Where to Eat in Zihuatanejo: The Best Restaurants and Bars

August 9, 2017 Viva Honore

While resorts continue to spring up, "Zihua" remains determined to maintain its small-town flavor. The brick-paved "fisherman's walk," a nod to the region's seafaring roots, stretches along the town center. Because the nightlife is mostly informal, Zihua is particularly appealing to couples and those seeking an escape from coastal party towns.

Our concierge recommended we come here as a place where locals go. We had a great time and the food was fantastic! I was disappointed to find out they were out of the Polpo (whole octopus) after I had my heart set on it, but he Thai shrimp was very good! My wife had the lamb chops and said they were the best lamb chops she has had! Our friends ordered the linguini and clams and the giant ravioli with shrimp and they were thoroughly impressed as well. We had 2 great bottles of C.A. Ceto barberesco mexican red wine which was fantastic! Try the Ceto wine whenever you can as they make great wines and it’s great to see suck fabulous wines coming out of Mexico! We would definitely recommend anyone in Ixtapa come for a meal!

Restaurantes Mexicanos Any es un lugar orgullosamente mexicano, lleno de tradiciones, colorido y que ofrece comida 100% mexicana.

Any is worth a visit just for the decor, carved and colorfully painted chairs, and the absolutely amazing bathroom fixtures. That said, the food is great, the service friendly and attentive, and the prices very reasonable. We did have some issues as our Spanish is poor, and the restaurant staff's English was somewhat limited, but we got by. When we entered, we were going to choose a streetside table near the entrance, but the hostess waved us off and led us to a streetside table at the front of the restaurant across from Banamex, which turned out to be a much better location, so we were off to a great start. This is very authentic Mexican food, and we're very American, so we struggled with making sense of the menu and choosing items we thought we'd like. We'd never had mole sauce and my wife was hesitant to try it, so she ended up with burritos which were a little dry, but that's our fault, and other than that the food was very good. I'd like to go back and be a little more adventurous with the menu, and when we return to the area we will return to Any.

We visit Zihuatanejo regularly. Sometimes more than once per year. Lety's is always on the top of our list. Our fisherman, Jaime Vargas recommended this restaurant several years ago and we haven't stopped going. There simply isn't any better coconut shrimp in Zihuataneo or just anywhere. Lety is always gracious and takes time to thank her customers.
Lety's is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the time to find. Just go over the walking bridge by the fishing pier and walk half a block to the right. You will find Lety's on the left side of the street. Be sure to try the coconut shrimp. You won't be disappointed.

Ordered 3 different pizzas, and each had its own unique flavour. The wood fired oven does a great job on the crust, and the toppings are generous, not overloaded though. The outdoor area is under a palapa, and was comfortable in regards to temperature. Service was friendly, and personable. Margs were very tasty, and they have some BIG sizes. All in our group enjoyed the whole evening. Definitely one of the best pizzas we’ve had down here.

I've walked away from a number of restaurant disappointed, but never as p.o.ed as this one, in addition to feeling embarrassed because we recommended it to the other 6 people who were with us. In addition to the various meals not being very good, the prices were expensive and the service was not very attentive. The lengthy meal (3 hours) was exasperated by the staff's concussion in addition to deceitfulnes of who had what. 4 checks and every couple got charged for water. A seafood pasta dish, special that day, was explained by the waiter that it had shrimp, clams, fish, octopus and lobster in it. When I inquired about the cost, I was told it was 520 pesos. Very expensive for a pasta dish in Mexico, but then again this was Espuma. I ordered it as did several others at my table. It was served in a medium low side soup bowl and consisted of 3 little shrimp and 2 small clams, a fairly tastie pomodoro sause all for just 520 pesos. If you didn't know any better and the waiter asked when ordering if you wanted lobster, you were billed another 520 pesos. The Silver Cuervo margaritas they were pushing were 200 pesos. And the usual $8 retail bottles of wine could be had starting at 450 pesos and up. Let's see, a half hour to get a menu, another 20 minute to give an order, a hour before being served and a half hour to receive a bill after requesting it. 3 hours later myself and others walked away hungry and p.o.ed. Feeling very disappointed for the group and embarrassed because they were there at our recommendation, my wife spoke to the manager and she offer my wife and I a free meal. My wife politely declined stating (correctly) that she would never be able to get her husband to return.

Otilia's Restaurant

This restaurant is located on a small cove and can only be reached by water taxi from the pier. There are about 10 restaurants on this isolated cove. They have no actual address, no electricty, no telephone and all food/beverages are brought in by the water taxi's. Otilia's is mentioned many times under Things to Do on the Zihua Forum under "Las Gatas" and should be listed under Restaurants. This is a very popular place with great food and fantastic location. You can enjoy your meal with your feet in the sand and the very clear ocean water a few yards away. Snorkeling is also available from the white sand beach.

We just went there today. Haven’t been to Las Gatas to snorkel for many years. As with so many other places that have many people, the fish aren’t plentiful anymore. The rocks to the west do have some, and the water is wonderful.
I think it might have been Francisco who corralled is at the muelle (pier), but that’s not why we stopped at Otilia’s. It was clean and looked nice, so that’s where we stopped. Francisco did up sell us on way more food than we needed, but we shared with strangers: guacamole, whole red snapper (covered in onions [safe] and sliced tomatoes [not safe]. The guac and chips were really good; the fish so-so. David, a young waiter, kept us in beers and rum and cokes. The bill was 780p, not unusual.
It’s a nice place to enjoy the north bay of Las Gatas. They lent us beach towels to use, since the cushions are vinyl.
I had saved Otilia’s on TripAdvisor, but I only realized it after we had left. Someone must have recommended it. It’s a good choice.

This restaurant has excellent food and service. It has huge screen tv's for any game that you want to watch or just tv while you dine. It's also a great place to just have a drink with friends after the beach. My only complaint would be the manager there, she is very rude and mean to her employees in front of the customers. The food, servers are great and the service is A++.
