Nara Plaza Hotel

Good Value

I stayed for 1 night at the Nara Plaza Hotel. The girl who checked me in (I don`t remember her name, Nakamura or Nakayama) was really kind and polite. Another girl in the evening whose name was Nagahara was also really kind. I lost my wallet and I got it back with everything and nothing was missing. Room was good but there were no water bottle inside the room. The pool and onsen was really good. Check out was a little bit slow, maybe because there was not enough counter. Overall, the experience was good. Too be honest, there are not so much shops nearby, however, there is a convenience store which is open until around 11pm. And There is Gusto cafe (family restaurant) which is open until 1:30am. There are other plenty of restaurants also but they closed at around 10pm.

It feels like staying in a japanese style houses but it is quite far away although it is very near a train Station. If u stay in a smaller room u'll feel cozy but in a bigger room it is quite cold cause i was there during winter. U have to share a bathroom but my room was just next to it.

A Motor Hotel in Nara

Reviewed By Michael L

The concept of a motel (or motor-hotel) is a distinctly American one. These are places you usually drive to, and often enough can park right outside your room. Other countries do not have motels. The Grandvrio Hotel in Nara, however, could almost be seen as a sort of higher-class motel. And the reason I say this has mostly to do with the location. Nara being a popular tourist spot, it is increasingly difficult to open new hotels in the city itself – turf is expensive, and good locations are already taken. So in this case they decided to ignore the three rules of real-estate – location, location, location – and build a new hotel (opened in 2018) outside the city itself in a rather nondescript, semi-industrial, semi-agricultural area. So unless you have a car (or a lot of patience for a good hour’s train ride into the city) this hotel may not be your cup of tea. However, if you are travelling by car, and hope to avoid the high prices and lack of availability that come with stays in the center of the city, this may be the place for you. This hotel is a part of the Route Inn group, but is basically a level up from that. The lobby is fairly nice, but in the mode of a traditional Japanese Ryokan, you have to take your shoes off before going any further than the lobby. There are shoe lockers just around the corner, and the slippers they offer seemed to fit fine on my big western feet. They do have more traditional rooms (with tatami flooring) available, but we chose to stay in a western-style room. At the hotel restaurant, we had the course dinner, which was pretty good. My favorite course was the shabu-shabu, which is thinly sliced pork over vegetables. The other courses were good, but not outstanding. One plus about the hotel’s location is that there does seem to be a fair amount of restaurants on the street, within easy walking distance of the hotel. So there is no absolute need to eat dinner at the hotel restaurant. The room was nice, and about as big as most Japanese hotel rooms. It had a fridge, and a place to hang coats and such, but no closet. The unit bathroom was adequate, but be aware the ceiling is a bit low (not uncommon in Japan). The “night lights” were more like reading lights on the headboard of the bed. They were a little too bright to actually be used as nightlights, and I did not find any sort of dimmer switch for them. However, the desk lamp could be dimmed, which worked out. The beds were comfortable, but we only had 2 pillows despite making reservations as a family of 4, and had to ask the front desk for more. There was a humidifier in the room, which was nice, as I have been in a number of hotels in the past where overly dry air makes it almost impossible to sleep. We made use of the onsen (Japanese style baths) on the first floor. This one did have small lockers for your valuables, which was convenient. It appeared to be clean and was not overly crowded. I did not get a chance to use the outdoor bath, but the indoor one was nice. My favorite part of the stay was the breakfast buffet. Dinner, of course, can always be eaten elsewhere. But breakfast is most convenient before you ever have to leave the building. So a good breakfast buffet is always a big plus. They had both Japanese and Western-style fare, and a good selection of both. When we checked out one of the staff members offered to help us carry our bags to the car, and told us the best route to drive to the center of Nara. Overall I was happy with our stay. At the end of a long day of hitting the sites, it was nice to come to a place where you could relax and enjoy the evening meal, bath and breakfast and not have to leave the premises.
