Rica were like no other as we rode through wide open hills and Valleys en route to the waterfall. The waterfall itself, surrounded by natural jungle, was massive! Broken up into three tiers, we visited each platform and go to swim as well. There was a super cool aboriginal rock carving that we saw during the ride as well! Our guide, Alejandro, was super informative pointing out birds and monkeys along the way. I would highly recommend this tour!
