Where to Eat in Yokohama: The Best Restaurants and Bars

August 8, 2017 Kandra Bartel

Yokohama is easily accessible from Tokyo, but there’s enough to see and do here that it’s worth more than a day trip. Visit Minato Marai 21, a popular, modern neighborhood with great shopping and tons of restaurant options. TripAdvisor travelers also recommend stopping at Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier), a uniquely shaped pier with spectacular views.

THE GOOD:
great katsu
great friendly service
lovely atmosphere
THE NOT SO GOOD:
nothing
This place is a class above the rest. The menu is very simple, they thrive in what they do best and that is Katsu, all three of us had different dishes and we loved all of them. This place is not cheap but it is pure quality. I had the pork loin Katsu, the others had the Chicken katsu and the prawn katsu. We had the meal set, which comes with miso soup, rice and lettuce.
If you are looking for great Katsu, then this is a must visit place.

I have been to Sirius for lunch twice. The first time I went there was with my sister and mom to celebrate my mom's birthday. That time, we got a special mini hamburger and a shrimp dish each which I thought was a nice add-on to the pricey buffet. The waitress also came over and took our picture which was put inside a birthday card from the hotel for my mom. We were impressed with the friendly service that time.
This time, the dining experience was less enjoyable. The buffet was not replenished in a timely manner. Some of the dishes were sitting empty and nobody was replacing them. For about 4,000 yen per person, we expected better and prompter service. Also, the servers were hard to find. They were not friendly or helpful either. Overall, service seemed to have made a turn for the worse.
The food was at best, average. The only saving grace was the breathtaking view from the restaurant. I don't think I'll be coming back to Sirius.

130 years have passed since we opened our first restaurant. We are the oldest Chinese restaurant in all of Japan. More than 50 skillful chefs prepare authentic various Cantonese dishes. from casual dim-sum dishes to a banquet catering for 400 guests.

Food was good. The service was good. It was a long meal. We were expecting family style service. Instead each dish was served as separate course. They presented the dish, we smiled and said domo and they individually plated. It was nice service, just not what we were looking for as it was very long. While the food was good, I don't think it was 5 star good. Pork skin was a bit chewy, the tofu beef stew was ok. Peking duck was good.

A large dim sum restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. They are located over their own bakery, which was by far better than the offerings of their restaurant, The dim sum were ok . I sampled the xiao long bao and the shu mai were completely fine, I've had better and worse. The main dish, a sort of version of Yang Chow's Slippery shrimp (Fried shrimp in a spicy sweet tomato-y sauce was just not good at all--overcooked and over sweet. Staff seemed a little stand-offish, perhaps because it was obvious I did not speak Japanese. The menu had many photos and only about 40% translated into English (none of the dim sum).
After dinner I went downstairs and had a really nice bean-paste filled dessert

Nestled between Saikoh and Yokohama's best porridge restaurant (look for Santa outside) is a quiet family-run rival that is both reasonably priced and an incredibly warm atmosphere. The specialty spring roll is to die for, the squid over onions and garlic awesome, and my daughter was raving about the shrimp Chahan and panda nikuman. There was no line, the menus are in whatever language you need, and the hostess was incredibly informative about choice and recommendations. Free jasmine tea and anin Todu await at the end of your feast. Hard to be on this street and be so-so - and this was a very pleasant surprise and absolutely in the realm of its more famous neighbors.

Hungry Tiger Hodogaya

Reviewed By James N - Houston, Texas

After several nights eating traditional Japanese food, we decided to look for a steak house. The Concierge said that this was a very popular place and that everyone who went there were very happy.
The restaurant is located in Mores Store building on the 8th floor. The restaurant list showed 12 restaurants taking up two floors. As usual in Japan, each one was very upscale and looked like they had amazing food.
The Hungry Tiger basically serves steak grilled, in various forms: hamburgers, filet, t-bone, and a few other popular steak varieties. They also server American style ribs, which were very good, and, things like fries, salads and other types of sides. One interesting activity that I had never seen before, are these huge napkins that everyone gets. Because they serve the steaks on a hot platter, when they bring it to your table you hold the big napkin in front of you as they cut or dribble sauce onto the steak. Of course, the steak or whatever is sizzling and splattering, so the napkin protects your clothes. It was really interesting to see how comfortable and skilled the Japanese patrons were with this fun activity.
All of the food was excellent. One person with us ordered a steak that was supposedly a Japanese variety and did not like it, we ended up ordering a t-bone instead for him. It didn't come grilled on a hot platter, but served on a regular plate. I can't remember the name of it. Nonetheless, if you stick with the main meat items on the menu, you can't go wrong.
I would definitely go back there and highly recommend it to anyone in the vicinity. Also, the place gets crowded and they don't take Reservations, so be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes when you arrive; they have a ticket machine that the guy at the door gives you and notes the number in your party. It is worth the wait and there are a lot of interesting places around you to see while you wait.

I had dinner at this restaurant for gathering with my friends families. The restaurant is the second outlet of a famous Chinese porridge restaurant in Chinatown, Yokohama city. It is located at a narrow street, however there are long long queues every weekends. I visited the restaurant on Monday at 5 pm, it was not crowded. Then almost tables were fully occupied when I left the restaurant at 7pm.
I ordered a Chinese porridge and several Chinese dishes. The porridge was nice taste with rich Chinese soup stock. Chinese dishes were a bit oily and light taste. Only porridges were highly recommended.
