Kurashiki Yuga Onsen Hotel Santoka

Great Onsen and Service

Reviewed By Pengapa

This is more like a hotel with hot spring rather than a ryokan. We stayed here on a weekday during an off season period so the place was pretty much deserted and we almost had the hotel to ourselves. The baths, both indoor and outdoor, were great and it was fantastic to take a bath on my own in a big bathtub. The food was very good. They serve Japanese breakfast but you can also have bread and coffee. What is great about this place is they provide a lift to stations, Kojima and Kurashiki. We had quite a bit of time at the Kojima station and so we decided to catch a train to the other side of Seto Ohashi and come back, using our Kansai Wide Pass. You get a great view from the train. Next day, we got a lift to the Kurashiki station. This made it possible for us to visit 'Bikan' area in Kurashiki before moving onto Himeji to look at the castle. Overall, we enjoyed staying here although I cannot tell what it is like when it is busy.

Relaxing rotenburo

Reviewed By Simon L

Chikutei is in an old town, Mimasaka, buoyant and popular in the 1960s. Streets are quiet with many run-down shops but for a peaceful and relaxing stay in a Japanese ryokan with inside onsen (shitsunai onsen, male bathing facing the township below, female bathing not having a view) and outdoor onsen, Chikutei is a great choice. Fantastic outdoor onsen (rotenburo). Near entrance to female rotenburo is waiting room with tatami floor, gas stove and open-coal pit (irori). Dinner and breakfast can be included. Great shabu shabu and sashimi.

Comfortable stay and Excellent Staff

Reviewed By ysping

As usual, Japanese are very friendly and helpful. Even though they know you do not understand Japanese, they would still keep on explaining to you in Japanese or in their very limited English. This hotel do have a Chinese staff. This help a lot. The Spa is comfortable and my wife and I enjoy soaking in our in-room outdoor bath tub. It is cold outside and the Spa water is warm. It feels wonderful. We take breakfast and dinner option in our stay. Breakfast is fine and we like it many much. However, the dinner is just kind of ok. The atmosphere and setting are very good. Considering the price paid and the food. I would consider it is only satisfactory.

Reviewed By ruirunrun

Lovely traditional small Ryokan experience - staff, meals, setting

Reviewed By gmbklm

+ Lovely traditional Ryokan + Very attractive wooden buildings and Japanese garden + Very charming, friendly and attentive owner & staff + We effectively had own little house with own toilet & dining room. Lots of space + Very nice separate wooden onsen bathhouse used on a family basis (by both of us at the same time) which we much prefer. Only 5-6 rooms, so never busy. + Extremely good multi-course Kaiseki dinner each evening and lovely Japanese breakfasts not to be missed. Some of the best meals of the holiday. + So very nice after having an onsen, to sit in your Yukata, watching life in the garden, having a lovely breakfast. Every day, they very kindly wrote out an English translation of everything they could on the menu. + Strongly recommended for a relaxing couple of days to enjoy a very good traditional small Ryokan experience, a little bit away from the main tourist path. - Initially seemed a bit awkward to get to, but in practice was very simple, and more than compensated for by the overall very enjoyable experience - 10mins / Yen c1300 taxi from Shin-Kurashiki station. Big taxi rank, & all knew Bingoya. Ryokan called us taxis in the morning, or took us. Shin-Kurashiki has 5-6 Local trains / hour to Kurashiki (10mins), and is on the Shinkansen for longer trips - not enough clothes storage cupboards / hangers, but thats normal everywhere. we were travelling for 4 wks, so had a lot. - A personal thing, I’m not super keen on aircon based heating

Reasonably Good Value

Reviewed By Alberthanoi

The pleasant hotel is on the beach and has nice views of Seto Inland Sea and the Seto Ohashi Bridge. The staff are nice though it is a little tired because of low occupancy and thus low revenue in the off season. The view blockers need to be removed from the women’s baths — you can’t see the great view (I am told). No stores nearby — you need to drive to the fishing village (which has no stores) or stores in Kojima. The gift shop should sell snacks, at minimum. It is also a bit of a drive to ferries to Naoshima, Shodoshima or Teshima, though the scenery both along the water and in the mountains is quite nice. Driving over to the old buildings in Kurashiku and the adjacent Ohara Museum, as well as the Nozaki House in Kojima, are highly recommended.
