KwaZulu-Natal (/kwɑːˌzuːluː nəˈtɑːl/; also referred to as KZN and known as "the garden province") is a province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged. It is located in the southeast of the country, enjoying a long shoreline beside the Indian Ocean and sharing borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg and its largest city is Durban. It is the 2nd most populous province in South Africa, with slightly fewer residents than Gauteng.

We had such an amazing time in the gardens! This must be South Africans most beautiful Open Garden! It’s very well kept with the most magnificent trees and plants! Take your own picnic and water as there is no eating facility anywhere around, but so well worth it!! Bathroom facility is very clean! Best kept secret in the Midlands!

I have visited Durban many times and I always head for the botanic gardens as it is the most beautiful place in Durban. There are always an abundance of flowers and the bird life there is amazing especially around the small lake, and of course there are the monkeys! This garden is a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours away from busy Durban and it is free!!

KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden

Experience nature’s grandeur at the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden in Pietermaritzburg. This garden’s Victorian past is evident in its magnificent specimens of northern hemisphere plants. One of the most spectacular features is the majestic avenue of London Plane Trees.

The botanical gardens in Pietermaritzburg remains a consistently well maintained facility. It was an ideal spot to have a family get together, with a multitude of spots in which to set up a large picnic. The grounds are immaculate and the occasional appearance of a wedding party busy with a photo shoot adds a nice vibe as well. It's a real asset to the city, especially considering the limited options available to young families.

Took a drive to japaneese garden for the Lil one to get some out door experience.the park was so clean and new benches had been installed. They were doing up the wedding hall area. Quite place to chill relax and enjoy with family. My Lil 1 loved it. We sat near the pond had our lunch. Took some photos with our baba. Day we'll spent. Sometimes you just need that peace and quiet during all that holiday rush.
