Ancient Messini

Reviewed By Rambling_Pete - Newton Abbot, United Kingdom

Sorry to say I'd not heard of Ancient Messini before visiting. How come it doesn't attract more attention from travel writers. This is an amazing archaeological site in a stunning setting. The locals told me that there is more to see than at Olympus and it has the benefit of being less crowded. Less crowded? Well there were about a dozen cars there when we visited in early September. Easy to get great images with few or no people in them. Unlike so many Greek sites the information boards are good (in Greek and English) and really enhance the visit. I can't recommend this site too highly for lovers of antiquities.

Proti Cruises

Take a mini-cruise with Proti Cruises! Swim, relax and explore Proti, a beautiful uninhabited island directly across the fishing village of Marathopoli, Messenia – just a mile away from the coast. Crystal clear turquoise water, an idyllic cove with pale sand, breathtaking sunsets, trekking to ancient ruins, a WWII shipwreck, old pirate engravings, the Cave of Seals... You may even spot a dolphin!

Proti island is a small island right across the harbor of Marathopoli. Small but very beautiful and virgin. Vourlia beach is also small but has some of the cleanest waters I have seen in Greece! Great experience to go snorkeling around the shipwreck, which is very close to the beach! The boat tour takes you also to a seal cave where you swim again in crystal blue waters! The captain is very polite and makes a good tour of the island!

Romanos Beach

Reviewed By JudithSandton - Johannesburg, South Africa

Really beautiful resort hotel with a very long beach, very clean, blue flag, crystal clear water, turtles if you are lucky. Excellent breakfast, fantastic staff, lots of activities should you wish, close to attractions if you feel like venturing further afield. Choice of many restaurants, pricey though. Alcoholic drinks very expensive we found. We had a room with an infinity pool which was stunning, just a bit too close to the swimming pool which was rather noisy as there are lots of kids! Our beach waiter Nestor, was wonderful and looked after us so well. We will be back!

One of the best Beaches in the world. Truly amazing and inspiring. Unique setting; perfect semicircle, great sand, crystal water, ancient history (ships from the Trojan war harbored there!), overlooked by a castle... Will never forget climbing to the castle and overlooking the beach from above.

Beautiful view. Wonderful feeling of bathing in cold water at 40 degrees heat. Very difficult to reach by car - only for very good drivers. The car must be in excellent condition engine and brakes.

Temple of Apollo Epikourios

An amazing temple site, as large as the Parthenon. Preserved under a vast tent to protect it. Its bold architecture is unique. Must be seen! Delicate columns, and striking internal design originality.

The castle is impressive, the views are fabulous, the town of Methoni is beautiful, spotlessly clean with lovely tree lined streets. Reasonable entrance fee of 2€ (1/2 for seniors). Nice taverna right on the corner opposite the parking lot for the castle.

Agia Theodora

This is just beautiful and amazing that the little church is still standing with all the trees, and the little stream is just lovely. We got lost trying to get there, we knew where we wanted to be but couldn't find the right road, but got there in the end and went to the first taverna that we came across. They didnt have any English menus so we had to go into the kitchen and point to chicken done in a tomato sauce and chips which were very good. If we had gone down the steps to the mill by the stream we would have found another taverna. It was a very good day.

We had a great afternoon out with Annika and crew one balmy September afternoon.
Annika also let us help out with a little with crewing at our request which was great fun, she is a very competent sailor with lots of experience and we felt totally relaxed in her hands.
Our only regret was that we couldn't go out for the whole day due to a last minute issue on our part. Annika was most accommodating and waited for us until we are able to get there.
I would highly recommend this day out whether you be a couple, a family or group of friends. This is a great way to explore the coastline and see this part of Greece from a different angle.
Thank you again Annika. Hopefully we will get to sail with you again next summer!
