Visited this restaurant in the new year. Although the food is good the restaurant was freezing! The air conditioning was Broken, on the coldest setting and it was January. I was like North of the wall in GOT. Too tip don’t sit anywhere near the door to the restaurant, it’s always open as people are in and out. Unless you like eating outside.

Had a nice evening in Coal tonight. Couldnt fault the service but the food wasn't impressive. My haddock fish cake was so overcooked it had a very thick hard crust. Others had beef brisket in a BBQ plate and said it wasnt up to much. One had a burger and it was just ok and the other had 2 firesticks and seemed to enjoy them. The worst thing was paying £33 for a bottle of Prosecco! Where do these prices come from.

We finally found this place after a couple of false starts and enjoyed our lunch. We started with the baked cheese which tasted a bit strongly of ammonia but was served with plenty of bread. The size of the steak Sandwich was a little small but the same was not true of the duck sausages or salmon dishes both of which were very generous. The fish was borderline overcooked but not too bad. Service was friendly and attentive.

The Crown at Old Basing

This is our local pub/ restaurant and we have visited many many times over the years. It has been through many transitions and this is one of the worst. The service ( one lad completely overwhelmed) was truly dreadful particularly as one of the new owners/manager spent the entire evening drinking at the bar and not helping at all. The food once we got it was ok but elements forgotten and then we were dramatically over charged. If it continues like this they will lose all their local customers which they desperately need. Really disappointing.

The Sun Inn

The Sun Inn, situated in Dummer, South of Basingstoke, awarded 2 AA Rosette and Michelin Guide BIB Gourmand 2017 continues to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Head Chef Gordon Stott. Still only 25, Gordon is one of the youngest chefs in the country to run his own pub after taking over as Landlord and Head Chef in February 2012, where he is ably supported by a similarly young but experienced team. All produce is locally sourced, and food cooked fresh on the premises to order.Drinkers are catered for with a wide variety of high-quality ales, many of which are supplied by the local Triple fff Brewery.

The restaurant here is nice and small so it’s rarely too noisy. The homemade butter & chocolates are superb! All the food is delicious and well cooked with some nice, inventive veggie options. The staff are friendly. It’s a very nice place to go for a special meal although you often need to book in advance.

The Bolton Arms

Originally built as a farmhouse circa 1490, this Grade II Listed building was extended during 1550, 1650 and latterly 1720, as shown below. The sympathetic renovation of 2008 uncovered a wealth of period features such as vaulted ceilings, oak beams and central brick fireplace, all of which have added to the intimate ambience of the three clearly defined areas : Roschild’s Restaurant (fine dining); The InnBetween (snacks and nibbles); The Village Bar (quality wines and beers). In addition, there is an attractive landscaped Beer Garden at the rear of the property For the historians, Old Basing was the site for the longest siege of Oliver Cromwell’s reign where Roundhead met Cavalier during the 23 month siege of Basing House which ended in November 1645. A large proportion of the ruins were used to build the houses in The Street with musket ball damage still being visible. The site of Basing House is open to the public for most of the yearThe InnBetween at the Bolton Arms was built from the bricks of Basing House and is renowned for sitings of “The Cavalier” ghost that has been seen on many occasions. It is rumoured that upon his arrival in Old Basing Cromwell beheaded one of his generals in the original part of the building as “encouragement” to others !Following Oliver and Richard Cromwell’s Protectorate period the House of Stuart was restored to the throne in 1660 when the lands of Basing were returned to the Paulet family. A “Dukedom” was specifically created and bestowed upon Charles Paulet as a show of gratitude for his loyalty to the Crown. Charles Paulet became the first Duke of Bolton, hence the name of the pub. Charles Paulet was later elevated to the position of Lord Bolton by a simple clerical error when called upon to address the House of LordsThe InnBetween was the original Dame School for the area prior to the education system being established. Between 1720 to 1740 two spinster sisters offered rudimentary lessons to local youngsters between 8 am to noon for a penny a week - prior to the boys going to work in the fields and the girls commencing house chores. In the evening the schoolhouse became the local hostelry Conveniently situated in the quiet and picturesque Conservation Area of Old Basing, the Bolton Arms is less than two miles from Basingstoke town centre. The village is surrounded by beautiful Hampshire countryside of open fields and riverside walks and is next to the cricket green, archery and bowling club, tennis courts and children’s recreation ground. If these pursuits appear too energetic, however, you can relax while spotting the many species of wildlife and birds that are found in the area ?

A group of 18 of us booked the Bolton Arms in Old Basing for the 4th time this year for our Christmas get together. We were given a separate room where our (sometimes rowdy!) crowd could laugh and catch up with each other without disturbing other diners. It was great. The food and service were excellent and friendly, as always. We have never had a bad meal at this restaurant. Highly recommended!

The Fox Inn

The Fox is an attractive Fullers pub on the edge of the village of Oakley near Basingstoke. It has lovely views across the Hampshire countryside. There is a large car park and a HUGE family garden with childrens' climbing frame, swings and slides as well as a separate garden area. There are 4 areas in the pub - The Den, which is mainly used for dining, the main bar, the pool/games room and the function room. We have a skittle alley, a pool table and various board games/cards available. We also have a 130ft well inside the pub!! We serve a mixture of Caribbean and European food, which is very reasonably priced, Fullers real ales (London Pride, HSB and a seasonal ale) an extensive wine list and full bar. Our large function room, with direct access to the garden is used regularly for parties, wedding receptions, wakes, business meetings and skittles evenings. We have regular events including live music, a monthly Caribbean buffet, a monthly Thai buffet, a music quiz, Family Fun Days and Fox Cubs, our weekly Wednesday morning stay 'n play group for pre-schoolers. There's always something going on at The Fox and you can be sure of a warm welcome from Buddy, Kate and the team!

I recently booked the Fox for a skittles evening. This was such a fun way to get together with a group of friends. The finger buffet was excellent and special dietary requirements were well catered for. Service and staff attention was also excellent. From my initial contact with Kate to the evening itself there was nothing at all to fault and I highly recommend this place for a good evening of fun.
Thank you so much to all at the Fox; you were all wonderful. Thank you.
