Minas Gerais (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈminɐz ʒeˈɾajs]) is a state in the north of Southeastern Brazil. This is a great, if underpublicized place to experience wildlife if you have already done some of the more classic places in Brazil like the Pantanal or the Amazon. It is famous for birdlife, and it has lots of birds of many different kinds (parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, trogons, hawks, and many others), but we also saw mammals (Giant Anteater is practically guaranteed - we saw them every day, Maned wolf is much harder but possible, Pampas Deer, skunks, fox), reptiles (venomous snakes, lizards), and butterflies and other interesting insects. We hired Mariana Vabo as our guide and she was amazing - really helped us find wildlife and could identify everything.
