I decided to treat myself to a "Professional Game Drive / Safari" I met this company 5 years ago the very first time I went on a proper game drive in Kruger, that was great !
5 years later, even more impressive,. really,,, wow do they have it together. I lucked out and joined 2 couples from the Netherlands.
I have 2 cameras and was able to sit in the middle row to myself which was heaven as a photographer. We started with a perfect cool clear sky morning, 18 degrees, beautiful light and cool fresh air made for an exhilarating start, the park was not that busy so also nice. 10 minutes into the safari our guide Willem our licensed guide with 20 years experience, spotted a Honey Badger moving quickly, ran right in front of us ! I got couple great shots of it going about 25km,
onward,, only another 10 minutes again lucky a pregnant cheetah was walking on the road in open view, she quickly moved to the bush, we were only 30 meters from her at one point, Willem thought she might be ready to give birth as she was heavily laden, 10 seconds later she laid down next to a bush in beautiful grassy area with yellow & white flowers popping everywhere. Her coat combined with the surroundings would make her invisible but we watched her lay and somewhat disappear into the deep grass. 20 minutes later with lots of vehicles gathering it was doubtful she would do it then so we moved on.
Starting to warm up now about 24 degrees but clouds moving in,,, only a few minutes saw some cool yellow weavers making a nest, song birds singing, bliss, then only 5 minutes futher we spotted 3 stunning Rhinos not all that far away, maybe 75 meters, the female kept rubbing on a fairly small termite mound, Willem quick to explain that she was scenting, she did her thing for 4 or 5 minutes, then one of the males was prompt to check that out and put his stamp of approval on it, just magic seeing this with good light, again good pics. Hard to leave but we all agreed to move on,
20 minutes later we border the Sabie River, quite far away spotted a large hippo out of the water, life is getting better and better, nice breeze, the scenery of the river with the hippo was rewarding, 3 minutes up the road sighted Elephants approaching the far size of the river approx 700 meters away, they just kept coming to a point at least 50 of them, they played in the river and slowly crossed only to end up crossing the main road H4 right in front of us ! 30 minutes goes by as if we were in a perfect movie on National Geo, lots of trumpeting from the lead Matriarch who had very curly large tusks. At one point only 25 meters away, good photos opps
Feeling like we saw so much in a short time it was ideal for a nice stop at Lower Sabie Camp for breakie, 5 minutes up the road. They had prepared a nice pre packaged yummy meal for us, we sat at a picnic table, enjoyed the sabie river views and recapped the morning for about 30 minutes while seeing hippos and a few waterbuks in the background. Willem our guide stayed back at the vehicle as he wanted to talk to other guides to see what they all were seeing and where we would go next.
Off we go again, only 5 minutes into the drive we had a lovely interaction with about 10 elephants, they were eating, slowly getting closer and closer without really noticing us, at one point less than 5 meters away ! Almost saying hi how are you, we approve. A tiny baby was in the mix, wonderful to see how they always guard the little one.
Next on the list was a powerful song bird, the song was so loud we thought it wasn't real only to finally spot the gem of a bird a korhaan, unreal how loud the song was, guessing this one was courting any nearby mates, surely they could not miss as the song would carry for at least a km. Nearby was a hyena likely trying to see what the noise was about
Next on the list is an adolescent Jakal, followed by a few buffalo laying in some shallow water cooling off as it was getting warmer at about 32 degrees.
Next up the road was what we all wanted ! A lioness laying under a thicket patiently putting in some time, she did the classic yawn which I was able to get a few nice shots. When she did that Willem commented that she would likely get up and move. 10 seconds later up she got and wandered over to another thicket ! We could see there was another lion but could not make out clearly what it was. Blessed to have had a clear view of her and a few minutes was just exhilarating and satisfying.
Back to Sabie camp for lunch only to find out the power was off and restaurant closed, oh well we grabbed some sandwiches and cold bevies and group decided to just keep going, nothing our guide could do about the power.
Off we go only to spot 3 more Rhino's ! gee this is our lucky day with Rhinos. We went to a beautiful view point where there was a dam usually dry was full of water on both sides, fantastic Panorama views of hills, elliies, rhinos, zeebra, wildebeest and Giraffe off in the distance. Great photo op for all, lots of people were enjoying this view point, clean bathrooms, Willem knew the manager, we were able to purchase some cold drinks which was nice. Its time to head back sadly, but happy campers we just kicked back and took in the lovely views, about half way back another Rhino sighting ! 3 more, how lucky are we ! 12 Rhino's for the day, oddly 4 groups of 3
One of the gals in the group mentioned that we had not seen all that many giraffe, 3 minutes later we came across a mom and her little one along with a group of several, wow life could not be better. The little one was licking the mom, awwww,,,,,,
Nearing the gate we saw lots of Impala, more warthogs, zebra and a kudu.
To summarize our day could not think it could be any better !!
Willem worked very hard to please us, constantly communicating with other guides and very good at spotting things we did not notice. It was like a day from heaven, thanks very much to Willem and Kruger Africa Safaris. Job Well done ! Thanks to the 2 couples from Netherlands for being so much fun and good spotters.
Happy & Safe Travels to all !

We were lucky enough to do two whole day Safaris with Chase. He was such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide and is clearly known for his ability to find the animals amongst the other park guides. He amazingly knew about every bird and small creature as well as the larger better known animals. He was patient and related brilliantly with our daughters (8 and 10) and nothing was too much trouble. He gave us two days we will never forget - we are so grateful we had Chase showing us through the park giving us a wonderful South African Bush Safari.
Can not recommend highly enough.

It was our second consecutive year in Balule Nature Reserve. We stayed in Monêpênêpê Bush Camp in Struwig Eco Reserve. Our hosts were Johan and Piet, two accomplished field guides of Bundu Enterprises. The essence of this bush camp is to experience nature on foot. The services they provide are daily walks in the veld, sharing their expert knowledge, short game drives, sundowners combined with a night drive. On the last day they accompanied us on a boat cruise on the Olifants River, which is excellent for game viewing and bird watching. The camp is rustic, accommodation is in tents, with basic ablution facilities and bucket showers(with warm water !). All meals, drinks and snacks are included. Be assured of great food prepared on gas and on the fire at night. Sit back with a glass in your hand and relax with the sounds of the African bush all around. Johan and Piet are a great team and won't disappoint you.
