Providing a loving and final home for retired British Police horses. Brantome Police Horses provides care and rehabilitation for many horses and ponies alongside donkeys, dogs, cats, sheep, goats and chickens. We are situated in the heart of the countryside, ten minutes north of Brantome, South West France. Our primary aim is to provide a safe and caring environment for retired British Police Horses, for the rest of their lives. We open to the public on certain afternoons - always a Wednesday afternoon. Other afternoons will be specified on the home page of our website. We enjoy having people to visit and it is used as part of the rehabilitation process for some of our animals. We provide a great tea and there is a lovely gift shop to browse. With your help, we can give these animals the best possible care, for the rest of their lives. We had an excellent afternoon here during our recent stay in the Dordogne. La Grange is a beautiful setting in the countryside a few kilometres from Brantome (between Perigeux and Angouleme). The visit includes a short talk and presentation explaining the background to the facility, followed by the opportunity to meet a number of the retired police horses. It was fascinating to hear their stories and the bravery they had exhibited while working. After that the afternoon tea including home made scones and cakes with tea or coffee rounded the afternoon off superbly. My wife and our friend Jim are both Coeliacs and the gluten free scone and lemon drizzle cake were both judged to be top notch. This is a very relaxed afternoon with the opportunity to spend more time with the horses after tea as well as visiting the gift shop if you wish to support the work further.

Major site of Aquitaine, Listed as Historic monument. Stop for Sunday strollers, this barony will enchant art and history lovers. Two Castles from different periods, built on a rock Terrace surrounded by a rampart, are overlooking the Dronne.

There wasn't a great deal to see and it was a bit uninspiring inside. The restoration seemed unsympathetic.

The "city" dates back many centuries and there is evidence around every corner. The useful guide leads you to particularly special architectural and historic features. We spent a relaxed 2 hours, and parking is free or modest. Entertaining is the constant stream of canoists trying to get over the weird. The Abbey is supposed to be the main feature of the city, and the caves are interesting, but the city's buildings were the best feature for me.

Of the markets we have visited this is by far our favourite. Whilst the picturesque town of Brantome attracts lots of tourists in the holiday season it still attracts lots of locals helping to retain its Frenchness. There are lots of nice places to eat and drink. I particularly enjoy a crepe from the van in the market. I would also recommend the boat trip and if you are feeling energetic the canoeing. The number of stalls does drop considerably outside the holiday season.

Perfect, gentle river for children and families. Park in a big car park just past the main town where the canoe centre is. They are really helpful and launch you into the water. We chose just a one hour hire in the afternoon, perfect little tour around Brantome which is a large island I suppose. nice Bridges and an abbey to pass. Note: There are 2 wiers to navigate but we just dropped over the first and climber the 2nd(not too big). My kids thought this was fun.

We booked this for 4 English people as it said they did English tours. When we turned up we were just handed some sheets of english information in poly pockets. The guide at the front spoke perfect English (would say he was about 46) but he did everything in french. Not even a hello in English or tell us where we were on the guide. He kept putting his hat on and off, flicking his head, walking around, stretching and even worse he was rude (in french) to anyone who was in front of the boat. Awful man and ruined our trip. Most of the time on the way back was just floating around and we still returned early,

We have a very small campsite in the Dordogne. Two of our campers wanted to go canoeing. We called Allo Canoes in Brantome on Wednesday 13/5/15 and reserved 2 kayaks RDV time 10.00 on Friday 15/5/15. Our campers duly turned up only to find no-one there and a chain across the gate. They waited around for a while, then left. On their return to our campsite they expressed their disappointment at what had happened. On telephoning the operator, after a couple of feeble excuses he eventually gave the excuse that as the weather didn't look so good he decided that our campers wouldn't turn up so didn't bother to 1) call us - he had our number or 2) go to the location to check if they were there waiting. He did offer the guys a free trip next time they come to France!!!
There was no misunderstanding as the whole conversation with the operator was done in fluent French.
Now is that a way to run a business? At least a quick call to say are you coming? or I think maybe the weather is not suitable. Common courtesy.
We will not be recommending them again as we were put in a very embarrassing situation. Fortunately there is another company operating canoe hire in Brantome.

There are 2 boat tours available on the river at Brantome, of the two L'Arche de Noe is my preferred choice, being a smaller (16 seat If my memory serves me) punt pushed along by the operator, (the other operator offers motor powered tour boats).
Trip is pleasant, taking you along the river with lovely views of the town, out into the countryside nearby. There are ruins on one bank.
The water ends up very shallow, the boat grounding on the gravel bottom, sometimes necessitating the passengers moving forward or astern to get the boat moving again - all part of the experience.
The punter - an old man - spoke only French and his commentary was therefore in that language.

The Notre-Dame church was built in the early 16th century by cardinal Amanieu d’Albret, commendatory abbot of Saint-Pierre (St. Peter) Abbey of Brantome, in order that the villagers could have a parish church within the city. The single nave is covered with rib vaults. A bartizan belfry rises at the angle facing the bridge. The church was deconsecrated in the 19th century and was converted into a covered market and village hall. It now houses the PERIGORD Dronne Belle Tourist Office in Brantome. From December to February: Certified truffle market on Friday mornings (9:00-12:00 AM)

We went in to find out when the market day was. We had got it wrong but were informed that it was Friday.
They are well stocked with literature as they should be with such a popular place.
They were helpful and efficient. Can't ask for more.
