Rotunda of Mosta

Completed in 1860, this church has the third-largest unsupported dome in Europe.

Reviewed By DeryckWheeler - Ramsgate, United Kingdom

No visit to Malta is complete without visiting the Rotunda of Mosta. Unusual in that the Church is circular, with a massive domed ceiling - the third largest in the world. Even more spectacular in that the Dome was built without the aid of scaffolding! Don't forget to visit the annex at the back of the church to see a replica of the Bomb which fell through the Dome in 1942 in the middle of a service but which fortunately failed to explode.

I enjoyed three afternoon sessions with Shane whilst my husband and elder son completed Scuba training. From first contact, Shane was really efficient with emails and making sure that we had a good set of arrangements in hand. At the last minute, change of plan - my 13 year old son joined us, and Shane was very accommodating and helpful in this respect.
Prompt - even early - pick ups directly from our hotel, and then we were whisked off to various view points/ locations. It was really nice to be shown around so that we could make the best use of our time in Malta. Lots of photo stops, suggestions re: good composition, use of histograms and general advice. Over the three sessions visits included Dingli Cliffs, Three Cities, Gnejna Bay and Marsaxlokk.
During our last session, a different bias, we talked about the more technical side of work flow with photography today, quick insight into LIghtroom, and suggestions/ hints/ tips re: how to take my photography up to the next level. Finishing with some constructive criticism on some of my current shots which was helpful. It was great fun to go around with a professional and catch an insight into aspects of his work, interesting in itself.
All in all, Shane was pleasant company and a patient teacher, but there is still so much to learn - but the only way to learn is by "doing"! If you have an interest in Photography, let Shane show you beautiful Malta; and take some of it home with you in a photograph!

Bidnija Horse Riding

WELCOME! Horse Riding is enjoyed by everyone and is an excellent way to relax and exercise while having fun and experience what it was like when life was simple! We bring you the best unspoiled countryside in Malta where you will be taken around on our well trained horses, accompanied always by one or two qualified instructors.

Reviewed By MalteseHoneymooner - Malta

It is a one hour horse ride in the countryside. If you are afraid or never been on a horse, they provide a person who can walk alongside you. The kids were really taken care of, they had a person with them all the way.
What I think needs to be improved is that they didnt give us time to take a photo of the kids on the horses, since as soon as we arrived back, there were other people booked for another ride so we had to quickly go down from the horses. And there was no time before either.
But it was a lovely experience, especially for us who had never been on a horse before.

Ta’ Bistra Catacombs

Located half way between the ancient town of Melite and the once-important harbour of Salina, the Ta’ Bistra Catacombs are, so far, the largest set of tombs and Catacombs accessible beyond the confines of the ancient city of the Island. They were first recorded in the late 1800s but were only investigated in 1933 by Captain Charles Zammit before part of the site was covered over by a new road leading down to Burmarrad.

Reviewed By John T - Basingstoke, United Kingdom

The site is a network of Catacombs with individual entrances cut into the face of a northward-facing ridge. It consists of sixteen groups of chambers tunnelled next to each other, some with decorated borders, shelves for pots, pilasters & tables. Unlike the Catacombs in Rabat which were dug underground, these were cut by means of tunnelling into the face of the ridge.
A remarkable feature of Maltese Catacombs is the mixture of religious rites, including Christian, pagan and Judaic, all within the same locality. A reflection of the co-existence of these different cultures in late Roman Times.
Heritage Malta have done much to make the site accessible with a lift and covered walkway. Unfortunately, they have provided no useful signposts on the main road from the Rotunda (Triq Il-Kostituzzjoni) to the site or at the roundabout less than 100 metres from the entrance. The nearest bus stop from the centre of town is Targa. Carry on walking up the hill to the roundabout and take the main road to the left. The entrance is at the side of the small car park on the left.
We only discovered the site because we arrived in Mosta to find the Rotunda closed until 15:00. Having heard there were Catacombs somewhere around, we looked at the tourist information map in the Piazza outside the Rotunda. It wasn't particularly clear, so we asked at the Police Station next door and were given comprehensive directions.

Charles Abela Memorial Stadium

Reviewed By Matt B - Greater London, United Kingdom

Attended a double header game here during my trip to Malta. Astonishing that it didn't have a TripAdvisor page, so I did the honours myself.
For two games of top flight (albeit preseason friendly) football the admission price was €2.50. Incredible given the price of football in the UK where you're looking at £40 minimum for a game. Even in England's non league you'd pay between £5 - £15 depending on who you're watching.
The locals were very welcoming, and prices in the club house were just as reasonable. The atmosphere was great, with four sets of fans mixing well.
The stadium itself is very modern, making use of a 3G pitch. I think this is because it holds almost all games in the lower leagues of the Maltese game. There is one small stand that runs the full length of the pitch of a few rows of seats. Standing is permitted in the area behind the Seating. The aforementioned club house is quite small, but has a good selection of ice cold drinks and snacks. Although they weren't open, there was a bar at each end of the ground according to the signs.
Most buses travel through Mosta, and the walk from the Rotunda was quite pleasant. The nearest bus stop however is less than a minute walk - serving Valletta and most tourist destinations.
If you're a football lover, check the fixtures and catch a game or two if you're lucky. If it doubt, check the club Facebook or Twitter feed or drop them an email.
