The 10 best Japanese Pensions in Nikko, Japan

May 9, 2023 Terina Blouin

The shrines and temples of Nikko have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here, you can visit the Toshogu Shrine, which dates from the 17th century and is a monument to (and the mausoleum of) Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of a shogunate that ruled Japan for 250 years. Travelers day-tripping from Tokyo generally focus on the sacred sites, but if you have extra time, explore the area’s beautiful waterfalls and lakes.

Great time w/ private onsen

Reviewed By dmzanetti

I stayed 2 nights with my wife and 7y so and we just loved it! We stayed in the Japanese style room and it was super cosy. The staff were super friendly (they even drove us to the restaurant because there were no taxis available) and the private onsen were amazing! We had a great time!

Nice hotel in Nikko. A bit out of town

Reviewed By MJonesPE

Stayed one night in May while motor cycling touring. Hotel was nice, the lure was the outdoor porch hot water spring tub. Very nice. Room was fine, bed was a bit soft for my liking but the tub made up for it. The restaurant was buffet. WiFi was solid for those that need it. You really need a vehicle to get here though. Very quiet. Good stop for night.

Returned after six years, still find it an ideal place to stay.

Quiet, clean, with an attractive glass-enclosed public bath with hot spring water piped from a kilometer away (you flip the sign to show it is occupied, so it is essentially private), located at the end of the road at the beginning of the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, with its row of many jizo. Hot water for tea available all day, some attractive pottery on sale, too. Nearest place to eat is the Bell Cafe, recommended.

It’s a lovely place to stay, close to the river. The rooms are nice and the bath was much appreciated after a long day. Breakfast is really good with fruits, egg, and toasts. Very close to the shrines. Definitely recommended!

Lovely, family run hotel

Reviewed By Michele D

We spent 2 days at this inn. The rooms were very comfortable and the inn-keeper could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The only draw-back to the inn is the distance from the station and restaurants. You can do this uphill walk in half an hour, but not with luggage. This didn't really matter though as our host drove us to and from the station. A very homely place to stay.

Gasthof Ami

Reasonably Priced and High Quality Place to Stay

Reviewed By russellw170

I chose Gasthof Ami for the reasonable price so had no real expectation s that it would be anything out of the ordinary. It is very clean and quiet. the windows are double-glazed which also makes it warmer than a typical Japanese small hotel in winter! Inside and out, it is reminiscent of a British B & B. The owner was polite and businesslike but not particularly chatty, I assume due to being very busy as much as anything else. The WiFi was a bit erratic but came back after a few minutes. There is an outside hot tub but in early March, I passed on that. The small hot tub inside can be used by guests anytime. It is not a public bath, simply lock the door and soak for a while. The area is quiet and nice for a walk. The only drawback is the lack of any bars or restaurants within walking distance. You can get something at the nearby supermarket. The breakfast is typical English style. If like me, you don't like pork or ham then ask in advance since there is a lot of it in the breakfast. The coffee is good! Getting there is not hard at all and you do not need a car contrary to what another reviewer said. Get off at bus stop No. 14 - Arasawa, cross the street and walk back for a few minutes. Pass a hotel called Mori no Uta (森のうた in Japanese) and turn left at the corner. There are some signs there indicating several small hotels. Walk down the road and Gasthof Ami is more or less in the middle. See my photos for an image of the hotel and the signs to look out for. This is the perfect location to spend the weekend in Nikko, See Toshogu on Saturday, stay the night at Gasthof Ami and then go on to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls on Sunday.

Homely and Comfortable

Reviewed By JiveSun

Pension Chuzenji was homely and comfortable, and the view of Lake Chuzenji from the room was spectacular. The separate and private onsen was very clean and literally and figuratively heart-warming. The dinner and the breakfast were more than I had expected and were indeed delicious. I finished all the dishes, of course, and felt very content. The hostess was cheerful and friendly. In native Japanese and basic English, she explained everything in detail and did her best to make my stay, however short, as memorable as possible. Needless to say, my stay at Pension Chuzenji was pleasantly memorable. When I checked out the next day, I told the hostess that I would returned when I visited Lake Chuzenji again in the near future.

Hotel Harumoto

Affordable but don't expect too much

Reviewed By Miho S

Today is currently my second night in Harumoto, and will be staying here for two more days. It is very affordable, book it in advance coz it is easily fully booked. It is very near shrines and bus stops and there is a nearby family mart which is convenient. It has full amenities except I was expecting a bottle of body wash, shampoo and conditioner but all I got was a fee sachets of soaps and shampoo. The bathroom is a bit bad for me. It doesnt separate toilet and bath, only had a curtain. The shower's temperature is never steady. Always have to adjust the faucet coz it keeps changing. Sometimes hot water doesn't come out and have to wait for it. But since it isn't high end one, and I never expect beyond what I pay, I am over all satisfied. The communal bath is a bit old looking, but still nice. Breakfast is nice too. And there is a supply of tea and hot water in the room.
