May 9, 2023 Giuseppe Pratt

One of Japan's most-visited hot springs resorts, the hilly city of Beppu is often blanketed in steam, providing a clue to its enduring appeal. It's unabashedly touristic, but sinking into a steaming thermal pool offers an appealing way to escape the crowds.

What an indulgence

We booked the Executive Japanese Western Style Suite which was located in the middle building out of the 3. There was a little tatami room where the staff kindly made the mattresses during dinner time where our 2 young kids could sleep. Then my husband and I occupied the remaining 2 double beds which was just A LOT of space! Dinner was served in one of the restaurants in the same building. Our family of 7 was glad that we got to occupy in a private dining room. Too bad the weather was cloudy that we couldn't see the sun rise at 7am. The suite had a big living room area with a balcony facing the horizon. The view in a cloudy day was already stunning. It's a pity we couldn't see it in the best weather. The breakfast buffet at the same building got so many food choices we didn't get to try everything we would like. This was also because the breakfast time ended at 9:30am... Unlike in other hotels where they would let the guests finish the remaining food even though breakfast time is over, here the food was already being removed at 9:30am.

It is so nice seeing the sunrise while relaxing in the onsen. The food in the restaurant are great, especially the beef and goose liver. Overall speaking, it's a great experience.

Room is above average size in Japan. Interior decoration a bit dated. Services are generally good. The hotspring pools are acceptable. That said, I didn't feel the hotspring water slippery onto my skin and no sulphur smelling. Wonder if the water is real hotspring. Asked their staff who confirmed yes. But this was not my prior experience in hotspring water. You could literally smell sulphur when you passed by some hotspring sites.

Retreat in the mountains to relax

We recently stayed for 2 nights. This is a very traditional hotel /onsen with a golf course, and a theme park next door. The scenery around the hotel is beautiful and it was lovely to walk around the golf course and the surrounding areas. The room itself was huge with an entryway, traditional tea room, bathroom and Japanese style bath shower, lounge and twin beds. We had a verandah looking towards the wedding chapel. Breakfast was satisfactory however the restaurant food at night was a disappointment. The hotel is about 30 mins drive from the township of Beppu, nothing else around the hotel.

Proper hot spring spa type hotel

This was bolt hole no.1 on our Rugby World Cup weekend, it was a good choice! I had already booked a nights stay here on the Saturday of England's rugby QF v Australia. We hastily arranged a Friday stay when it became clear commuting from Fukuoka to Beppu was going to be a major issue on match say. Turned out a great plan! So 2 nights, we enjoyed the Spa which me and my wife made full use of. The outdoor baths range in temperatures and size. At the time we stayed there, it was the chosen bolt hole of many a rugby newspaper hack! There was Messrs S Jones and M Cleary of the broad sheets and M Samuels of the Mail, amongst others. We also had rugby correspondents from Sky Sports news. Funny choice since Oita is quite a commute from that hotel. Anyway, I digress. Hotel rooms are plain but comfortable plus large enough. Walk in showers and breakfast had a wide selection. Friendly staff but an odd gown and slippers rule (not strictly enforced, just as well as slippers were too small as were garments). For both nights, we enjoyed drinks in their basic lounge area. Beers were purchased from a vending machine. Usual fayre of Asahi type later, not great but ok. The place is up in the mountains about a 20 min bus ride from Beppu Station. We ate in the evening in Beppu, plenty of choices. All in all, a fun stay.

Some might say this hotel looks old but to me it fits in well with the rustic, peaceful town of Beppu. The room aas clean, the staff were helpful and friendly to introduce the various hotel amenities to us, including two onsens within their grounds.

Comfortable Baths but Hotel in Desperate Need of Maintenance

Reviewed By Gerald O

After a very, long, hot, stuffy, bumpy bus ride from the train station to the on-sen, I was ready for a nice, hot relaxing bath and I wasn't disappointed. The bathing facilities were decent. This seems like an on-sen that the locals might stop by on the way home from work. Not too many frills. You bathe and then you sit in the sauna for 10 minutes, then you bathe again and that's it. A little disappointing for someone used to wonderful spas in which you can bathe, then relax in a big comfy chair and have a beer and some noodles, maybe read a book, then go bathe again. In this on-sen, if you aren't actually in the bath, then you are in your room (which is very nice and comfortable) or in one of the horribly decrepit stinking cigarette hallways or lounge areas. The sky lounge is nice and quiet and a perfect place for a late night draft beer. The staff are friendly and attentive and the location is very good for sightseeing among the different "hells" that are the main tourist attraction of the area. I noticed some blue construction tarps set up around the lobby, so perhaps they are doing some much-needed renovating. Seriously - the hallways are absolutely fetid, which don't do justice to the very nice rooms or the perfectly acceptable (although a bit unimaginative) bathing facilities.

Great onsen experience!

Reviewed By xianora

This was my first onsen experience and I have to say that it was really great! The water was so hot that it took time for me to fully submerge in the hot spring. Better to have scalding hot shower first to get used to the temperature. The people in Hozanso were also very nice to us and try hard to communicate using English/Korean since we hardly know any Japanese. The traditional Japanese breakfast included in the room we paid for was good. Nothing exceptional but I guess it's the experience that counts. The room we stayed in was also nice and clean. The futon was surprisingly soft. It was my first time sleeping on a futon and I thought it would still feel like sleeping on the floor. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and would stay here again if I go back to Beppu.
