The 6 best Japanese guest houses in Hakone-machi, Japan

May 9, 2023 Franklyn Hardiman

Nestled in the mountains, Hakone's trains, trails, and gondolas showcase the breathtaking vistas of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, including close views of Mt. Fuji. The sulfurous steam from the region's volcanic activity fuels natural hot springs, the centerpieces of the many spas and resorts.

Onsen Guesthouse Hakone Tent

Very nice place and very kind staff

Reviewed By vicentejoseb966

Very nice and conveniently located place to visit around Hakone area (next to one of the train stations). Amazing staff: very helpful and really friendly; always giving tips and interesting talks! The value for money is undebatable! Nice onsen on the premises and japanese style comfortable rooms . Really good offer for dinner (pizzas are amazing); you can also use a small kitchen & a fridge for breakfast/lunch. I would recommend this place with no hesitation: it is the perfect guesthouse.

Beautiful Japanese/Western Accomodation

We stayed in the upstairs family apartment. Such a beautiful place to spend a night, clean and well kept. The tatami area with futon beds was a lovely cultural experience. The apartment also has a modern kitchenette and bathroom. The apartment is located on the “main”road but this is a small 2 lane street. We drove ourselves so found the idea of a main road confusing (as they were narrow mountain passes). Follow the YouTube instructions to the paring area for the apartment as there’s no parking on the street. Found having a rental car ideal in this area. Google maps led us right to the door so our pocket wifi from the airport was invaluable. Definitely recommended!

We stayed here for one night and the place was just spotless. The staff was very friendly and calm. He gave us tips around the place and had very good English so we were delighted to chat. The view from the roof deck is fab too. They also have a poo table and a table tennis set. Highly recommended.

Asante Inn

Amazing Customer Service and Close to Everything!

Reviewed By leINDIA

I stayed here one night with my sister. We arrived extremely early in the morning as we only had one night and day to see all of Hakone. The owner was extremely helpful throughout the process. We took a train from Tokyo to Odawara and then a 40 minute local bus to Asante Inn. For future travelers, take the bus stop from bus area #4. Please make sure your Suica/Pasamo cards have enough fare to get you to Asante/Hakone. I believe the trip was around 1,000 yen. The bus does not give out change; if you do not have a IC card, please bring exact change. The bus ride was smooth. From the bus stop its a 6 minute walk to Asante. We left our luggage at the hotel as it was too early to check-in and made our way to sight-see. Asante's location is perfect as you can walk from the hotel to the Hakone Open Air Museum and Gora; or take the bus to Ashi Lake. Our train was for 6am the next morning since we were in Japan during New Years and all other trains were sold out. There are no buses or trains to take us back to Odawara. The owner was kind enough to arrange a taxi for us at 5am. He definitely went above and beyond to make sure we had the opportunity to make our train. The onsen at the hostel is great, the facilities are clean, and the food is delicious. I highly recommend staying at Asante Inn if you have a chance!
