O Convento De Nossa Senhora Do Monte Do Carmo

Reviewed By Andrew R

We had limited time in Vitoria and I'm very glad we chose the Convento de Nossa Senhora as one of the places we visited. We chose to drive to the parking area at the top near the church which made it very convenient. Our visit was particularly special because there was a service happening when we arrived. The chapel is simple but elegant. The kids had a great time exploring the grounds around the church. This was a great family activity...and it was free.

Some reviews here mix up the "Convento da Penha" with the Mosteiro Zen. This Mosteiro zen is a real and present zen monastery, subject to visits only on Sundays and pre-booked. It is located about one and a half hour drive from the Capital city os the State of Espírito Santo, Vitória. And indeed pays the visit! It is a beautiful area, all planted, gardened and preserved by the monks, whose leader is DAIJU, a Brazilian who was born in this region, who spent ten years in Japan, and founded this place.

Metropolitana Cathedral

Although this site has housed a church for centuries this one was built in the 20thc. I was surprised as the exterior of this church looks much older.
The wedding cake exterior of the church against some of the ugly buildings surrounding it, make you wonder what the area once looked like. The interior, though simple, is very stylish. The art deco lamps against the white and grey interior paintwork are actually very chic and although it might disappoint traditionalist, I was quite impressed by its simplicity. There are some intricate stained glass windows and three modern windows which I assume were part of its recent renovations.
All the historical buildings in central Vitoria have signs outside them giving you historical information which I found useful. Another little gem in Vitoria.

This a a nice visitor center and natural park of 33 hectares in what is a devastated industrial area which is still a busy port dealing with iron ore, petroleum products. You can also take a very interesting tour of the port.
Vale is a gigantic minerals company and this is one of a number of projects they take to try to earn a better reputation for being kind to the earth.

Palacio Anchieta

Historic patrimony and government house of Espírito Santo, the Anchieta Palace is a jesuit building, wich was erected between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Originaly, the building functined as a church, named Santiago's Church, and as a school, serving to the religious interests until their expulsion in 1759. Passed many modifocation proccesses in the following centuries, the building still as a house of the government, functioning as a cultural place too, where are recepted several itinerant Exhibitions, visits in its permanent collection and, specially at saturdays and sundays, visits in the governor's cabinet, passing through old residential wing.

When you see this building you must wonder what other beautiful buildings in Vitoria have been destroyed in the name of modernisation. This is a gem amongst the traffic and fumes of the city. I have only ever seen it from the outside but this year I managed to view inside. There isnt that much left of the orginal interior and that which has been preserved is not for viewing. Of interest is the original foundations and walls of part of the building Several buildings surrounding the area have been renovated but the remaining ugly buildings and graffiti are constant reminders of the battle between beauty and the lack of appreciation for it.

By european standards this is just a standard park in a nice neighbourhood. However having visited many areas in Brazil its nice to see a park which is frequently used by local schools to fly kites, joggers and couples walking. It feels safe as there are quite a few park staff working, its clean, it has a small pond with ducks with a shaded bench to watch them from. The onion shaped stone is interesting especially when the low flying aircraft fly over it to land at the nearby airport. Its not the sort of place you would travel miles to visit but if you are staying close its a little oasis amongst the noise and heat of Vitoria

One of the best views of the city (you can also see Serra and Vila Velha), it's a really safe and easy place to access. From there, you can see the Beaches, the Convento da Penha (Espírito Santo's most important tourist point), Pedra dos Olhos and Mestre Álvaro. It's awesome!

Canto Beach

A lovely beach with good sports facilities in an upmarket neighbourhood. Alongside the beach there are cycle paths where you can hire bikes and skates and join in with the thousands of others showing off their beautiful bodies and cute dogs. Its a pleasant place to visit in the early evening when its a little cooler and suddenly everyone is out walking, cycling, skateboarding. An interesting place to people watch, from young couples holding hands to whole families out for a stroll. Some nice places to have a drink or nibbles, overlooking the ocean.
