Fabulous warehouse conversion cyclist hotel

Superb hotel. Boutique feeling to this exposed brick warehouse conversion. Rooms are modern and industrial chic. Restaurant, bar and Cafe all serving great food and drinks. Service and the entire hospitality is first class. On site Giant bike shop also gives the cycling enthusiast all the kit and equipment you could need. The hotel is at the start of the famous Shimanami Kaido course. A must visit. Must.

Anagononedoko

Sharing the same long and narrow shape as the bed of an eel, the Onomichi guesthouse Anago no Nedoko was named after the local townhouse specialty of anago (or eel in English) and is a property of the Onomichi vacant housing renewal project, Akiyasaisei. Formerly a port town, the shopping district area of Onomichi flourished long ago. Even now old, elongated townhouses are still abundant in the middle of town, but the interior and full extent of these buildings-how interiors are divided and used for living -goes unseen and is not widely known even in Onomichi. These historical buildings have a special place in our hearts and we are trying to do our best to pass them on to the next generation. Until now here hasn't been a big enough influx of young people to shoulder the load in the creative field in Onomichi, people with the aim of expanding tourism, with an eye towards sharing information, cultures and ideas in a new space with the old atmosphere. And so in the fall of 2012 the Onomichi guesthouse Anago no Nedoko opens its doors as the doors of more and more shops in the old shopping arcade close for good. We hope our guesthouse will be a base for strangers and young people to connect to the area.

Affordable and great character

Reviewed By sinjoorAntwerp

We (2 parents, 2 kids, 1 grandmother) stayed in the family room for two nights and loved it. We were a bit surprised that there was another “private” room next to ours, separated by a simple sliding door (locked) only. So there is little privacy, but it is a real traditional old building. This is what all houses used to be. We used the washer and dryer, very handy to have that on the premises. Staying in a place with shared spaces always needs a bit of luck : hope that the other guests have similar preferences as you do. We were lucky : the staff helped us with finding a good restaurant and made the reservation, some guests were interesting conversation partners. We planned to stay for 1 night but had to adjust our schedule to 2 and we were very happy : Onomochi is an interesting place worth a visit, so even if you considered it as a start/ the end of the Shimanami biking trip I would recommend you take your time here and enjoy it all.

Good location but a little bit overpriced

Reviewed By JapanTraveller616

Pros: Great location. Friendly staff. Nice onsen, though a bit on the small side. Massage chair in room (didn’t try it.) comfy bed. Cons: Price was cheap but still a bit high for a room with no private toilet. Also windows are permanently locked and you can’t see out of them. Overall the room felt austere and not very well soundproofed.

Reviewed By Akomomo

Nice little spot to wake up

Reviewed By blackhawke2019

Pretty average modern Japanese style hotel, albeit they seem to be making many recent improvements. The bathrooms had old tired floors, but the walls, tubs, sinks, and toilets were all new and wonderful. The carpet was worn and old in places, but in others brand new. The rooms were filled with 1980s wallpaper, but the bedding and televisions were new. So you get the point...the place is on the up and up and not a chain hotel... Clean, comfortable and in a great place to see a lot of things. Seriously, Onomichi and the inland sea are a gorgeous stop...and this is a good place to get some rest before your bike or ride through the area! If your room faces the harbor you are in luck for a show of boats passing too and fro...just remember that early morning light warms the rooms quick! Beds were Japanese style twin beds, a little more firm than a soft American like me likes but definitely softer than others. The duvets were warm and snug...and they had the awesome soft side/bean side pillows I like now. So comfy! The coffee isn't in the room, but there is a great machine down the hall for American style coffee...just be careful walking back to your room! The restaurant and other amenities seem awesome, but we didn't partake. The television has VOD which you need a ticket from the vending machine room (make sure your kids don't see the adult VOD pamphlet when you get into the room). Oh and there's a massage chair on the 6th floor...love these things after a long day of walking!

Unique and beautiful.

Whilst perched above a ship building town you could be 1000 miles away. Such a stunning view from every room. The service and restaurants here are second to none and the hospitality from the staff is professional and friendly. In all my years travel this in probably one of my favourite hotels and I hope I get the opportunity to stay here again one day.

Reviewed By johnmcglynn8

The grounds of the hotel are spacious and nestled prettily among the mountains. The hot baths are large and very clean, great for families. And the food and hotel service was excellent. Unfortunately, despite booking a non-smoking room, the room itself had a very foul tobacco smell. Consequently, my family was forced to keep the window open the entire night.

Amazing guesthouse!

Reviewed By Theresa H

This was the nicest place we stayed at in our entire 3-week Japan travels! Lovely staff, very helpful and perfect English speakers. Everything was very clean and well maintained. The views are superb and waking up overlooking temples, the sea and the bridge was almost a magical experience. The many steps up to the guesthouse are tiring, especially if you have lots of luggage to carry, but it is so worth it! Would definitely book again and wish there were more placed like this in Japan!

A comfortable budget hotel

Reviewed By Soumitra N

Just walking distance from the ferry and Onamichi JR station , this hotel stands facing the sea . An average budget hotel with small but comfortable rooms for a short stay . Add JPY 600 to your room stay and a fixed Japanese menu breakfast (refer photo) is served in the dining room ( located on 2F ) which has a nice view of the sea and ferry . Coming from Shin -Onamichi station , the hotel is a bit far and once has to take a taxi , down a long sloping winding road .
