Weyermann Specialty Malts

Reviewed By ProfPTJ - Washington DC, United States

I'm biased, since I'm a homebrewer and I often use Weyermann malts in my brews, but visiting this place was top on my to-do list for Bamberg. The tour did not disappoint. They ended up doing the tour in English because that was a majority language of the group; sometimes they do it in German, and by special arrangement they can do other languages too. You see *everything* in the maltery, get to sample grains roasted in various ways, and have a beer tasting afterwards. Well worth an afternoon. Be aware that they only take cash for the tour, but the shop is very happy to accept credit cards...

My friend took me to Andechs by walking through the lovely trail with the view of Ammersee along the way. Absolutely love the Schweinhaxel and the dark beer for lunch. A must visit place in Bavaria.

You can walk from Freising Bahnhof using Google Maps on your phone. I couldn't find the right bus from the station using broken German, maybe get a taxi, but it's only a 20-minute walk. The tour itself is pretty standard, they show you a few small areas where they brew the beer, but it is quite loud and hard to hear the guide even though they speak in English. They do give you a bit of history of the brewery, but you could find that online as well. You can book the tour online but they only accept cash, yet you can use credit card in the restaurant so I don't know why that is. There's a small tasting with 2 beers at the end, are there a lot of souvenirs you can buy also. Overall the tour is okay but not the best I've had. I came here for the beer and the restaurant, both of which were excellent. They only had 2 beers on tap but had plenty of different varieties in bottles, so I tried 5 different types I can't buy back at home, and they were all fantastic. The goulash was pretty amazing. The outdoor beer garden is very relaxing. That's basically why I gave it 5/5, the tour alone is probably a 3 or 4.
