Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama

Reviewed By Ken-from-Tokyo

Furari is one of the most popular road station among the 8 stations in Minami-Boso City and more than 500,000 people visit this place yearly in the recent years. In fact, 8 is the largest number of road stations in one city in Japan.
“Furari” is unique that it could be accessed by both the highway and the local road. On the first floor, they sell local fish and vegetables whereas on the second floor there are restaurants and a food corner as well as the tourist information office. The restaurant “Aminaya” is one of the most popular restaurants in that area which mainly serves fresh fish and sushi.
A good stop-by before you head back for Tokyo

Oki no Shima

Reviewed By FirstVillage - Tokyo, Japan

Oki no Shima is a small tied island in the city of Tateyama, south of the Boso Peninsula. Linked to the Mainland by a tambolo, it attracts many locals specially on weekends, who enjoy activities such as fishing, catching clams, swimming and snorkeling. Accessible by road, the island has a small forest with walking paths, public toilet and a small, old shrine. Good place for a walk on a sunny day, while enjoying the sea breeze.

We took the cable car up the mountain top and did not really expect to hike so far to see the Buddha. After about 20 mins hike to see the first statute and to the viewing point, we decided to take the hundreds steps to the Buddha. It was worth it although it was really hot.

Nokogiri Mountain Nihon Temple

Reviewed By m-town2185 - Maastricht, The Netherlands

Lovely day trip you can do from Tokyo. You can go by train. (from Tokyo to Chiba and then take the train to Hama-Kanaya station (cost around 2000 yen one way per person from Tokyo and 2,5 hours) and about 15 min walk from the station to the cable cart. Signs in English.
Or you can go by ferry (same price but the ferry does not go that often.
Normally when you are in Japan and you go to a nice place you see a lot of tourists, but in this place it's really quite. You don't have to wait before getting in the cable cart (return 1320 yen) and the cable cart goes every 15 min.
once you get up there you have to climb a lot of stairs to get to all the budda's (there are in a different section and cost 600 yen to get in, but its really worth the money)
You will spend around 2,5 hours up there ( at least we did) so you have plenty of time to do this on 1 day from Tokyo.

Awa Jinja

Reviewed By ShotoHachiya

I came here on Saturday noon. There aren't much people, which make the place silent harmonically with a lot of trees. This shrine is surrounded by Mountains, so you can feel good Japanese nature while you stay here. There is a small cave and pond, and they make the atmosphere very holy and ancient. I recommend this place if you wanna feel calm and relaxed.

Mt. Nokogiri Ropeway

Reviewed By wanderlust_rambler - Sydney, Australia

The ropeway station is located about a 10 minute walk from Hamakanaya Station (head out of the station and go straight until you see the main road by the water, turn left and walk until you see the large ropeway billboard and bear left).
The fee is 500 yen for a single trip up (or down) or 930 yen return. As I hadn't at the time considered returning from Nokogiri to Hota station by foot, I purchased a round trip ticket. Next time, I would purchase a single trip and start or finish with the ropeway.
The cable cars operate every 10 minutes and there was a reasonable number of commuters on a Saturday (you may have to wait for the next car). As each car can fit about 30 people, you may not get the best view on the ropeway which is a shame because it is magnificent. Each trip up or down takes about 5 minutes.

Tateyama Castle (City Museum Branch)

Reviewed By YokohamaDancer - Yokohama, Japan

Had a nice walk up the hill to Tateyama castle with the family. It was a nice park and probably would have been really pretty a couple of weeks earlier before the azaleas started withering. The castle itself is a small hilltop style castle, but don't expect historical accuracy, as the original 1580 castle was demolished in 1614, and no one saved the plans for the eventual rebuild by the city in 1982' so they modeled it after Inuyama Castle in Aiichi.
