Souqs of Rissani

The date market located off of the main intersection in town is the place to be in early October. They hold a 3-day festival there every year just after the date harvest. You can try them before you purchase. There are many varieties to test out, but the Medjools are the largest, sweetest and juiciest of them all. The festival involves both prayers and entertainment as well as a food fest. People come from all over the region to participate. The date is one of the first foods eaten after each day of fast during Ramadan, even before partaking of Harissa soup. It is offered as a token of welcome and friendship to anyone who enters a Muslim home in addition to mint tea. We were there during the day watching the transactions between farmers and vendors who either sell directly to the public or to dried fruit and nut merchants in the country's Medinas. You can purchase them by the crate, still on the stalk like bananas or already packaged in either a single variety or mixed packages. We had fun walking from vendor to vendor trying their fruit. We finally negotiated a price for several pounds that we would eat during our travels and have mixed into some tagine dishes for sweetness. Oh, but they were good and nutritious too. Yuuummmmm!

Rue Bab Doukkala Market

Reviewed By DMVEAL - Great Torrington, United Kingdom

It was here that I loved mooching and soaking up the essence of Marrakech. Up side was it wasn’t too busy or too many people hassling you... if you ignore and don’t give eye contact you’ll be fine... beware of ‘shark’ alley where children and men offer to take you to ‘ the one day when the Berber come down from the mountains to sell their skins to the tannery ‘... these are people who weave you in and out of the alleys and then walk you round one of the many tannery’s giving a whistle stop tour then on to a leather shop where they try and sell you a leather, bag, belt or anything for 10x its value. If you don’t buy the man then asks for money for the ‘tour of the tannery’ 50 euros and if you don’t pay they leave you to find your way back... DONT pay we didn’t and they can’t do anything... we then asked stall holders who were more honest or policeman or woman who directed us back. These sharks are the minority and shop owners warn you as they don’t like them either....!! Once you know this you’ll enjoy the sound.

Place Seffarine

Reviewed By HINAWASEEM - Islamabad, Pakistan

This photogenic triangular square is located near the Kairaouine Mosque in Fes El Bali. You can hear this square before seeing it as it is filled with dozens of metalworkers or dinandiers pounding their hammers. There are metalware shops, a school for coppersmiths and Madrasa Seffarine here. You can buy copper decoration pieces, pots and dishes, drums and Morocco’s iconic copper lanterns.

Souk el Henna

Reviewed By HINAWASEEM - Islamabad, Pakistan

This Souk is located in Fes old Medina, just off Souk el Attarine. It is a peaceful square in the bustling Medina. Unlike other concrete alleys you can see several trees here. You can find henna, kohl and traditional balms stalls here. This square is connected to the oldest and largest mental asylum of Fes called Maristane Sidi Frej. This place was also unique because it used musical therapy to cure the patients. It is a good place to buy herbs, olives, pottery and musical instruments.
