Christiansfeld, with a population of 2,855 (1 January 2014), is a town in Kolding Municipality in Southern Jutland in Region of Southern Denmark. The town was founded in 1773 by the Moravian Church and named after the Danish king Christian VII. Since July 2015 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Both outside and inside, the historic church of the Moravian Brethren (‘Brodremenighedens Kirke’ in Danish) didn’t resemble any of the churches we have ever seen and that made it particularly interesting. Viewed from the outside, it’s a very simple yellow stone building with a black tiled roof. The central part, crowned by a tiny copper-clad clock tower, dates from 1776, the symmetrical gabled wings were added in 1796.
The inside is even more surprising and reflects the simplicity advocated by the brethren community: a huge hall with wooden floors, white ceilings, white walls, simple white wooden benches. No altar, no pulpit, no decoration or colour, apart from a green cloth with the church’s emblem, the Lamb of God carrying the flag of victory. We found it quite beautiful. We regretted not to find the usual informative leaflet though.
It is interesting to compare this church with the parish church (‘Tyrstrup Kirke’, reviewed elsewhere), just a short walk along Haderslevvej to the south of Christiansfeld centre.

Skamlingsbanken, is the highest point in South Jutland with its placement 113 metres above sea level. Skamlingsbanken is located in beautiful surroundings with magnificent views of the whole region between Kolding and Christiansfeld. There are also views to the Little Belt and Funen and a long way into Jutland to the west. It’s a grand landscape with undulating fields, beech Forests and hedgerows. Skamlingsbanken is also known for the gatherings that took place in support of the Danish cause in South Jutland in the years 1843-59. On Højskamlingen, is a 16-metre-high monument made of 25 granite blocks commemorating the defenders of the Danish cause in Schleswig. The monument was erected in 1863, blown up by the Prussians in 1864 and erected again in 1866. This reconstruction was made possible because people in the area had kept the stones. Near the monument are six other monuments and a platform of large stones. The platform is surrounded by five groups of trees that symbolise the inseparability of the five Nordic countries. These trees are: Beech (Denmark), birch (Sweden), spruce (Norway), juniper (Finland) and rowan (Iceland). After the liberation of Denmark in 1945, a monument was erected in honor of the fallen from the South Jutlandic resistance movement. The hill is a popular destination for excursions and offers a car park, a small exhibition about the history of Skamlingsbanken and a restaurant.

If you are in the area, south of Kolding, visit this nice spot with a fantastic view. It is a large hill, 113 meter, the highest pint in Southern Jutland. The hill was created during the ice age with clay pushed up from a glacier. There is a 16 meter tall memorial column raised in 1863.

Britt (17 gange verdensmester) står selv for undervisningen og på 4 timer fik hun mine to drenge op og windsurfe. Det hele til meget rimelige priser(400kr for børn) Inkl lån af våddragt mm. Området ved Hejlsminde er ideelt til nybegyndere og letøvede da man kan bunde de første 200 meter og vindforholdene er gode. Har også haft lejet SUP boards hos hende i efterårsferien. Der er også en lille cafe og butik. Kan varmt anbefales til både børn og voksne !

Christiansfeld is a beautiful and interesting historic town west of Copenhagen. It's a recent addition to Denmark's limited list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The small museum is very informative - mostly text with photos about the history of the Moravian church in the area and of course about the town itself. The architecture is simple but lovely, and many of the original buildings are intact. It's unfortunate that more of them are not open to the public, but the lovely church hall is worth the trip all by itself. Don't forget to try the famous honey cakes, still made from the original 18th century recipe.

Koldinghus was built in the middle of the 13th century, and in the centuries that followed it was one of Denmark's most important royal Castles. In 1808 there was a fire that left the castle in ruins – a romantic relic. Today the castle has been restored and houses a museum which is a centre for cultural activities and special Exhibitions of international standing.

When visiting the Moravian brethren’s site at Christiansfeld, it is worthwhile to have a look at Tyrstrup parish church, if only for the striking contrast with the brethren’s church hall. It’s only a short walk to the south along Haderslevvej. Today the yellow-brick church seems rather too big for a rural village but when the brethren’s community was founded in 1773 the population in the parish also increased and the existing church became too small. It was demolished and replaced by a bigger church in Gothic Revival style in 1862. Architect was Laurits Albert Winstrup (1815-1889), who built or rebuilt a large number of churches. Only the baptismal font and a Romanesque portal (now the outer gate) of the old church were preserved. Compared to the sleek, all-white interior of the brethren’s church, Tyrstrup church is more colourful and more ornate, but they are both sober.

Such a beautiful area to walk around and admire plants and shrubs from various parts of the world, the Gardens are separated into different areas of the world and there are two different walks (one shorter) so that you can follow the flow around the Gardens. The staff are very helpful and there is a cafe near the entrance. well worth a visit.

If you, like me, are interested in the history of Southern Jutland / Northern Scleswig 1864-1920, this small museum is a "must". The modest price of admission (DKK 30) is worth it. But if this historical period does not interest you, you may well skip this museum visit.
