Hostel Cuore Kurashiki

Great location, comfortable dorm and nice bar

Reviewed By siel

I spent one night in Kurashiki on my way to Takamatsu. I arrived rather late but still went for a walk around the canal in the old town - definitely worth it as it’s much quieter than during the day. Same thing for an early morning walk, great for pictures. Hostel Cuore has a nice bar downstairs, where you also check in and check out. The female dorm was very comfortable, it’s more as if you have your own mini-room: the upper ‘pods’ have real stairs to climb up to them instead of a ladder. There is a curtain in front of every pod-entrance, so lots of privacy (apart from the curtain for the external window that was lacking right in front of my bed). I did miss a fridge in the tiny common room though, where kitchen facilities seemed very limited. It’s very close to the old quarter, in a perfect location. I went for lunch at the Mamakari-tei, they only serve the famous ‘sardines’ with their most expensive menu set, but it was definitely worth it. I visited several of the sites: - Ohara museum of art: I skipped the part with western painting but enjoyed the Asian section. In the morning there was also a hall open with views of the garden, worth a look. - Ohashi house: lovely place with a really enchanting tea house at the end of the tour. You can order the tea in the previous stop ( the library if I remember well) but have it served in the teahouse with a view of the garden. Lovely and quiet experience, nice chat with the lady working there. - I skipped the toy and Momotaro museums as I had no specific interest in them and didn’t want to overload the day - Kurabo memorial hall: not a lot of English captions, but if you like old pictures of the industrial heritage of the area, this is a nice stop - Achi-jinja: lovely shrine just a short climb up from the old quarter. Very atmospheric and quiet. - Craft museum: well presented, nice souvenir shop I ended up buying quite some souvenirs here: some cute toys and products made from the fabric that is used in tatami mats.

Great Kitchen/Lounge Area, Otherwise a Disappointment

Reviewed By James S

Nice lounge with kitchen facilities and complimentary coffee/tea. Too bad it is unavailable six hours/day. Poor pre-arrival email communication, sent entirely in Japanese. When I responded days before my arrival that I did not understand Japanese, please send in English, I received no response. Silly policy that requires all guests to vacate kitchen/lounge/building from 10 am-4 pm daily, so just a place to enjoy evening and sleep, and not available during the daytime hours, even after check-in. Dorm bed was very uncomfortable, could feel the frame poking me in the back through the thin mattress.

Favourite accommodation of the trip

Reviewed By Peter T

On my second trip to Japan I was visiting many towns and cities in Chugoku along the Seto Inland Sea coast and I stayed a night in Asakuchi between Kurashiki and Fukuyama along the way. I sent them an email in Japanese (translated with the help of the internet) to make the reservation and they answered me within the next day. Konko is the nearest station, from there about a ten minute walk. The gate was open when I got there so after looking around and seeing nobody I walked in to the building and shouted ‘konbanwa!’. The lady there came out and greeted me, her husband speaks a bit of English and Spanish so he checked me in and showed me my room. The owners of the place live in a separate building while the two dorms and the common room are next to the entrance, so this was the only time I saw them since I also checked out very early. Beautiful house, might I say, all very traditional and made out of wood, sliding doors and tatami in the rooms. The common room had a very old small retro TV, a fridge, toaster, kettle, microwave and there’s free wi-fi throughout the house. It may not be a total luxury hotel but it was a nice little space that felt like someone’s home, so I appreciate the insight into daily Japanese life over anything else. The walls seemed like they’d been peeled off but I didn’t feel uncomfortable or dirty eating there. The shower room and toilet were clean (the door to the toilet was very fun since it had a traditional lock) and there’s a bidet with all the toilet buttons one may need. 2700yen for the dorm, I was the only guest there so I had the room to myself anyway. The window view was of the vegetable garden and the room also had a tokonoma. Futon was so comfortable, I woke up early because of the light coming in through the window but I felt rested all the same. The town is small and lovely and nice to walk around, a woman even stopped to talk to me. There’s a shrine nearby; nothing impressive but it was nice to see a small-town shrine, it also had a kura storehouse attached to it and you can see the town from a higher view. There are a few places to eat along the main road (including the cutest ramen place and an okonomiyaki restaurant), a konbini and a supermarket. The hostel also offers meals if you would prefer. All in all, it was a lovely stay and turned out to be my favourite accommodation of the trip. I would’ve loved to spend a few extra nights as I did my touristing in the towns and cities around. I’ll definitely try to go back there one day.

最悪です!

Great value for the location, friendly and comfortable

Reviewed By belinda-ann

Yuji-inn was in a great location, and the room was basic but clean and comfortable. The owner is very helpful, and all the shared spaces are super-clean, and nicely designed. It's great value for a location right on the edge of the historic canal area, but also easy walk to supermarket, train station etc. Not a bad thing, but be aware that it feels a little more like a hostel than a guest house - all facilities are shared, no towels provided, no room locks (small safe boxes where you provide your own lock) and the house is closed during the day (although we were given a code so we could get access).
