Melk Abbey: XVIII Benedictine Abbey above the town of Melk. It offers spectacular views of the town and valley as well as an interesting guided tour of beautiful historic baroque interiors. If you have a chance, take the trip to the Abbey. It's only 1 hour away by train from Vienna. We purchased a Combo-ticket: train to Melk and Danube cruise, with a stop at Krems where you can take the train to Vienna. You have plenty of time to visit the Abbey and the pretty town of Melk; in addition the cruise sails along a stretch of the Danube that is very scenic. The last stop is Krems, another pretty town along the Danube. It's a one day excursion that one can undertake on his/her own.

You will pass many UNESCO world heritage sites. This wine producing region goes back to the Romans. A wonderful journey through time.

Schloss Hof

With a size of over 50 hectares, Austria's largest rural Palace complex is only an hour's drive from Vienna. As the country seat of Prince Eugene of Savoy and later Maria Theresa and Joseph II. Schloss Hof has seen many splendid celebrations and illustrious guests. Today, visitors can not only see the imperial living quarters in the bel Etage, but also attend numerous Events and activities for the whole Family that continue the opulent traditions of the past.

After a pleasant 1 hour drive from Vienna we arrived at this beautiful palace.
The exterior must have been recently renovated as it is in fantastic condition. The surrounding Gardens are carefully looked after with lush green lawns, neatly trimmed hedges, sparkling clean Fountains and tidy pathways. You can certainly see the gardening team takes pride in their work!!
There was an exhibition in the palace celebrating Empress Maria Theresa's 300th Birthday. While a lot of work had gone into this we found the numbering for the audio tour didn't match certain rooms and there was no definite start so other guests also got confused about where to go.
This aside - Schloss Hof is wonderfully preserved and well worth a visit to wonder around the Gardens and enjoy some cake at its little restaurant in the courtyard.

Roman City Carnuntum

The time of the Romans in Carnuntum is not in the long-ago past, which can be seen by a few remains of walls, but it is the present which can be experienced with all one's senses. Today you can saunter in the footsteps of Roman emperors who wrote world history 1700 years ago. Public baths which are heated all year round entice you in the reconstructed Roman city quarter, the Amphitheatre and the gladiator school take you back to the world of gladiators, and timeless treasures in the Museum Carnuntinum are witness to the former inhabitants' zest for life and culture.

It is easy to overlook Carnuntum unless you are within 10 miles of it and happen to spot a signpost. Although it is obviously new the reconstruction has been done to an extremely high standard, with some of the original artefacts on display inside and out. The reception area includes a souvenir shop and an interesting video.
Away from the main reconstruction is the Amphitheatre. I was surorised at just how small it was.
Further still is the museum, which is well worth a visit. Since we had visited the other two sites, and were now at the third, we were given a demonstration of coin striking and were able to strike coins ourselves. The museum is well organised, and bright, and the exhibits are described in three languages, German, English, and one which looked Czech or Hungarian.

We decided to go castle hunting as we had time to kill. Given the location off the motorway, it certainly did kill some time hunting it down. Followed by a trek (via car) up the mountain to reach it.
Arriving near closing time, we did not do the tour. But at least we have been in a castle over 1000 years old...

Castle Kuernriger (Schloß Kürnriger) is the main attraction of Durnstein (Dürnstein). It is the ruins of the castle in which Richard Leoncoeur, King of England was held prisoner for a year while returning from a Crusade. The ransom was used by the Duke of Babenberg to build the city walls of Vienna. This is a popular historical attraction especially for British people.

Stift Klosterneuburg

Just a few years after relocating their residence to Klosterneuburg, Margrave Leopold III and his wife, Agnes, founded the monastery near their castle as a religious, social and cultural center in 1114. They handed the monastery over to the Canons Regular of St. Augustine in 1133.

We were enroute from Salzburg to Vienna and stopped off at Klosterneuburg for a couple hours to visit the monastery & town. The Klosterneuburg Monastery is a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery of the Roman Catholic Church located in a hill overlooking the Danube river and town. The Monastery contains the Verduner Altar, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun. Its three parts comprise 45 gilded copper plates modeled on Byzantine paragons. The complex also contains a museum with a collection of Gothic and Baroque sculpture and a gallery of paintings. The paintings found in the abbey church have been well preserved and are impressive. It has been remodeled in the Baroque style in the seventeenth century and was my favourite part of the Monastery complex. If you are travelling through the area, Stift Klosterneuburg is a scenic and historical spot to spend a couple of hours. It has a quaint, picturesque setting with monastery overlooking the town.

Baden has done well to have such great Gardens.
The Doblhoff is a real delight.
Tree-lined paths a huge lake, Fountains, rosarium and an Orangerie means there is something for everyone.
There is also a huge kiddy play area.
A delight was seeing a mother duck with her offspring powering their way around the lake.
The lake and ponds are full of fish and quirky furniture decorations.
There is boat hire on the lake as well as a kiosk and cafe.
A great visual feast.
Don't forget to smell the roses.
