Wolfhound offers three tours of Ireland: Southern, Western and Northern. We took the Southern tour in August 2017. First, let me tell you what this is not. I have been on week long bike tours by five different companies, including Backroads, VBT and Sojourn. They were all just fine and very similar. Wolfhound was different. Note it is billed as Biking, Hiking and History. And indeed you got some of all these. The accommodations were nice and comfortable but not posh. It is hard to separate out whether the special aspect of this trip was due to the beautiful and interesting country or the tour guide Dave O’Conner. Probably a combination of both. Dave was without question the best tour guide I have experienced. While the other outfitter guides all have good knowledge of the sites, Dave’s breadth of knowledge was much deeper, not to mention his sense of humor. Having studied history at university he was erudite and well informed in all aspects of Ireland, from its history to its current status – political, economic and social. He toured with great sensitivity to his guests adjusting the tour for the desires of the group and the constantly changing weather.
I hope to someday book another with Dave. My colleague who went with me has done so already.

As Irish weather consisted of showers with some dry spells, zip lining is the perfect Irish activity as you're guarded by the trees. Great facility and staff are friendly and helpful. Few tips: book in advance as you won't get a slot especially in summer, bring a fleece or equivalent as it can be colder than you think and if you're an adult in the summer time, try to beat the kids to the initiation part as you can lose an hour here. You have up to 5 courses and many of them have only one (if they're under 9). I think staff are ok with with that too. Toilet at facility would be nice but toilets aren't far away. Other activities to do at Lough Key so it's a good place to go.

We visited Lough Key Forest Park in summer time, and spent of the time there rowing out to view McDermott's Castle located on Lough Key, which is roughly circular in shape and measures about 10km across. There are over 30 Islands, including Castle Island, where McDermott's Castle stands. The castle was built c. 1800 by the King family as a summer house and burned down during the 2nd world war. The mooring place for the boat was already taken so we were forced to row about to the other side and clamber our way up the rough grass and rocks after getting the boat tethered. The castle dates back to the 18th century but, sadly, is now in ruins and frankly dangerous, especially when standing near the high walls with loose stones on top. Nevertheless, many structural features of the castle are preserved in the outer ivy coated shell.

King House is a beautifully restored Georgian mansion situated in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. First built in 1730 as the seat of the King family, a powerful local landowning dynasty, the house later became a military barracks and recruiting depot for the famous Irish regiment of the British army, the Connaught Rangers. The house is now open to the public as a museum dedicated to bringing its history to life. The house is also an art gallery housing the Boyle Civic Art Collection, the third largest public collection in Ireland. We look forward to your visit!

Visited Kings House today all the family really enjoyed it. Worth getting the audio tour really enhances the tour. It is a stunning house steeped in history. It is a self guided tour. At €15 for a family great value.

Lovely trip around Lough Key with lots of interesting facts given by the crew. Suitable for young and old - well thought up and very enjoyable. Wish I could say I made it inside, but we got there at 9am and it opened at 9:30. It looked very nice from the outside and got lots a great pics but very sad that it had a later opening. Cost~5eu to enter. Get the OPW Heritage Card if you are visiting lots of Castles and abbeys in Ireland.

Tullyboy Farm is a real working farm open to visitors and is a great day out for all the family in a safe environment. There is a whole range of activities available, miniature tractor barrel rides, straw dives for goodies, playground, indoor and outdoor picnic areas, large indoor sandpit and toy tractor run. Meet our friendly animals and feed and cuddle the puppies, little piglets, Llamma, Alpaca, Emu, Bambi and lots more. Meet Farmer Matt and go on the Tullyboy Farm Express tractor trailer ride,the kids love it. Have a pony ride on Bob by lead rein. Most activities are included in the day visit at no extra cost so it represents great value for money at €7 per person. We are open 7 days a week from 10.30 To 6pm. Stay as long as you like, make a day of it on Tullyboy Farm. We also have packages for Hen Parties and all types of groups.

I'm not usually overly pushed with these road side sculptures and art installations but have to say this one is pretty impressive looming high above the N4. It's worth a pull in if you're driving past and from the car park there are lovely views over Lough Key. The sculpture itself is really well done when you're up close to it and the history is interesting too.
