Top 10 restaurants in Salzburg, Austria

November 19, 2017 Roseanne Arnett

It’s been 200 years or so since he lived here, but Mozart is still very much Salzburg’s favorite son. Visit the composer’s residence and birthplace, then explore the Altstadt (Old City), taking in the baroque architecture. If your musical tastes run more "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens" than "Requiem in D Minor," catch one of the many Sound of Music tours and follow in the footsteps of the Von Trapps.

Barenwirt

The Bärenwirt, located in the historic district Mülln, is one of the oldest inns in Salzburg. Hospitality plays an important role since 1663 and the traditional inn is run with a lot of personal commitment. At the Bärenwirt you enjoy traditional Austrian specialities and beer of the Augustiner Bräu, the oldest brewery of Salzburg. We recommend our fried chicken, which is known as the best one of Austria. The sunny Terrace with view onto the river Salzach and the Kapuzinerberg, one of the two hills in the center of Salzburg, and the cozy guest rooms invite you to spend a relaxing and pleasurably time at the Bärenwirt. If you are planning a festivity with your family and friends the Bärenwirt provides the right offer. The package is called “Feiere dein Fest” and includes roast pork with dumpling and „sauerkraut“ and beer, which is drawn by yourself.

This is a wonderful traditional Austrian restaurant with quite a long history. It is really gemütlich, super atmosphere, friendly staff and great surroundings. The portions are enormous but excellent, they have wonderful beer too from the Augustinerbräu, very reasonably priced another favourite of ours.

I liked the ambience and the service. Our steward Mr. Rajeev provided explanations of the food before each course, I found this to be a great supplement to the food. My vegetarian food was superb. I had tortellini as my main course. Toilets were clean too. Also, as expected, no TV to be found in the room. I can’t stand restaurants with TV. The dining room also had a huge painting as decoration, if you into stuff like that. I would recommend this to everyone who wants to enjoy a great dinner with family or friends.

We love Indian food and chose this restaurant based on the reviews. The ambiance is indeed quite spectacular but the food did not live up to our expectations. The dal was too salty for our taste and my chicken vindaloo was quite bland although the boned thigh meat was tender and well prepared. Stephanie had one of the lamb curry dishes. Lamb is difficult to get right and the lamb was indeed very tender but the sauce didn’t really do justice to the meat. This might have all been forgivable except our glasses of Prosecco were flat and not particularly good. The menu lists a number of Prosecco cocktails. One wonders if they disguise a not very good quality wine. If you love curry go to the Bella Vita a few minutes walk away instead. It’s much better.

We welcome you to the historic Ceconi-Villa in Salzburg-Nonntal, only a short distance from the hustle and bustle of the City centre. The restaurant is located inside a grotto of Moenchsberg. Great ambience, courteous and attentive service. The food and the wine tasted excellent but given the extremely high price tag I expected more in terms of preparation and culinary ideas. We started with the steak tartare and the Alpensaibling. Both dishes were ok but nothing to rave about it. As entree we opted for deer and the Chateaubriand. The deer was excellent, the Chateaubriand was grilled as requested but was more on the small side. Overall good food but unfortunately grossly overpriced, therefore only 4 out of 5.

Restaurant Ikarus

Restaurant Ikarus: A landing pad for top chefs A different top chef each month. It doesn‘t matter which continent or country they come from, whether it‘s the USA, South Africa or Japan. Or whether they serve traditional, fusion or molecular cuisine. What matters most is the variety. And, of course, the high quality of the dishes. Following its opening in 2003, Restaurant Ikarus launched one of the most ambitious projects in the world of international haute cuisine: the guest chef concept. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Martin Klein and patron Eckart Witzigmann, this concept sees the most creative and successful chefs in the world invited to Salzburg each month. Surrounded by the special glass architecture of Hangar-7 and the historic aeroplanes of the Flying Bulls, the concept is a unique experience for the senses.

The restaurant is called quite simply “esszimmer” (“dining room”). Anything more would be superfluous, says star chef Andreas Kaiblinger. After all, the “real adventure happens in the cooking pot.”

This restaurant was quite close to our B&B on a recent stay in Salzburg. We enjoyed it so much we ate there twice! This was definitely not a tourist place since we seemed to be the only non-locals on both visits. We knew the food might be interesting when we walked up and saw a drum of Gulasch cooking over a fire in front of the place. The owners are an Austrian wife and a Hungarian husband (who is also the chef) so the food is split between the two cuisines. The chef did both hearty food and delicate food nicely. We sampled both Hungarian (Debreceni, Bratwurst) and Austrian (Frankfurter) sausages and salamis for appetizers. The Gulasch was wonderful and the Cordon Bleu Schnitzerl was outstanding. We ordered off the specials menu the second night and enjoyed dishes with veal, pork, and beef. Desserts were a strawberry roulade on the first night, tasty bread pudding with vanilla-poppy seed sauce and one “berg” of Salzburger Nockerl with raspberries on the second. The wine list was short but had interesting local selections that were reasonably priced for the quality. We even got to meet the chef on our way out. This place was a wonderful discovery!

Great place! Recommended by our hotel, this is traditional Austrian (full of locals) and great value for money. The menu isn’t huge but what there is, is superb! We had venison casserole, Turkey schnitzel, smoked salmon and pork - all fabulous. The beer is brewed on the premises and is top notch. Service was friendly and efficient. Can’t find anything at all to criticise.

Great /friendly service. Clean and well kept. Excellent Breakfast buffet with made to order eggs. Very helpful in advising us of activities. Great location right next to a bus stop. More rural/rustic feel in a picturesque surrounding (which i prefer) compared to living in Center City.
Rooms much more spacious than similar ones close to center city.
