Better nothing

Huge creepy hotel, with a little chapel for cheap weddings in the middle. Rooms essentials and full of spiders, breakfast like “Mensa dei poveri”, and almost empty. No ac working in the corridors. The staff at least speaks English.

Our first hot spring experience

Reviewed By jlai0316

Travel with family and it is our first hot spring experience. It is a traditional Japanese style hotel. The hot spring area is very big and we enjoy it much. I especially enjoy the outdoor one. The dinner is nice and the staff is nice too. You can enjoy a piece of silence in this hotel and enjoy a nice walk in the forest next to the hotel. My boy is very happy to meet with the staff. Anyway, it would be good if the duration of the breakfast can be longer, let's say until 10:00am. It would be a good pick if you want to enjoy the traditional hot spring, room, meals, and services.

Very nice hotel except a bit old

Reviewed By kenyunyk

I spent my first night in Kagoshima at this hotel in early December and took the package with dinner and breakfast. One of the two blocks is under repair and upgrade against earthquake. The dinner was very nice in presentation but quality of some servings like tempura was not up to standard. The number of serviings and quantity is more than sufficient. The buffet breakfast got good variety and quality covering western and Japanese style food. Room is spacious but facilities inside room is a bit old as number of power sockets is marginal. However, the hot spring was very good in view of size and view. I must say it is value for money for the accommodation.

Great value

Stayed here for two nights. A smoking room was assigned but I did not change room as all are acceptable. I arrived the hotel and left my backpacker at reception in the early morning and got a check-in after finishing my day hike at Kirishima. The hotel is located closed (around 10 mins walk) to JR station where you can get a day pass to Kirishima. And, I took off bus at the second last stop where is next to a park and under a bridge. Then, it just took 5 mins walk back to hotel. I also take airport bus at this stop. The room is big with a windows. It is clean and the room rate is reasonable. Staff is very nice. There are no rubbish bins inside, one for combustible and non-combustible. I suggest some examples could be provided for distinguishing two types of rubbish as we all understand the importance of saving the environment. Free bike is offered which is a bonus to me. I explored Kokubu with well-functioned city bike all the time and found out a farmer market nearby. Also, i cycled to the city nearby. Airport bus schedule is provided at reception. It takes around 30 mins to the airport.

Disappointing old onsen hotel

Reviewed By JWong0316

Room: picked a Japanese style tatami room. It's spacious and tidy, yet all the furniture and equipment are very old, and the ceiling light in living room kept switching off automatically. Washroom is very small as if they don't expect customers to bath in room. The only thing I couldn't accept was I found a big cockroach right before I went to bed...! Food: in-room Japanese dinner was pretty good (should be better than buffet dinner). Buffet breakfast had all the basic choices. , but my wife didn't like it as she doesn't like Jap breakfast (e.g. rice, miso soup, pickles). Onsen (hot spring): indoor onsen was spacious yet old. Outdoor onsen is small and not connected to the indoor one so guests have to go separately. Don't suggest trying the outdoor one in spring/summer as there were lots of mosquitos... Service: not bad Location: at the center of Kirishima onsen area so this is truly for visitors who want to do hot spring. Free parking for hotel guests and there are lots of parking lots. Conclusion: being a hot spring hotel, it's not too expensive. But personally I prefer either a newer hotel or a more authentic and luxurious one.

Worthy of a repeat visit

Reviewed By KI-NRT

We decided to add on one night in Kagoshima prior to embarking on our second Yakushima trip. We did this specifically to try out Myoken Ishiharaso - while the ryokan is a relative unknown in foreign circles, the its prominence among Japanese folks as one of the top onsen and culinary ryokans prompted to extend our trip to try it out. We're definitely glad we did! First, the location - even though it's a mere 15 minutes drive from Kagoshima Airport, we felt like we were a world away; the ryokan is on the outskirts of Kirishima National Park, and is situated along the banks of the pretty and quaint Amori River. It's definitely a place you can easily visit from Tokyo or Osaka given its proximity to the airport, and feel like you're in an off-the-beaten-path destination. On the other hand, it's quite a ways away from Kagoshima City proper... if you want to see the sights (Sakurajima, Sengan-en, etc.) then you definitely should plan for a long day or spend two nights in the area. Note that check-in at Ishiharaso is 2PM, and you'll want to get there not much later than that, if you intend to enjoy everything that the ryokan has to offer. We stayed in a Suite in the" Ishikura" annex building called "Kirara." It's generously proportioned (85 square meters) and features a separate bedroom/living room/tatami room, and an open-air outdoor Onsen (natural hot springs) bath on the room's balcony. The added benefit of staying in an Ishikura room (and a handful of the top suites in the main building) is the fact that you can elect to have meals in your own room. We chose Kirara due to preferring a more comfortable (to us), Western-style accommodation - Kirara's bedroom has two double beds, and the living room is furnished with real sofas. Please note that in-room meals are served in the Tatami room. We really enjoyed the variety of Onsens that are available at Ishiharaso. The in-room open-air Onsen was awesome. It's different from many others in that it's full of Iron, and you can really smell it. Not a super pleasant aroma, but it's natural, and it's not overpowering in its aroma. What was impressive is the fact that it's not only is it of the "kakenagashi" (24/7 constant free-flowing) variety, but the volume and force is unlike any other Onsen we've experienced. We could tell that they are close to the source, and there is an abundance of the hot springs water that Ishiharaso taps into. We also tried out several of the Onsens on the property, and they were all interesting in their own unique way. There is a pretty pathway along the river that leads guests to the main "Daiyokujo" (segregated communal bath) that is large and indoors in a separate building that also contains a lounge/cafe. In addition, there are several outdoor Onsens scattered througout the river banks, including a footbath, a mixed-gender bath, and two private rental baths for couples/families/friends. Ishiharaso rents out bathing suits for women, which is (probably!) needed for the mixed-gender bath open-air, even if no other guests are using it, because you really are exposed to the elements (including - possibly - to people on the opposite side of the river; there is a small road that is visible from the bath, so you can potentially be seen.) We also reserved one of the private rental baths (reservations are in 30 minute blocks) called "Mutsumi No Yu." It was large, atmospheric, secluded (no bathing suits needed) and - again - the powerful force of the hot spring water flowing into the bath was unreal. I definitely recommend that you try out one of the private baths. Myoken Ishiharaso is consistently rated in the top 5 among ryokans that offer the best dining experience. We've stayed at over 60 of the finest luxury ryokans over the past 5 years, and can say that it definitely lands in our top 10 list. We were graciously served by Clement, a native of Reunion (an island off the Eastern coast of Africa) who is fluent in French, English, Japanese, Spanish and German, and a gentleman that was perfectly suited to also serve local Japanese guests due to his knowledge and local language skills (he also personally translates the menu into English himself.) Ishiharaso is not far from the Ocean and is also next to the Kirishima mountains along with the clean Amori River, so there is no shortage of amazing seasonal vegetables (most are wild and organic), seafood, river fish and the famed Kagoshima Black Beef, Black Pork and Black Chicken. The kitchen staff do an incredible job of taking the ingredients and turning them into magical dishes. The simmered Japanese Turnip with Kagoshima Black Chicken was a definitely highlight, as was the Shabu Shabu hot pot with Kurobuta Black Pork that had a soup broth based on local White Miso. Overall, the food was creative, unique, flavorful and beautifully presented and hosted. This small, luxury 19-room Onsen retreat is on the short list of ryokans that will likely earn our repeat visit, availability permitting.

Great view and service

Reviewed By JeromeDZ

We came her in Feb 2022 for a weekend getaway from the city. Glad we did.All of the room will have a city view but if you book one of the corner rooms, you will not only get a nice tatami area for viewing but will have a city and mountain view, but be sure to get the top 2 floors for the best view. Also, if you book rooms ending in 01, 02, or 03, these will be closest to the elevators (the rooms were pretty well insulated against noise). The property also has a public onsen bath. To access it take a short automatic tram ride to a separate lounge area stocked with ice cream and drinks, then a short walk to the bath house. Along the way you will see a few cabanas that you can use to have a nice picnic when the weather permits. Meals are served in a semi-private space, meaning you will have a room but noice from the other guest do bleed through since the walls do not go all the way up to the ceiling. Food was great. For breakfast, the hotel knew that I hated to look for small pin bones in the fish so intead the substituted it for stewed pork. The staff also performed one of the local legends after dinner, don't miss it. Overall, its a great hotel with excellent service.

私人溫泉

Reviewed By samuelkfp2000
