The 10 Best Shopping in Western Cape, South Africa

September 7, 2021 Renato Branum

South Africa’s most popular tourist destination offers the urban thrills of Cape Town, its adjacent wine country and an aura of the rich political history of South Africa. The Overberg's perfect whale-watching perches provide excitement of a different nature. The Garden Route's lakes and forests and the Klein Karoo's ostrich-farming towns and vineyards present another take on the Cape. For extra kicks, try bungee jumping or cage-diving among Great Whites.

We were wandering around Knsyna on a sunny afternoon, and happened to pop into Jan’s studio. What began as a chance stop-in turned into a wonderful experience talking with Jan about his interesting life as an artist. He kindly offered us water, coffee, or wine, and made us feel at home while we looked around at his incredibly unique art pieces (all finger-painted!!!). His kind nature was apparent through his artwork and his actions. We really enjoyed talking to him and ended up buying some small pieces and a unique wine cork board. I wish I had pictures to share. An absolute must!!!!!!!!!!

Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden

TO ENTER AN ARTIST’S GARDEN IS TO VISIT ANOTHER WORLD. The Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden is a place of expansive vistas, scents and the sounds of nature, with tranquil groves, hidden paths and lush indigenous vegetation. The project began serendipitously in 2009 when Lewis hired an excavator on a whim and began shaping the contours of what would become the seven-hectare sculpture garden. Today, the artist continues to explore themes integral to his work in this serene landscape on the slopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain looking out over vineyards towards the ocean. Visits and tours by appointment only.

I was invited to take part in a private guided tour through the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. I am not an art person but I do like nature. I was absolutely blown away by this serenity and peaceful atmosphere that opens up once one enters the garden. There is hope for mankind if someone can create something so beautiful and just let it breath - in nature - surrounded by mountains & skies and it almost feels like his sculptures were always there. From the beginning of the beginning. I would highly recommend to have a guide walking with you, it certainly is worth the money if one is interested how the artist started this amazing garden.

Red Room Gallery

Founded in 2012, Red Room Gallery is a pioneering art gallery upon which unique, contemporary African art is exposed to the greater international art market. The gallery seeks to source and display African works focusing primarily on black artists from across the continent, providing them with a means to market and profit from their talent and personal brand. The art on show is anything but the clichéd generic trinkets one finds on the side of the road, but alluring representations of the realities of African people. It is not African art through a Western lens, but African art seen through African eyes. Our work also prioritises artist development, as we provide opportunities for international exhibitions. Through this, we hope to expose the world to art that lives and breathes artistic life, and tells the stories of Africans both at war and at peace with their past. Red Room Gallery seeks to call and unite African artists to create a market for their stories yet unheard.

Wild Oats Community Farmers Market

Wild Oats is a local farmers and food market open every Saturday morning until 12 noon. We are located on the western outskirts of Sedgefield at the turnoff to Sedgefield Island. An award winning Garden Route landmark we are not to be confused with the Scarab Craft Market to the far east of Engen Petrol Station or the Mosaic Flea Market across the road from Wild Oats. As a food market, our open times are limited due to the short shelf-life of many of our LOCALLY PRODUCED products which include: Free-range chicken, beef, pork and lamb, free-range eggs, multiple cheese, dairy and baked products including fresh gouda, cheddar, blue-cheeses... milk, fresh fish, fruits, free-range & organic vegetables in season, many traditional and exotic bottled goods, organic olives, berries, rusks, koeksisters, biltong & wors, famous artisan breads, award-winning cheesecakes and goats cheeses... and on and on and on. Also a fabulous range of hot-off-the-grill breakfasts, coffees, teas and fresh-squeeze juices and smoothies. FOOD HEAVEN! Come face-to-face with our local food producers every Saturday morning, come rain or shine.
